The Issue
Plastic trash in our oceans has been a major problem in our local and global worldwide. It is now believed that there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea. Shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year. This translates to about a million bags every minute across the globe, or 150 bags a year for every person on earth. And the number is rising.
Written by Carla Herreria, HONOLULU ― Remote, undeveloped coastlines on the Hawaiian islands are renowned for their natural beauty. But Kamilo Point, a far-flung beach in the rural Ka’u district of the Big Island, is not. On the island’s southeastern side, Kamilo Point looks like a wasteland, despite its tide pools and pockets of lava rock. The ocean’s currents and powerful trade winds deposit thousands of pounds of man-made trash on this beach each year. One look, and it’s no wonder how this became known as one of the dirtiest beaches in the world. Some call it Plastic Beach.
Some research on our topic is that it impacts Hawai’i and itʻs sea life greatly. According to the magazine National Geographic it says about 5.3 trillion pieces of debri float in the oceans of Hawai’i. In Hawaii it is important to maintain a rate to where there is no litter or debri in our oceans, because we have more marine life that could end up extinct.1

History
808 Cleanups is a environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaii’s natural beauty by entrusting volunteers to conduct cleanups all over the place from mauka to makai, responding to littering and vandalism of Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces, saving Hawaiʻi’s ecosystem through education, and building sustainable solutions with community partners.
-Polluted runoff, or nonpoint source pollution, results when stormwater or irrigation water washes pollutants from the land into streams and coastal waters causing human waste to enter the westside of oahu beaches.
-Health officials said levels of 945 per 100 milliliters of enterococci, beyond the threshold of 130, were detected during routine beach monitoring at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki. Levels of 164 per 100 milliliters of enterococci were detected during routine beach monitoring at Ala Moana Beach Park.
-Swimming at beaches with pollution in the water may make one ill. Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are the most likely populations to develop illnesses or infections after coming into contact with polluted water, usually while swimming.

-Local beach cleanups
-Anybody can come out and help for the designated dates.
-We need this service because it helps cleanup the beaches of plastics and debri that people leave on the beach.
808 Cleanups connects to our groupʻs project topic because the organization sets up local beach cleanups throughout Oahu.

Our goal is to lower the amount of pollution that's on our beaches and make our reefs safer and more healthy for our local wildlife. Similar goals that the UN seek are “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.”, “By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans”
“Oceans - United Nations Sustainable Development.” United Nations, United Nations, www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/oceans/.
The goal we chose was to conserve and sustainably use the worldʻs oceans. Our group topic connects to our goal by helping prevent trash on the beaches which create pollution. Our project is based on beach cleanups. Beach cleanups prevent pollution and help clean and get rid of the trash that is in the ocean. Our topic also helps by helping to keep marine life/resources to be safe from trash.
In 2015, countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In 2016, the Paris Agreement on climate change entered into force, addressing the need to limit the rise of global temperatures. Read more about what businesses, governments, and people like you are doing to achieve the Goals! The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a global blueprint for dignity, peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and in the future. A few years into the Agenda, we see how civil society, private sector, and governments are translating this shared vision into national development plans and strategies.

Another country in the world that is affected by the same problem that we are facing is China and Indonesia. Researchers found that China and Indonesia are the top sources of plastic bottles, bags, and other rubbish clogging up global sea lanes. China and Indonesia both account for a third of the plastic debri that are in global waters. About 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste came from China with and estimated 3.53 million metric tons of it ending up in the ocean. Indonesia also estimated a total about 1.29 million metric tons of plastic debri.

WEEK 4
To what we have been discussing in class Colonization means to produce some sort of control over another group or area, and Imperialization is to have make an area to have a superior for that state to be imperialized. These two add up to Globalization because internationally other organizations can start to influence both Colonization/Imperialization on other foreign countries.
An oil spill from an Iranian oil tanker that sank in the East China Sea is now the size of Paris. The slick covers an area of 101 square kilometers (39 square miles), after almost doubling in size from the start of the week, according to figures released Wednesday by the Chinese State Oceanic Administration.Chinese authorities said there were four separate slicks that had formed after the Panama-registered Sanchi tanker sank Sunday. The largest oil slick is 48 square kilometers (19 square miles), it added.

