INTRODUCTION
Aloha Mai Kākou! Our names are Brooke, Chloie, and Dezaree. We are from Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. We are students of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama campus. The Kahiau Project is to help our community with different issues in our world.
U.N GOAL
Our UN goal is number 1: No Poverty. While global poverty rates have been cut by more than half since 2000, one in ten people in developing regions are still living with their families on less than the international poverty line of US$1.90 a day, and there are millions more who make little more than this daily amount. Significant progress has been made in many countries within Eastern and Southeastern Asia, but up to 42% of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa continues to live below the poverty line. The issue that we are passionate about is Poverty. In South Africa, more than half of itʻs population is below the poverty line. To this day, it is considered to be one of the poorest countries in Africa. In England, almost 20 million people were below the poverty line between the years 2010-2013. In Hawaiʻi, 132,549 out of 1.38 million people were in poverty in 2017. In 2018, approximately 8% of the world population lived in extreme poverty. Research shows that this statistic will decrease by 3% by 2030.
UNITED NATIONS
www.un.org/en/index.html
United Nations is made up of 193 Member States. Their work is based upon the principles contained in the founding Charter. The name “United Nations” roots from president Franklin D. Roosevelt, after it was used in the Declaration by United Nations during the time of World War II, when 26 nations pledged to fight together against the Axis Powers. The U.N officially came into existence on October 24, 1945 following the ratification of the U.N charter by China, France, the Soviet Union, the U.K, the U.S, etc. To this day, United Nations Day (Oct. 24) is celebrated.
One of the United Nations main goal is to eliminate poverty by the year 2030. The UN has stated that they would like to reduce the number of people in poverty by half. We have chosen this goal as our main goal for the Kahiau project because of how poorly it has affected Hawaiʻi. We have chosen to volunteer at the Hawaiʻi Food Bank because we want to help the hunger in Hawaiʻi. We have also chosen the clean water and sanitation goal as a sub-goal. This is our sub-goal because if people don’t need to worry about feeding themselves and their families then, they can focus on other things like getting clean water and being sanitary.
Our UN goal is No Poverty, this connects to our project topic which is poverty because they both deal with people being in situations where they canʻt support themselves and they need help. The UN goal establishes what poverty is and that there are still 736 million people in poverty today. For our project, we will be distributing food to those who cannot afford food for themselves or they have no access to food and water. There are people all around the world who cannot support themselves and we must help them because we have the power and time. Itʻs not only making Hawaiʻi a better place by helping these people to get food, but it makes you, as a person, feel better because you're giving back and you're helping those in need. Again this connects because both are dealing with those who cannot support themselves and for our project we will be helping them so that when looking in the future, the number of people in poverty around the world will drop.
A particular place that was affected fairly through the philanthropic means by U.N and other organizations/governments is Northern Africa. They showed faster progress than expected. Northern Africa reached the goal of halving their extreme poverty five years ahead of the deadline (2010). Modern day, only 1% of people live on $1.25 a day. This has fallen from 5% in 1990.

NON-PROFIT

Poverty is very much a local Hawaiʻi problem. According to the 2015 Census Bureau's "supplemental poverty measure”, one in six people in Hawaiʻi are living in poverty. Which means, about 237,667 were in poverty around that time. This past year, in Hawaiʻi, 11% of people living in the state were considered below the poverty level. Hawaii News Now reported, “According to HUD, as of 2018, low income for a single person in Honolulu is someone making up to $65,350. Just a year ago, it was $58,600. That's a nearly $7,000 increase from 2017.” The reason it keeps rising is that the cost of living is rising in Hawaiʻi.
The Hawaiʻi FoodBank provides a place to collect and donate food to those who are unable to get food on their own. The Hawaiʻi Foodbank also ships food to other islands. There are 200 charitable agencies on Oahu. Not only does it help with the needy but when there are natural disasters and people lose their homes they provide way to help rebuild. The Hawaiʻi Foodbank was rated #1 and 94% of the donations help to feed the homeless. It provides service to those who need help and cannot get food. By donating you help give support to those in the community who need it. The target audience is everyone and it is to help the community and to lift eachother up, this is needed because we are supposed to stick together and help one another no matter the situation.
This non-profit connects to the topic of poverty because, 767 million people (1 in 10 people in the world) live under $1.90 a day. As prices get higher and population grows in the world, this statistic is not that hard to believe. We think that this can help poverty because it will assist families’ high bills on buying enough food. Since food is a necessity in life, it can be one less thing for them to worry about getting. Meanwhile, they can use their own money on other essentials like rent, shelter, clothing, etc.

IMPERIALISM AND GLOBALIZATION
The literal definition of colonization is “the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.” This means that there are non-natives of a specific land that settle and take control of the indigenous people. The definition of imperialization is, “a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.” An example of imperialization would be Hawaiʻi being taken over by America. Globalization means, “the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.”
It is no surprise that Africa holds many, if not the most, third world countries. One of these countries is Nigeria. With the help of the British empire, Nigeria was colonized and became a united country until 1960. There are many effects from this act of British colonization. The worst effect was slavery. People would get kidnapped and sold, making the economy break. From this, globalization took place because people would start working all around the world. Other things would be their resources would be stolen and they became more industrialized. Aside from the negative impacts, there are also very good positive impacts. Since Nigeria had many tribes, it wasnʻt always easy to see eye to eye with each other. But when the British came over, they were taught a new kind of government system and how to write peace treaties. This resulted in a decrease of tribal conflicts. All in all, although there was great wrongs done, there were also positive impacts that still help Nigeria to this day.
In 1778, Captain Cook came to Hawaiʻi and this is an example of colonization because he came here and when people seen him they thought that he was a chief, he did not clear it up with the people of Hawaiʻi therefore he used his “power” to control people and an island when he had no right to do so. 1821, Protestant missionaries arrived the following year and converted many Hawaiians to Christianity. This is another example of colonization because they came to Hwaiʻi and “took over” by spreading what they believe in trying to get the people of Hawaiʻi to convert and believe in what they believe in. In 1853, the plantation start up and there were workers from all around coming to work in the fields, such as China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, and Portugal. This could be seen as colonization because they came to Hawaii and were all over the fields. This could also be seen as imperialism as well because they came through the request of the government and from the people with a higher power. Finally in 1893, The overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom began. Our queen was placed under house arrest, this is an example of imperialism because of a group of American businessmen came to Hawaii and forced the queen to abdicate. This was so they, the Americans, could have all the power and do as they please on Hawai’i land. This could all connect to poverty because the Hawaiian people have been through so much throughout the years leading them to have nothing leaving them poor. Throughout history it has always been non natives that take everything from us and try to change everything, same with now. Today there are lots of tourists meaning that they build new sites all over the land so that they have attractions to look at. This leaves us natives with nothing because we can no longer support ourselves with the rise in cost and now there is no longer that much land left.

GLOBAL ECONOMIC/INDUSTRIAL IMPACTS
Capitalism and Communism impacts global issues like poverty because of the ways that the money is processed. Some people get more money than others, causing different statuses throughout the community. The way that the government decided to distribute the money to the people, distinguishes the difference between the rich and poor, which leads us to the big issue, poverty. The goals that were set were placed to help minimize or even get rid of this issue. Seeing as this is a problem businesses could help to contribute to get more money after helping or to even make their brand look good.
