Homelessness has gotten so bad in Hawaiʻi that the Governor declared a state of emergency. People come to Hawaiʻi with jobs but the cost to live here is too high. Thereʻs a family of six that lives in a van, and the kids have no space to study and do their homework, and they must use a street lamp for light. Itʻs sad to see homeless people on the streets, and itʻs even worse when itʻs children because they canʻt do anything about it. Most island voters believe that homelessness has not improved and that it is getting much worse.
Our non profit organization, The River of Life Mission, contributes to many different people in Hawaiʻi, not only homeless people. Their mission isnʻt to help just homeless people in Hawaiʻi, but it is to help restore broken lives through RESCUE, REHABILITATION, and REINTEGRATION. They donʻt focus fully on the homeless but they want to help elderly, and addicted. So they want to help people that are trying to stay stable, or fix their lives that are broken. They also have classes for referrals and life-skill training to help anyone through their mind, body, and spirit.
This non-profit organization connects to our groups project because they help anyone who is in need like the homeless, mentally ill, elderly, addicts, forgotten veterans, disabled, and families in general. And what we are trying to do is help the homeless with resources that they don’t have that we can provide for them.

For the Kahiau project, my group will be helping feed the homeless. We had made the decision to feed the homeless because Hawaiʻi has a big homeless population. Hawaiʻi has a population of about 1.4 million people. The homeless population in Hawaiʻi is about 7,220. That is after a 9% decrease in the homeless population. This statistic comes from 2017. The most recent statistic is from May in 2018, which has the homeless population at 6,530. The amount of homeless compared to the general population is surely significantly smaller, but it is number 1 in the entire U.S. in homeless percentage.
The reason this is a huge global concern. In 2017, there were 553,742 people that were homeless. This is the homeless population for one of the 195 countries. Looking at that number, you can see that this is a big national problem. For this to be global, we need to know what the homeless population is in the entire world. The estimated amount of homeless in the world is a high number at about 150,000,000 people. That is a huge amount of people that are living on the streets.
Everywhere there are governments that say that they are going to do things to help the homeless or people who are in need but the things they are doing aren’t actually helping them. They make these homeless shelters that don’t help all of the homeless people but only help a few. Or they just kick the homeless people out from where they were staying even though they don’t have anywhere to go. And they are doing this to help make Hawaii look like what people think it would look like which is “Paradise”. So they are trying to kick out all of the people who are on the streets and sent them off to somewhere else. But they don’t have anywhere to go because they don’t have the money to afford a house.

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945, after World War 2. It started with 51 countries to try and maintain peace. They have four main purposes, to keep peace throughout the world, to develop friendly relations among nations, to help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms, and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals. In 1945, there were 51 countries that were members of the United Nations. Now there are 193, and there are only 195 countries in the world.
Our goal is to help improve the lives of homeless people, and to help them out, since they are struggling. We hope to eventually make a big difference, and help the homeless population decrease in Hawaiʻi. Two goals that are similar to ours from the United Nations is, to improve the lives of poor people, and conquer world hunger. These two goals are very similar to ours because homeless people are poor and hungry, and we are trying to help them.
This goal relates to our topic because our topic focuses on homeless people. For us homelessness is something that we do not want to see on the street of Hawaiʻi, or anywhere in the world. We chose this goal because we feel that it could have the biggest impact. The UN also sees this as a big problem since it is part of their four main purposes. That shows how significant homelessness is, not only in Hawaiʻi, but in the whole world.
One country that has a huge homeless population is the Philippines. They currently have 4.5 million people that are homeless out of a population of 106 million. And about 3 million of the homeless are in Manila which is the capital of the philippines. Urban Poor Resource Center of the Philippines is a non-profit organization that is trying to help the homeless people of the Philippines. There are nearly 115,000 empty houses in the Philippines that are owned by the government, and John Paul Lapid of the Urban Poor Resource Center of the Philippines is saying that the only way to get these people out of the streets is to put them in these empty houses that are owned by the government.

Colonization is the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area. Imperialization is a type of government that uses military force or diplomacy to extend a country's power. Some governments use colonization and imperialism as a way to expand their country and government. Governments want power so they forcefully take over some smaller countries and nations like the U.S. took over Hawai’i. The U.S. used imperialism to take over Hawai’i.
One country that is involved with globalization is Japan. Japan has been involved with globalization since 1973 when they made a transition to a floating exchange rate system. They became trade partners with the US and began trading ever since and this is what started Japan to trade with other overseas countries. And over the years globalization in Japan has been advancing and is still advancing to this day.
Hawai’i has faced an imperialism type of government during the overthrow. The U.S. held guns pointed at the Queen of Hawai’i and forced her to stay locked in her room for 8 months. Another example of the U.S. using imperialization is when the bayonet constitution was created. This constitution striped the Hawaiian monarchy of it’s power, and the U.S. used military force for this to be done. This happened in 1887. An example of Hawai’i going through colonization is when the white men started coming to Hawai’i. Coming to Hawai’i, they brought many good things and bad things with them, including disease. Another way of imperialization that was used against Hawai’i was with Hawai’i being annexed. Hawai’i was pretty much forced to be annexed because we couldn’t fight against the U.S. They were too powerful and too big of a nation for Hawai’i.
These example has played a role into our issue in Hawaii because when the white men came to Hawaii they took over and made the Hawaiians like slaves and treated them badly. And this made them always have a hard life and live up to what happened in the past which leaves them into having bad paying jobs, no jobs, and even no homes which leave them homeless. And there are many people in this situation that can’t get out which is why we are going to try and help them out for a day.

