Collapse of an Empire
Part 1: Find (1) positive/desirable A positive desirable outcome is that the US does not collapse. In our constitution we have many things that countries do not have. We have the right to bear arms and the freedom of speech. Also the US is a provider to many, there countries we have many programs and we spend many money helping other countries and if we collapsed many countries would suffer greatly from it.
Part 2: (1) negative/undesirable example of a time in History European Power decolonizing a colony (focus on the colony decolonization experience) - compare and contrast both to Hawaiiʻs situation as it relates to your Kahiau topic.
An undesirable outcome would be the decolonization of Hawaii. Being apart of a world superpower is very important especially as a small island. We are able to get support and supplies from america and being decolonized would make that harder.
Part 3: Written response to:
Compare & Contrast 4 points for each of the following (minimum 3) : historical fall of Rome, Great Britain (Gandhi), USSR (Iron Curtain during Cold War), or in Australia or Africa and compare with the pending fall of America that is being predicted soon.
The fall of Rome would be the closest to the fall of america. The fall of rome was caused by a overabundance of reliance on slave labor and spreading their armies too thin. In america we have always been at war all over the world. We have the biggest military and are constantly engaged in many different conflicts. Also Rome had political corruption that lead to destabilization and the collaple. In America we also have a lot of political corruption due to bribes that change laws and help the rich while it could impact the poor causing poverty.

Global Economic / Industrial Impacts
Venezuela is a socialist country which is closely related to communism and that caused the economic collapse leading to famine. Many families were not able to take care of their pets so they had to resort to eating and cooking them. This relates to our problem because we are looking for the protection of animals.
The United Nations Goal
The UN has set up development goals for the betterment, these are the ones who we follow
The United Nations was formed in 1945 after the end of WWII by 51 countries. They have made many goals towards regulating and mandating countries policies and maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights. Our UN goal was goal 15 which was life on land which focuses on the different problems we face and have created in the ecosystem of our planet and focus on helping out animals and help the the cruelty and homeless of animals and all the problems which come from that. Goals that relate to our problems are goal 11 which is sustainable cities which offer full services for all the inhabitants and you could relate that to having animals living in a good and the facilities to support animal sheltering so that animals can get loving homes for people that want them. A non-European country that has a huge problem with stray animals is India. Some of the main reasons for their problem with stray animals is their open garbage and their lack of government services that deal with stray animals, as compared to other countries.
Colonization/Imperialization = Globalization
Colonization: the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.
Imperialization: of, relating to, befitting, or suggestive of an empire or an emperor Globalization: the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale Globalization impacted different South American countries due to the need for wealth from other companies and exportation. Countries such as Honduras were changed heavily due to the need of the exportation of bananas. They are known as the Banana Republics and were heavily changed by three companies which sought to make money by the exportation of bananas. The companies gained control of the governments with help from America and because of that, the companies gained control of the governments which helped give them major tax benefits. This negatively impacted the people because the only jobs they could get were working on the banana plantations for the lowest of wages. As early as 1842 the Kingdom of Hawai’i fought to keep their independence as a nation. A delegation was sent to the U.S., UK and France, to attain written and verbal acknowledgement of the Kingdom of Hawai’i as an Independent Nation in hopes of gaining allies to assist in maintaining their sovereignty over Hawai’i. In 1842, the Secretary of State John Calhoun verbally confirmed the full recognition on the part of the United States of the independence of the Hawaiian Government on behalf of the U.S. President John Tyler. This was immediately followed by the Anglo-Franco Proclamation (1843) claim which “acknowledges the Sandwich Islands as an Independent State.” Those events sets up the problem which Hawaiʻi faces today. All the different ships coming in from all the other continents brought new species of animals that were very harmful to the delicate ecosystem that is hawaii. The first deadly animal brought were rats which were brought by Captain Cook. This led to the problem of different stray animals being brought to Hawaii. Later cater were brought to Hawaiʻi and because of the rat problem and Hawaii's abundance of birds the cats were able to live as starts and terrorize the populations. Sugar plantations first introduced the species to Hawaii in 1883 to control rats in cane fields. The mongoose didn’t control rats as planned but instead preyed on turtle eggs and birds. Their numbers have also exploded because they don’t have any natural predators in Hawaii. |
Feral Population Problems
Feral populations of animals are a bad thing for humans and animals. Animals being neglected are often just shown as a sentimental thing but in reality, it is deeper than that. Feral cats kill 2.3 billion birds per year. In Hawaii, the amount of species that are endangered or have gone extinct is the highest than any place in the world. Having these feral populations show how having a third party interference inside of highly delicate ecosystems have such a massive impact on how species will interact with each other. Helping out with the humane society is the impact we are making to help out the delicate ecosystems and help out stranded animals with no homes.

Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
The SPCA was organized in 1883. In 1897. Education was a top priority. In a time when animal information was very basic, it fell to those founding members to raise public awareness about the proper care, feeding and humane treatment of animals. The SPCA mission is a joyful one full of challenges and opportunities. Since 2017, the shelter in Wahiawa has become a community hub for animal lovers featuring programs and services focused on strengthening the human-animal bond: rescuing the abused, engaging volunteers, fighting for better laws and caring for more than 20,000 animals a year. They also educate young and old and working to find solutions to the problems of the community. They are Oahu’s only open-admission shelter open every day of the year.
This company relates to our service project because they are Oahu's biggest pet shelters and the services they do are very important in changing the ever-growing problem of feral populations in Hawaii. The SPCA allows us to give back to the community by volunteering and helping the different animals at the shelters and be able to give to the feral animals and help them have love and care because they do not have a home. The OSPCA is the only organization in Hawaii to have a microchip database and the id over 2500 animals a year to strays and are hoping to increase that number. More than 100 animals are in the care of the OSPCA at a time. Due to multiple events over 250 the Humane Society sets up they have created over 7,500 new homes for feral animals a year and that number is increasing. The numbers look good until you realize that there are 350,000+ stray cats on Oahu alone. |
Warfare History, and Present and Future
What are the effects of Modern Warfare on your Kahiau issue? Modern warfare creates more stray animals and lessens homes that animals can have. Also in warfare caring for a pet is not the biggest issue that people would look at and personal survival will take precedence.
What is the history of military influence in Hawaii? During WW2 the U.S set up base here and it was bombed by Japan. This was because Pearl Harbor was an excellent and well know strategical base which was set up in 1898 What are 2-3 specific events (please include dates & impacts) that occurred that set up military presence in Hawaii? Missionaries took over our government and converted it to a provisional government, us warship was stationed at Pearl Harbor and troops were set up outside the palace before the overthrow In 1873, Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield surveyed Pearl Harbor to evaluate its military potential, and for more than a century, Hawaii has played a major role as a headquarters for the U.S. Army in the Pacific. Fort Shafter was built from 1905 to 1907 and in 1921 became the headquarters for the Hawaiian Department. In 1979, the Army established U.S. Army Western Command (WESTCOM) as a major command and the Army component of U.S. Pacific Command. WESTCOM took command of Army forces in Hawaii. In 1989, it added U.S. Army Alaska and in 1990 U.S. Army Japan. Also in 1990, WESTCOM was renamed USARPAC How does the media portray the military? The media portrays warfare as a bad thing and will always portray war as a bad thing that should not have happened. Most media sources will show only one side of the war or show only the side which fits the political agenda How has the presence of military & military needs off to affected social infrastructure that surrounds your issue? The presence of military needs usually will advance the social infrastructure around the military base because of the needs of the soldier's needs and the families the bases expand and the people will always request better things which would be made. Sometimes infrastructure fails when the military will not be using the land as a permanent base. |
