ALTERNATIVE FUTURES: HEARING VOICES OF RESISTANCE BECOMING VOICES OF CHANGE FOR OUR LAHUI
Gultang seems like a reliable person. The predictions he has made have been accurate and there is reason to believe his prediction on the U.S. is true. Trumps decisions have not been the greatest and do not seem to greatly help the U.S. The election of Trump further pushed Gultang's beliefs about the economy of the U.S. falling. These decisions that Trump has been making are showing how Gultang's predictions are becoming more and more real. One negative thing from the European times was how there was always fighting and the only way of solving the worlds problems was fighting.
Our goal
Our goal as citizens of our community is to look upon world problems and try do something to solve one that we find important. In an ever changing world, we found that in fact one of the biggest problems is global warming and the compromising of our ozone layer. The main cause for our ozone layer depleting and global warming is pollution. So, we looked to how pollution affects us most in Hawaiʻi. In Hawaiʻi, the places most noticeable with pollution is in fact our ocean/beaches. This is why we chose keep our waters clean as our kahiau project.
Kahiau Update #5
-->How does economic theories like Capitalism & Communism impact or cause global issues like poverty? - Braedyn
- Capitalism and communism has major effects on global issues such as poverty and such because capitalism makes things in the economy harder and even worse for people without money. When going through epidemics about communism, there are issues in our economy as well. When this happens, it can be extremely hard for the people in our society suffering from poverty to ever escape it. In order to get rid of poverty or even decrease it, we need to get rid of communism and capitalism .
-->Which economic idea is better: communism or capitalism? - Brede
- Capitalism, unlike communism if the government or a community fails itʻs because of the individuals and they suffer the most but with communism if the government or community fails it affects everyone. Not to mention capitalism rewards those who work and punishes those who donʻt. Communism makes everyone equal so you could be working 15 hours shifts a day in back breaking work getting the same amount of pay as the guy next door who only works 5 hours a day signing papers, not fair right? If you work your butt off shouldnʻt you get more money then the guy who works way less than you in a less intense job? If you make good choices go to school and set yourself up for the future shouldnʻt you have better options in terms of jobs and opportunities than a highschool dropout?
-->Does Capitalism still work? Does Capitalism cause poverty? Or social injustice? - Brede
- Capitalism still works because itʻs a system of checks and balances. Whatever someone does is checked and balanced fairly so no one can have complete control over others. Capitalism doesnʻt cause poverty itʻs the choices people choose to make that does. If you dnʻt want to go to school or college you canʻt expect higher paying jobs to take you over those who did. Thatʻs exactly what happens, people like to blame poverty on the government or other people but donʻt realize that your life choices affect your future. Social Justice isnʻt caused by capitalism and itʻs reinforced by the fact that capitalism focuses on the individuals progress, the more you put into your life the more you get out of it. Now if you talk about personal greed then that's where we can see a lot of social injustice with corrupt politicians, employers, etc.
- The Karl Marx economic theory is a theory consisting of sociological and economical threats to the economy. He says that capitalism is wrong and how it should be brought down in order to save our economy. “Modern economic theory, particularly microeconomic theory, attempts to understand the whole of the economy through an examination of its parts: households, firms, and prices in markets, for instance. Marx, on the other hand, started at the level of the total society and economy and analyzed them by examining their influence on their components. Thus, in modern methodology the major causation runs from the parts to the whole, whereas in the Marxian scheme the whole determines the parts.”
--> As a result of World Wars I & II, how did the Cold War period and a renewed focus on capitalism & corporate businesses perhaps contribute & set up your particular global issue? - Brede
- The cold war was when everything started being in demand like housing and resources. One example is california's coastline which was inhabited by thousands of people leaving only 1/5 of the original coastline accessible to the public. This in turn led to more concentrated beach populations and a higher pollution rate due to people from all over bringing trash along with their families. Not to mention nuclear testing in micronesia which led to nuclear fallout thats still there to this day along with its effects on the ocean around the test site and radioactive materials leaking into it.
Globilization
Kahiau Project week 4:
Give definition of the terms Colonization/Imperialization = Globalization as it applies to what weʻve been discussing in class
--> Give background history and role of the Colonization/Imperialization = Globalization in a different (not previously mentioned) 3rd world / non-European country other than America/Hawaii
Globalization for different countries is much different than our own. In the U.S. Globalization is the advancements of technology and its use in our government and such. In other countries such as China, It might just be to become more efficient in their ways of income/revenue. In China, they are more about efficiency and want to be able to mass produce products to make more money for the country, not its people. Its people work for next to nothing pay.
--> Give specific dates / events in history where the role of Colonization/Imperialization = Globalization was evident in Hawaii (At least 4) that have contributed to the challenge that your group has chosen to address
The year of 1893 was the date that Hawaii got overthrown by the white people. This was the time that the white people colonized in our islands and took over many land divisions. This relates to our topic because this is the reason we have so much trash on our ʻāina. The foreign government allowed many other cultures to come into our nation and do whatever they wanted to do. No one is doing anything about this problem and thatʻs the reason we didnʻt want anyone to come over from the mainland.
--> Explain why those events your group chose to mention sets up the role of Colonization / Imperialization = Globalization and its effects in Hawaii today that plays a role to set up your issue in Hawaii today.
Going back to how globalization affected china, making everything about efficiency and paying little in return. That is a selfish way to further develop your country, much like Hawaii, we became a state due to others greed. Illegally we were overthrown because of a group of sugar plantation owners with no political power to do so. Globalization and imperialization seeks to expands for profit. Sadly it doesn’t care who it affects in the long run. With America making us it’s 50th state it also opened up the doors for tourism which is now our main source of income. But with that being said it attracts all kinds of people, many of whom don’t care about our islands because they don’t live here. Pollution is a product of this and every year it shows more and becomes a bigger problem.

Kahiau project modern warfare
What are the effects of Modern Warfare on your Kahiau issue?
What is the history of military influence in Hawaii?
What are 2-3 specific events (please include dates & impacts) that occurred that set up military presence in Hawaii?
How does media portray the military?
How has the presence of military & military needs affected the social infrastructure that surrounds your issue?
- There do not seem to be effects of modern warfare on our Kahiau issue of pollution in our oceans. The only problem I could see with this is that the navy disposes of their nuclear waste in the oceans at times.
What is the history of military influence in Hawaii?
- Since the overthrow there has been a military presence in the Islands. From helping Haoles take over our land to using us as a WWII base. America's military has had a strong impact and role in how Hawaii has developed. Not really for the good of it though.
What are 2-3 specific events (please include dates & impacts) that occurred that set up military presence in Hawaii?
- January 17, 1893 was the overthrow which marked the first time U.S. military had a strong and lengthy presence.
- December 7, 1941 Pearl harbor was attacked, pushing the U.S. to protect the islands and form a stronger military presence.
How does media portray the military?
- As a heroic force thats protects us which it does, but at a significant cost to us as natives. Not only to Hawaii, but to the whole mainland. In reality, it is a terrifying force that threatens other countries and scares them into not attacking us.
How has the presence of military & military needs affected the social infrastructure that surrounds your issue?
- Nuclear Arms Race has left parts of our land destroyed by the military due to nuclear testing. Examples are the water table being destroyed and contaminated, 50% of all Hawaiian land being used solely by the military, and the fact that the military itself serves as a reminder of what has happened to us as a people.
