Applying The Expansion Concepts
In our empire there were many factors that changed the way people viewed their lifestyle. Exploration, Exchanges, and Expansion are three factors that has affected globalization. We believe that with each given topic, they showed a sense of development. Through Exploration, society started evolving all over the world. When Europeans and other regions started exploring more than just the land that they live on it altered the way everyone viewed the world. Before many discoveries it was known that Earth was flat. This discovery was proven wrong my explorers who would come back and educate their people on what was out there. Exploration affected the Spanish Empire because when we had no resources left we depended on skilled individuals to bring back resources from around the globe. Through Exchanges, In the 1600s Spain had shipped majority of their products to other regions. They would provide food, nails, paper and basically everything. They contributed to globalization by being a part of the global trade. This was called the Trans-Atlantic Trade. Through Expansion, the Spanish empire was affected through its labor laws. In the 1600s-1700s the government decided to not be a part of making laws for laborers. It would be the task of the Trade Union. These all contribute to the way that society has been shaped throughout the years to become the way it is now. Our topic was chosen because of the problems that have recently been affecting the Spanish Empire. But the problems have developed over time through changes in society. This is globalization.
The major concepts that impacts our topic the most is exchanges. Drugs became a global issue because of exchanges, which helped to increase the number of drugs we have here today. In the old days, people traded many goods for drugs and they still do now. The goods that were traded got more severe as time went by. A report in San Francisco talks about people exchanging sexual intercourse for drugs.
Exchanges brought wealth and access to foreign products and enabled people to concentrate their efforts on economic activities best suited to their regions. Now in modern America and Hawaiʻi, we believe that this has greatly impacted society today and how everything works. For example, cultural exchange. This is when there is a mutual and beneficial sharing of cultures and beliefs.
Drugs are a big topic in the world we live in today. It’s a getaway from reality and sometimes people tend to feel like they need that. With everything going on in a person’s life, it gets too much to handle and they want to find an easy way out. If we were able to manage drugs in an Independent Hawaiian Nation, we think that it would be a good idea to have it pass through the government.
Some solutions or government positions to have in place are rehab centers to watch the people who have fallen so far because of the use of drugs. I donʻt feel like drugs need to be completely destroyed but I do feel like it needs to be managed a lot. We would need to keep a close watch on the things being shipped in because most of our drug supply are being shipped in illegally. We need to be very careful on what comes in our island. Another solution could be having more support groups or having more awareness of how to get help and when is the right time to get help for drug abuse.

Agriculture to Industrial Revolution
When the shift from Agriculture to Industrial Revolution occurred, it created this ranking system that separated people by how wealthy they were. Economies transformed and affect all class of people. The rich become richer, the middle class grew, and the poor remained poor. Factory wages were low, working conditions were harsh and dangerous, and the overcrowded cities were swarmed with families seeking for jobs. The industrial revolution made a lasting impact on all people but did not benefit equality at all. Those who were able to get better jobs were able to enjoy having the privileges of being comfortable. On the other hand, the poor remained stuck at the bottom which caused them to continue to live in miserable conditions.
Drug Abuse in the Spanish Empire
In 2006 Spain had the highest number of cocaine users in the world. In 2007 well over 2 ½ tons of cocaine was seized at Madrid’s Barajas airport alone. As a consequence, drug usage in Spain has increased because it's encouraged by the new wealth produced across Spanish society by the long economic boom of the past fifteen years. The real problem is cocaine in which has spread rapidly through Spain during the past ten years and is distributed through the drug distribution networks previously set up for heroin users. However, cocaine has spread though every part of Spanish society from the poor to the educated and wealthy.
Drug Abuse in Hawaiʻi
In 2013, the state of Hawaii lost 120 of its residents to drug-related deaths. Unfortunately, 61 of those deaths were related to methamphetamine use. The financial toll on the state of Hawaii due to meth abuse is about $500 million a year. This problem causes people to lose their jobs in which they also need healthcare services for their addiction and treatment. Meth is also closely connected to violent crime and theft in Hawaii. Much of the violence and theft that occurs in Hawaii is because of meth.
Reasons Why
As a person continues to use drugs, the brain adapts by reducing the ability of cells in the reward circuit to respond to it. These brain adaptations often lead to the person becoming less and less able to have that pleasure from other things they once enjoyed. For example, a person’s environment includes many different influences like family and friends. Factors like peer pressure, physical or sexual abuse, early exposure to drugs, stress, and parental guidance can affect a person’s likelihood of drug use and addiction.

