Aloha, our names are Noa Taylor, Krystal Puahala and Maya Lima. We are from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Campus and the purpose for our project is to help schools that are receiving a “lower education” than what is expected. The issue we will be addressing is Quality Education in Hawaiʻi and around the globe. We also hope that this project provides more awareness about quality education throughout Hawaiʻi and maybe the world. We are very fortunate to be going to a school that is considered having a “high education” and we would like to use this to our advantage.
UN Goal:
“Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to creating sustainable development.” Over 265 million children are currently out of school and 22% of them are of primary school age. Additionally, even the children who are attending schools are lacking basic skills in reading and math. The reasons for lack of quality education are due to lack of trained teachers, poor conditions of schools and equity issues related to opportunities provided to rural children. For quality education to be provided to the children of impoverished families, investment is needed in educational scholarships, teacher training workshops, school building and improvement of water and electricity access to schools.
Our plan:
Is to join together with HAEYC to make a difference in our community. We would like to participate in activities to give children a better quality education and also hopefully provide them with a few materials necessary for learning.
Local Statistics
In Hawaii the percentage of students who pass has fallen over the last several years, as well as the number of students that graduate and apply for college. Many of Hawaii's students do not do well in school mainly because they did not have a strong foundation in basic learning skills that are taught in elementary school. A survey done shows that approximately 58% of hawaiiʻs public school students have special needs of some sort. This leads to children not learning to the best of their ability. Hawaii needs to have better elementary schools to help children like this, and find a better way to teach them so that they can be prepared for the future and have better chances at passing classes and graduating.
Global Statistics
The statistics that were shown globally is extremely different from our local results. Many other countries have a higher graduation percentage than the U.S. Countries like Norway and Germany have 100% or almost 100% of their kids graduate from high school. The U.S. has a 75% rate of graduation. Although there is a big difference between other countries
The united nations is a very important organization in our world today. The united nations, or UN, is responsible for keeping peace and security between many other countries. They prevent conflict and helping people who are in conflict make peace. They reinforce peace and security between arguing nations and the also try to support ones who are struggling. They als protect human rights, deliver humanitarian aid, promote sustainable development, and many other positive things. One of their main focuses is on quality education. We felt like this was a important subject to focus on, so our generation, and also generations after us, can be trained.
Our goal as a group is to help provide quality education for children here in Hawaiʻi. We have identified that education is crucial to the future of our children. Some goals that the UN has is By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and Goal-4 effective learning outcomes. By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre primary education so that they are ready for primary education
Another country in the world that has the lack of quality education is Pakistan. In pakistan many kids do not get the education that they need. There is a lack of good teachers there, just like here in hawaii. Also there is a lot of poverty which makes it hard for families to send their children to school and get an education, which is a common problem.
How communism, imperialism, and capitalism affects our goal
Economic issues and theories like capitalism and communism impact issues like poverty because people come into the country, and change many things about it, and also changes their lifestyle. The people native to the area, then become unaware of the things happening around them and are unable to comprehend what is happening. They may lose their house, and their land, and their money because they are not familiar with the new system of rules and how things work. They are unable to get jobs and etc. because of their lack of knowledge of these new practices coming into their homeland.
Capitalism is better than communism because it is good for both the government and the people. It provides people with wealth, motivates people to be successful, and the government doesn't interfere with it. And in a capitalist society individual rights come before the benefits of the state.
Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. Capitalism still exists today. Capitalism is what runs America. Capitalism causes poverty as it only benefits the rich and makes the rich richer. This then becomes social injustice as it is unfair to the poor.
Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary.Like the other classical economists, Karl Marx believed in the labor theory of value to explain relative differences in market prices. This theory stated that the value of a produced economic good can be measured objectively by the average number of labor-hours required to produce it.
The affects of the cold war, communism, and capitalism has set up the issue of quality education by having less money and focus on building schools. It got everyone so concerned about “war” and violence and none about education.