- The overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii began on January 17, 1893, with a coup d'état against Queen Liliʻuokalani on the island of Oahu by foreign residents residing in Honolulu, mostly United States citizens, and subjects of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
- In September 2013, 1,400 tons of molasses spilled into Honolulu Harbor. The spill was discovered on 9 September 2013. It was caused by a faulty pipe, for which the shipping company Matson Navigation Co. took responsibility.
- 1989 at Barbers Point. The Exxon Houston was unloading 500,000 barrels of crude oil, when a hose broke. 800 of the barrels leaked into the ocean, and onto the shoreline.
Warfare
What are the effects of Modern Warfare on your Kahiau issue?
Modern Warfare has affected the ocean in an unimaginable way. Over the years from 1945 through 1998 even till today, bombing and nuclear warfare has impacted the oceanʻs purity. Bomb testing and nuclear weapons have changed the oceans purpose. The ocean helps us in more ways than we think. Water gives us life. In Hawaiian thinking having water makes you rich. The water that is being circulated throughout the world has changed and is now making us potential victims rather than wealthy people. The water is filled with pollution. Starting from nuclear radiation, oil contamination, pure nuclear waste, and the list goes on. The leftover waste or the aftermath of Modern Warfare has changed our waters and they will never be the same again.
What is the history of military influence in Hawaii?
One piece of history that the military influenced was the bombing of Kahoʻolawe. Kahoʻolawe is a very sacred place to our hawaiian people, some people aren't even allowed to step foot on there. The military decided to use it as a bombing range and till this day it is not safe to be in certain areas of the island.
What are 2-3 specific events (please include dates & impacts) that occurred that set up military presence in Hawaii?
In 1908, the military set up a base in the center of Leahi, which is now known as Diamond Head. The military has taken over more than one location in our nation of Hawaiʻi. On the West side of Oahu a military training facility was set up in order to test and train instruments of todayʻs Modern Warfare. The military and government stole the land that we live upon in order to test their weapons without promising danger to themselves. In 1965 the military tested their bombs on Kahoʻolawe which decimated and filled the ocean with debris and nuclear waste. The radiation that flooded Kahoʻolawe did not stop those who knew what was right from standing up for their ʻāina.
How does media portray the military?
The media portrays the military as a noble and honorable thing to do for your country. They often have commercials showing the benefits of being in the military but never show what they have to do in the field. They make it seem like the military is a good place to be and is for everyone even though there is killing, poverty and trauma.
How has the presence of military & military needs affected the social infrastructure that surrounds your issue?
The presence of the military has affected our oceans in ways that you would not assume. When native Hawaiians speak of how our land is being used simply as a location for testing, we are making a fact known that we are being infected. The military uses our land and our home as a middle man to infect the ocean with their nuclear waste and their weapons. The military and their needs are making our oceans dangerous while they make our land insufficient for living.
Economic Impacts
How does economic theories like Capitalism & Communism impact or cause global issues like poverty?
There is an uneven distribution of wealth in the capitalist world and predicted a worldwide popular uprising to distribute wealth evenly. Ever since, nations have wrestled with which direction to turn their economies. With Capitalism being the main “ethnicity” of an economy, the working class will be at an advantage on rising poverty.
Which economic idea is better: communism or capitalism? Explain why.
Communism represents a utopia, an ideal world in which no one is rich or poor, everyone has an equal opportunity to do what they love without worrying so much about being paid for it, and there are no social classes to divide people.
Does Capitalism still work? Does Capitalism cause poverty? Or social injustice?
Capitalism works. As a pure system, capitalism only doesn’t work when goods are not traded for value . However, we are often incompatible with capitalism. It is indeed true, in one specific sense, that we can say that capitalism causes poverty. It's also equally true that the statement "capitalism causes poverty" is entirely wrong given the way that it is generally meant. No
Who is / what is Karl Marx economic theory & what did he say about capitalism?
Marx claimed that capitalism was nothing more than a necessary stepping stone for the progression of man, which would then face a political revolution before embracing the classless society. Marxists define capital as "a social, economic relation" between people (rather than between people and things).