The Struggle For Hawaiian Sovereignty - Introduction. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.culturalsurvival.org/publications/cultural-survival-quarterly/struggle-hawaiian-sovereignty-introduction
Modern Warfare has played a huge toll on our kahiau project. Mainly because we are focussing on homelessness here in Hawai’i. Since Hawai’i is the only place in the world where you get all elements, rain, snow, heat, cold, jungle, desert, the military wants soldiers here in Hawai’i. Soldiers must train to be ready for any climate, and Hawai’i is the one of the only places in the world with all. Since the military has to train here, they need a lot of land, and that means less land for citizens. Now since the military takes up 50% of the Hawaiian land, that means that there is only 50% of Hawai’i land that citizens can use. That means people need homes, so since there are limited amount of homes, people need to buy quick, and knowing that people need homes, and there are only a small amount of options, the government rises the prices. Since foreigners, mainly whites, are more suitable to spend big bucks on homes, that means that there are less opportunities for local people. This increases the homeless population.
The U.S. has had a history of military presence in Hawai’i. The first time was when the overthrow was occurring. They used military force to take over Hawai’i. Since then they have been using Hawai’i mainly as a base and training facility. Eventually, Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1945. Being that the military was stationed in Hawai’i, the saw this as an opportunity to take advantage. Since then, the military continues to use Hawai’i as a base, and training facility, and Hawai’i still has a big target on it’s back, and if we were to get attacked again, the impact would be drastic. It would be big because of new weaponry that has been created.
One of the main reasons on why military is set up in Hawai’i is because it is located in the middle of the Pacific. This means that the U.S. can be closer to Japan. They needed to be closer to Japan because of the start of World War II in 1931. Since the U.S. was stationed in Hawai’i, Japan took advantage of this and they bombed Pearl Harbor. Even though the military is here to protect us, this puts a huge target on our back. If we were to get an atomic, or hydrogen bomb dropped on Hawai’i, no one would live, since Hawai’i is so small, and those bombs have huge impacts. Other events that led up to Hawai’i having military is other wars, like the Vietnam war, and the Korean war. These wars caused the U.S. to station in Hawai’i because we are closer than America, and the different climates for training.

Communism tries to distribute money equally too itʻs people, but this means in countries like Russia, more people are in poverty. This is because they donʻt have enough money to distribute to people so that they can have good lives, or live in good homes. This ends up meaning that people are very malnourished. Capitalism is the opposite. People at more important roles, get more money, so this means that people with not much money, and not as good jobs, will suffer more with poverty.
Capitalism is better because it rewards people who are willing to work, and communism pays people the same. So in communism I would slack off, but still make as much as my friend who is the hardest worker. In capitalism, higher ranked people will get paid more, but they would have to work hard to get there, so itʻs better to reward the hard workers.
Capitalism still works in todayʻs society since we live in one today. Itʻs good to reward the hard workers in todayʻs society, and it does still work. Capitalism does cause poverty though, because some people may not be slackers, but they were still grown into a rough life, where they would drop out of school or have to work multiple jobs. This means that this person wouldnʻt get a good education, and not be able to go to college, and then go on to have a good job. Also, working multiple jobs means that this person wouldnʻt be able to focus on working hard on one job, because they have to focus on multiple.
He was a German think who introduced the concept of communism. Marxʻs theory asserts that an individual's position within a class hierarchy is determined by his or her role in the production process, and argues that political and ideological consciousness is determined by class position.
Since capitalism can easily cause poverty and homelessness, the wars pushing for capitalism pretty much help it grow. Capitalism is good, but the fact that is causes such a hard time for homeless people makes it not so good. The wars did damage to a lot of people, and when people started to focus on capitalism, it just made these peopleʻs lives much harder.

The positive effects that I have found about European powers colonizing Africa was that it helped them expand greatly with their natural resources because many other countries didnʻt have what they had. This is related to what happened to Hawai’i because when America came they didnʻt have many of the things that the Hawaiians had. And it put Hawai’i on the map which made people come here to get things only from Hawaiʻi which expanded their exporting. This relates to our UN Goal because while importing goods many people came with the goods which made them come to Hawai’i. This made them come to the islands looking for a job and some of them not getting a job. This lead them to becoming homeless and living out in the streets with nothing or barely anything to get them by.
In the late 19th century European powers colonized much of Africa and Asia. European powers view Africa and Asia as a supply or source for many resources. And the European power made good use of their resources in a beneficial way but they did it brutally. Also many of the people there were recruited to join the European militaries. This compares to Hawaii because it happened the way way to them with the US coming here and colonizing the Hawaiian islands. They came here and forced their ways into the native people or they will be brutally beaten. They also viewed Hawaiʻi as a benefit to their military, making it another hometurf for them thatʻs closer to Japan. This can relate to our UN Goal because our UN goal talks about homelessness and poverty. And one of the reasons that people are homeless is because they are ex-military and they have no job after they get released from the US military which leaves them homeless.