Revolution is a fundamental and sudden change in political power and political organization which happens when the population revolts against government typically due to perceived oppression whether that be political, social, or economical. The criteria that sets up the Revolution to occur is when the population revolts against the government because of social, economical, and political oppression. Since the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy Queen Liliuokalani on January 17, 1983 it has caused many controversial conflicts. Hawaiians have been upset for years because our leader was overthrown and in came a new government system. This is an example of a revolution. Just like the French Revolution there was a drastic change in both social and political because now there was a new set of laws made by completely different leaders. Socially everyone was distraught and at a loss for their queen they did not agree with the overthrow but there was nothing that could have been done at the time. Now to this day people still mourn for our beloved queen and are fighting back for independence. Currently we are facing many problems with our land. On Hawaii island Mauna Kea is the center of the land. Being the tallest mountain from sea level, the government is supporting the construction of a 30 meter telescope. This has caused people to take action by protesting, marching, and blocking the access to Mauna Kea. This has been going on for over 100 days which has caused many officials to start worrying about the project. This is a possible sign of a start to a revolution. Many Hawaiians are in agreement that they don't want to be a part of America.
After the decolonization of our nation, if there were to ever be a revolution due to drug abuse, my committee and I would expand our resources and resort to other committees for assistance. Statistics show that most of the drug abuse population are in poverty. To prepare for any sort of revolution because of drug abuse, weʻd talk with the poverty committee about how we can help their population decrease. Maybe weʻd form a class people in poverty would have to take to help their economic status and show them other ways of coping with it. Working together with various committees would help prepare us for a revolution.

Our 2 Philosophers
During each presentation of the philosophers, the first person that stuck out was Thomas Paine because of his quote and perspective. He stated that, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again”. Thomas Paine was an English American writer and pamphleteer whose common sense pamphlet and other writings influenced the American Revolution and also helped pave the way for the Declaration of Independence. Connecting this to our Kahiau project, I believe that we do have it in our power to restart but we need to start with the right people. Without the proper authority or guidance, people will turn to a easier way of life. Our Kahiau Project is about drugs and how they impact an individuals life but also how we can make some type of change. What Thomas Paine stated makes me think about how much of a change would happen if we had the right leaders. The other Philosopher was Jeremy Bentham. Jeremy Bentham was an English Philosopher who was defined as the "fundamental axiom" of his philosophy. He shared a theory with John stuart Mill that stated “an action is right if it tends to promote happiness and wrong if it tends to produce the reverse of happiness—not just the happiness of the performer of the action but also that of everyone affected by it.” This theory is basically saying your actions are usually right when it results in a positive impact. The theory also states that you canʻt make decisions only for yourself because it may affect everyone around you. I feel this connect to our Kahiau Project because the people who get addicted to drugs put themselves in that situation. Benthamʻs theory was proven right in many situations with drug addicts. It was the wrong decision for these drug addicts to start abusing drugs and the results of their action proves me right.

The Industrial Revolution
In the lecture on Industrial Revolution we established the sense of how industrial revolution rapidly increased after being introduced. The revolution started when coal was discovered and people realized that they could create a new form of energy through the burning of coal. This later lead to the creation of steam engines. In 1698, Thomas Savery was the first British inventor to create a steam engine. Steam engines brought new jobs and during this time period many people who lived in the country moved to urban areas in search of jobs. During the industrial revolutions jobs became a necessity and that meant long hours of work for the population. I think that in a way this affects a modern issue in Hawaii being drugs and substance abuse. Our Kahiau project topic is based on how people in Hawaii are affected by drugs. I think that work is a factor that stresses many people out and in a way. This could cause people to want a way out taking drugs is one way to “help” their problems.

