Our UN Issues
While looking over all UN Issues, we have the most interest in Goal 14: Life Below Water. All the members of our group are very passionate in addressing the possible threats to our local shorelines and ecosystem problems. Becoming more educated on the topic, we have found a new affinity to wanting to save our beaches, especially with the type of place we live in. All members are very much aware of how pollution is a huge issue in our society. Thus, we have concluded with participating in a beach cleanup, to put our hopes into action. According to the article, High Bacteria Count at Waikiki Beach: Swimming may Make you Ill from the website SF Gate, routine beach monitoring at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki revealed levels of 945 per 100 milliliters of enterococci, beyond the threshold of 130. Also, located in Ala Moana, levels of 164 per 100 milliliters of enterococci, which is very shocking to the public.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been trying to keep critical parts of the ocean clear of marine debris, removing 57 tons of it from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in 2014. Despite the government agency's efforts, Hawaii continues to be plagued by trash, much of it plastic. Microplastic has become such a problem for U.S. waterways, with more than 8 trillion microbeads flooding into our streams, rivers, and lakes — that's enough to cover 300 tennis courts daily. In just a few months, the Hawaii Wildlife Fund (HWF) collected and hauled away 15,000 pounds of trash, nylon nets and fishing line from Kamilo Beach.
According to a credible website (“Pollution - Facts and Figures”), 80% of marine pollution comes from land-based sources, therefore indicating that because we are so dependent on our oceans, we must take heed to the increase of pollution that threatens to curtail our resources. From these statistics, especially those mentioned above pertaining to Hawaiʻi, it only justifies why we choose our actions that will be taken. Because of this, our motivation and awareness of our problem that connects to one of the UN Issues will help us to understand what the outcome will be. In conclusion, we intend to hopefully create somewhat of a meaningful impact on our society.

Our Non-Profit: Sustainable Coastlines
The United Nations is an organization known world-wide containing 193 member states. Their purpose is found within their Charter, which states that they strive to maintain international peace and security. Also, they aspire to develop relationships on a friend level among nations based upon the principles of equal rights and self-determination, as well as to take other appropriate measures leading towards the solidification of universal peace. Thirdly, they try to achieve cooperation on the international level to solve world-wide complications, whether it be of economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, hoping to encourage respect for various things, without discrimination against race, sex, language, etc. Lastly, they endeavor “to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.”
Because we have chosen to address the UN Goal 14: Life Below Water, it can be complemented by two other goals, Goal 6, and Goal 12. In connection to Life Below Water, the first goal to be compared is Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. In this section, it explains further on how many people lack access in obtaining water that isn’t contaminated. The scarcity of water is a problem that we should all be concerned with, especially since access is not permitted for so many world-wide. In comparison, this crosses over due to water quality. The lack of acquiring water is affected by oil spills, pollution, contamination, and other problems that can also impact the ocean, which is what our main goal concerns. But, this can also be linked to Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption, which stresses sustainability, including water, energy, and food. In joining this goal with Life Below Water, statistics prove that less than 3 percent of the World’s water is drinkable, but we only utilize 1/6 only that 3 percent, leaving us to depend on 0.5 percent of water. This problem is because of humans polluting streams and lakes, any body of water, faster than nature is able to purify it, which greatly influences those living in the water, directly joining our goal.
We chose UN Goal: Life Below Water because our oceans and water in general are important for the survival of humans. Our project topic is cleaning up some of the pollution found in hawaii. They are connected because the majority of the pollution in hawaii go to its surrounding ocean. By conserving the life below the waters of hawaii, we can secure a clean life above the surface.

In Asia, there are heaps of oceanic pollution. Over 50 percent of the worlds plastic pollution if from Asia. Asia is also the world's biggest place for plastic production. There is an effort to dwindle the amount of plastic production and use due to the over pollution. the action is needed in asia because the plastic is creating massive patches of waste that is floating in the ocean and killing our source of food. we need to recognize the problem and fix it.

