Silk Road, Exploration, Expansion, and Enlightenment“Exploration and inventions such as the printing press ultimately changed the way that information was transmitted with people of culture” (Akana, 2020). Everything became more connected and people could understand one another which helped exploration. People could learn the truth from reading and history could be kept. The next concept is Exchange. “Some things that were traded were things such as spices and silk. Some other things that were traded were economic activities and religious traditions. However, even things such as diseases were transmitted from person to person” (Akana). There was also the slave trade that happened. When the revolution occurred and the silk road was physically closed due to it being boycotted and the network shut down. However, because of it people trade and move to become more of an advanced society. “The silk road which linked much of Eurasia and North Africa represents a major advance in long-distance trade”. (Akana) The silk road itself is gone physically, but it still lives on when we trade with others for good and change culture. There were a lot of impacts of colonization, some good and some bad. The ideas and advancements were huge impacts on the entire world and our lives today. Scientific discoveries from the past influence our present and future. However, the colonization does include things such as disease and sometimes even loss of culture due to natives not being very tolerant of diseases. All these concepts helped the improvement of evolution and many had agrarian societies in order to raise cash crops. Civilization and technology evolved because of the concepts presented. So how does this affect our UN Goals and Kahiau project? The topic of the Silk road, Exploration, Expansion, and Enlightenment all connect to the goals and project. Since our goal is to teach quality education, It is important for us as a lāhui to understand what is happening in 2021 because we can learn from the past to make ourselves have a better future. We can learn from our mistakes and become more of an advanced society. We can learn about how the world isn’t perfect and how people can be corrupt at times. We can even learn about the agrarian societies in the past and may be able to use them today. The great thing about modern times is that because of exploration, enlightenment, and colonization we have advanced technology and are able to do things with more precision than we did in the past. We are all connected with one another with having individuality so we should be able to make use of it and change the world that we live in for the better. APA Citations:

The most important connection between World History and current event advocacy is that by learning about the past we are able to make changes today. Without learning about the past we wouldn’t be able to remember what we need to advocate change for in the first place. Everything is connected through history and it gives us an idea of what we should change and what we should keep the same. World history gives us an understanding of how the world came to be and shows us how we are different from others. We can use this to make changes peacefully and make equality. The most impactful idea that I have gained through our guest speakers about the importance of media advocacy is how we are able to change the world in our own ways. Media advocacy requires evidence, research, and mastery of the topic at hand. Our guest speakers have taught us that it’s possible to make changes through things such as movies and documentaries. Our generation is based around technology so we could use that to our advantage to advocate for a better future. Everything can change because we have the power to voice our opinions through technology and media. APA Citations

It gives us a fundamental understanding of what we think we could change and what we can keep the same. I think art isnʻt the only thing that could show social concerns in history. By learning about art it also broadens my horizons to be able to advocate for change in different ways. We can use things that we like to do to call for change. For example, things such as writing, and discussion can be enough to showcase concerns. I basically think that we can change the world in our own way. My poem is about the Kamehameha statue in front of ʻIolani place. I chose this inanimate project because I feel as if it would experience the most change due it being able to see Hawaii change over the years. My poem reflects how the statue has seen Hawaii change from being able to rely on the land to being modern and confused. When everything becomes more modern we become attached to our electronics and if they were to ever disappear we wouldn’t be able to last. In old Hawaii, our ancestors were able to make their own food off the land, but nowadays we rely on things such as supermarkets and other places bringing food to us. My poem discusses the problems of modernity and how sometimes I wonder how we would have been if we were back in old Hawaii. APA Citations

Today we can say our society holds modernity because of it, I can say that this revolution greatly impacted our kahiau project in both good and bad ways. “The new energies in forms of coal and steam were great and impacted our lives immensely, but it is also what caused us to start to take our resources for granted (John Green, 2020). Our Kahiau project talks about sustainable energy so that we can use it for the next generations. If we use up all of our resources it would leave us to inevitably run out of energy for the world. Through the study of history we have seen people run out of resources, so we have to try and learn from our mistakes and change. From understanding history there are many things to learn about cultural history. We are able to make connections with the past, present, and future of both our cultures and different cultures. “The mistakes of the past help us to advocate for change today. An example of this is the thirty meter telescope where we want to stop it from killing natives animals on Mauna Kea”(Hofschnieder, 2020). This is a perfect example of using advocating for change to stop something that can hurt our culture. APA Citations

We were colonized in the past when captain cook arrived in Hawaii and changed Hawaiians forever. We were changed socially, emotionally, spiritually, culturally, physically, and more. Since then our Hawaiian ancestry has started to take a fall, and we dont truly understand who we are as Hawaiians. It hurts our modern efforts to meet these challenges because to help the world, we have to understand ourselves. An example of this is how there is no way many Hawaiians can recite their genealogy like they did before. History can always either be remembered, changed, or forgotten. Many times in war, its history is determined by the winner who gains power. Since we are part of the United States we are told and given history on the battles and influenced through diplomacy and military forces. Language, cultural history, and language in the community all were influenced by the states. An example is the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani, where our native language was banned and we were forced to speak English. For us to understand what problems we have in Hawaii we need to be able to understand our culture and need to find a solution to these problems in Hawaii. The U.S has deterred us from being able to find solutions to problems in Hawaii because of the imperialism that Hawaii has faced. APA Citations