The Era of Expansion, Exchange, and Colonization
Throughout last semester, we were able to expand our knowledge of Empires. When mentioning exploration, it helped the people to do an overland trade route which turned into an overland sea route; this way of trading turned out to be cheaper. With this, they believed that there was a much bigger place outside of where they reside. They turned out to find more about other continents and cultures. Exchanges brought wealth and access to foreign products and enabled people to concentrate their efforts on economic activities best suited to their regions. This also facilitated the spread of religious traditions beyond their original homelands. This caused the transmission of diseases. Continuing on, we went over the “Silk Road” as well. This was also a way the people were able to trade. The most popular trading item was silk because it was only produced in China at the time. With all of this, development through time connects back to our Kahiau project about drugs. In modern Hawai’i, drugs are a problem because of what the people with the power don’t do.
Impact
Hawaiʻi has been through a lot of unfortunate events, but so has many other places around the world. What many people don't know is that our Hawaiian Kingdom was illegally overthrown and Hawaii was influenced by America. This had caused an immediate change in language, status, leaders, and most importantly freedom. In many places like Britain, Rome, and Byzantine they have also been through a similar situation where their power had been taken as well. When missionaries came to Hawaii in the year 1820 they influenced Hawaiians into adopting religion, language and customs. With the continuous series of events, Hawaii has never been the same since then.
Research Page Reflection
The first digital thing we've learned is figuring out how to work this website. We've never used this in any of our classes for projects so this was a new experience for all of us. The second digital thing we learned is where and how we would place everything on this website to make it clear enough to read or understand everything. The first personal project management skill we learned was turning in screenshots on time. Throughout the process of putting together the website, we needed to make sure we got every new change that we needed every week. The second personal project management skill we learned was communication. We needed to be able to split the jobs and makes sure that everyone was doing their part in this whole project so that none of us felt as if one wasn't doing enough.
This Kahiau Project has taught us a lot. One social issue we learned was about the impact of drugs and how we are affected by it too. Sometimes people use it as a coping mechanism to turn away from reality and sometimes people use it to gain money. The second social issue we learned was class and how people were ranked. It's sad to know that we weren't all equal. Some with money were ranked higher just because of a piece of paper. Some were ranked lower because "they didn't have enough." The third social issue we learned was poverty. We linked poverty and drugs together because we learned that poverty may be the root issue to people using drugs. Poverty is also a big problem because not having enough can really take a toll on you and everything else in your life.

PSA
When shooting our PSA, most of the shots were complicated and we had to be creative which required us to think out of the box. The first personal thing we've learned throughout the PSA process is to be patient. Not every first shot is going to be perfect so we needed to take the time to watch each shot we've taken and decide if we're going to move onto the next or try again to be satisfied. The next personal thing we've learned is keeping our mind open to new ideas. Like I've said before, the PSA process did require us to be creative. With that, we did research on other videos to see what we could do more and how we could capture our idea. The first digital skill we learned is figuring out how to include the actual text messages in the video with the sound of sending a message. The second digital skill we learned is timing. Putting together something like this, we decided to really listen to the beats of the song and try to match it with the video.

The first personal connection we've learned through this process was making sense. Connecting this to our background research, we wanted to utilize questions that connected with them but also connected back to the big idea of this Kahiau Project. The second personal connection we've learned was knowing if something was too much or too little. We looked at each question and told each other if one question stated or asked too much and if one question was too broad. The first digital connection we've learned is assembling both assessments. The second digital connection we've learned was how we wanted it to look.

The first personal thing we learned throughout making the word puzzle was strategizing. With the amount of research we had to put into this whole project, we wanted to put in the words that stuck out the most or held the most significance to our topic. The second personal thing we learned throughout this process was being creative with this portion and not be too hard on ourselves to make it perfect but we did follow the rules. The first digital thing we've learned while making this was how to use the website we created this on. We had to include the words, how we wanted it to look and how much words in the rows. The second digital thing we've learned was placement for the words; where the words need to be.

The first personal connection we made when making this flipgrid was to keep it settle. We wanted to give out the most important questions to include in this flipgrid to highlight the significant parts of our project. The second personal connection we made was also being creative. We wanted to make this flipgrid enjoyable so that it didn't seem so harsh and dreadful. The first digital connection we made was figuring out how to create this whole thing. It was complicated at first but we figured it out eventually. The second digital connection we had was making our video to include into the flipgrid so that they could play the video just incase they needed something to go off of.