Imperialization and Globalization
Globalization
The term colonization defines into the process of settling and taking control over an indigenous people of a region. This can go hand-in-hand with imperialization, which is influencing, usually through politics, or forcing through war other countries to yield to their rule because of a government wanting to increase its size. Combined, these are and can be associated with globalization, the process that leads to organizations obtaining influence of the international level. It applies to society today because of all the examples that have been prominent in history and our world today.
Imperialism is the political and economic control of other areas. Because it always involves the use of power, whether using military force, imperialism has often been looked down upon. The good effects are that the colonial power will construct business. That will included roads, railroads, power generation states, water and sewerage facilities. An example of this imperialism is in south africa. France invaded the country and had very little regard for the native people. This resulted in development and evolution of south africa’s cities etc.
These all surround the idea of massive change
Overthrow of Hawaiʻi January 17, 1893
The Roaring Twenties 1920
Lakuokoa November 28
Golden Age 500-300 BC
The events chosen were not at random, they were those that affect our community here in Hawaiʻi. Although some of the events used happened many years ago, we are still experiencing the consequences today. The dates given and provided occurrences matched up well with the topic of colonization/imperialization and globalization. These terms played a role with all of the events; complementing one another, these events included an organization wanting to take control over an indigenous people, which somewhat consistently led them to gaining international influence.

Communism
Communism can reduce the amount of poverty because everyone would have the same amount of money as anyone. Capitalism can cause poverty because of the way money works. The companies can pick and choose how much money they give out and keep since it is run by the people.
I think that communism is better only because it gives everyone a chance. Everyone is equal and the people who run the government would be thinking for equality for the people. There would be no second thoughts about money issues because everyone would have the same amount of income. Also, people wouldn't have to worry about the people in charge because they would already be chosen.
Because the definition of capitalism goes along the lines of a country’s trade/industry being controlled by private owners that run a political system for profit, we can see that capitalism is still ongoing today throughout the many examples in our world today. Capitalism is always being the center of attention, being accused for complications that are present in our world today, such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and many more. Based on all examples that are prominent in society, we can see that capitalism is responsible for creating fear and worry of the possibility of social injustice increasing. Although, because it brings the fear of people becoming unemployed, which can lead to poverty, it also brings social injustice in play. With inequality stemming into more situations, capitalism can be suitably responsible for its occurrence
Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary. Born in Trier, Germany, Marx studied law and philosophy at university. Marxian class theory asserts that an individual’s position within a class hierarchy is determined by his or her role in the production process, and argues that political and ideological consciousness is determined by class position. He thinks that your power in society should come from how hard you work rather than being distributed to all people evenly.
The wars contributed to my global issue by giving companies freedom to manage themselves. Having this freedom caused businesses to turn to cheap, not environmentally friendly methods of production. Using items like cheap plastic bags save the companies money while littering the environment.

ALTERNATIVE FUTURES: HEARING VOICES OF RESISTANCE BECOMING VOICES OF CHANGE FOR OUR LAHUI
A positive example of decolonization can be found in India. After the war, the british withdrew from many of their territories. Some positives of this decolonization include modern technology and ideas of government. Before Europeans decolonized some countries in India, they did not have modern technology or a proper government. .
A negative example of decolonization can be found in Africa. When the french took over some parts in africa,, they wanted the africans to change their culture. To achieve this, the French used the policy of assimilation; education and the fulfillment of some formal conditions, some "natives" would become evolved and civilized French Africans. However, when some of the european forces withdrew, the native population was left with the european culture instead of their own native traditions.
This is similar and different to Hawaii in many different ways. When Hawaii was colonized, the culture was almost lost and the native population lived in poverty. However, through education opportunities like the Kamehameha Schools, the native population is no longer living in extreme poverty
Similar: Rome fell most likely fell to nomadic tribes. USA might fall to enemy countries.
Similar: Gorbachev (soviet statesmen) said to have accelerated the decline of the USSR. The president predicted to accelerate the downfall.
Similar: CIvil unrest between races occupying the same territory. War breaks out between the countries’ own citizens
Similar: military contradiction in rome caused it to be weakened. US expected to be conflicted with organizations
Similar: Some decisions made caused great unemployment in the USSR. The US is said to have more unemployment due to immigration.
Different: The US is not stamping out all native cultures. Unlike in India, Americans are somewhat free to practice any culture.
Similar: A bad leader caused Rome’s economy to plummet. The president is accelerating the rate of decline for the US.
Similar: Social Contradictions in the USSR (nationalist movements) are said to have caused the collapse. A split in religion etc is said to split the US apart.
Different: Civil unrest do to military treating native population unfairly. The US will most likely not fall to its own military.
Different: A lack of resources caused an unstable shift in Rome’s economy. Lack of resources is not a main prediction for the fall of the US
Different: A decision to make so many Guns, weapons, etc caused less accessibility to consumer goods.
Similar: Unemployment and drought were common during the colonization of India. Global warming may affect the US accessibility to resources.
