Next Step Shelter took the clothes! When we got there we didn't expect the wearhouse to be that big. In total we donated nine bags of clothes and I'm sure the kids and adults will be excited to get some nice clothes so hopefully they can go out and get jobs to support themselves and their family. I'm really glad I got to do this because it honestly made me feel good to help others and I will continue to donate to their shelter because I love what they stand for and what they do for the people of our land. I really enjoyed this project and am glad that we had to change our project so much until we came to this project idea and made a difference in peoples lives for the better.

Overall I would call our Kahiau project a success. We got to make a difference in our community and help those in need. We went from trying to start a surf competition, to waiting almost a month for a basketball tournament that turns out wasn't going to happen. Finally we end up at a clothes drive where we got nice clothes to give to some pretty cool people. Our goal was to give them the clothes to give them a better appearance for society to accept them so they could get a job and be successful. We will ask the people who receive the clothes to stay in contact with us to see how a piece of clothing will hopefully help make a difference in their overall life and success. This taught me to be a global citizen by teaching me to accept everyone as a human no matter what. Outward appearance doesn't matter as much as inward appearance and who you are as a person. You are apart of my family because you are human and I've learned to accept all people for that. This project has helped me understand individuality and to be accepting of everyone.
Our first half of our Kahiau project has been completed which was collecting clothes. We are going to drop off the clothes and shoes and other supplies this weekend to next step shelter and goodwill in Waikiki and Kaimuki. We have successfully collected at least 6 trash bags of clothes in great condition that others will be glad to have. We washed the clothes and they are ready for donations. Once these are donated we will have successfully finished the project. Next-Step shelter is a shelter in kaka'ako that deal with the distribution of clothes and housing to the homeless populous. We want to help further this cause because we believe in clothes for all in need. This will help everyone recognize global citizenship and that no matter who you are you can make a difference.
We will be conducting the project on Saturday, April 29th in Kaimuki, We figured this would be a good idea because of how crowded then town is and how close the town is so they would support it. All of the clothes we gather will be donated to GoodWill Kaimuki and to Next Step Shelter in Kaka'ako. Our project connects to being a global citizen because our project is to help all people in need of clothes, shoes and other items that are necessary to survive. We don't want people to feel like that one kid in elementary school who felt left out because his family couldn't afford the cool transformer backpack or the new light up velcro sketchers. Everyone deserves to have clothes and not face the public shame of "looking homeless". Our project is also to help lower stereotypes on homeless people. Maybe giving them nice clothes will help them get a job and become self-sustainable again.
Once again our project has to change. We finally got an answer from the park manager and state and basically we couldn't do it. So we are now changing our project to a clothes drive. We want to help the homeless populous have shirt on their back and shoes on their feet. We are looking to donate to the homeless shelters in town and are looking to make a difference and see more homeless clothes neatly and nicely so maybe they can get a job and start a new life. So far we have been absorbing the lessons in class and those lessons helped us decide to do this project instead. Over the next couple weeks we will be collecting donations and by the end of April will be giving all the donations to the homeless center in town.
Still haven't heard a definite yes from the park director but it looks to be good. Now we just need to hear back from St. Judes and get the okay for us to say we have them on board for sure. We also need to work on getting the permits for the sound system and court usage so we can use the outdoor courts also. By update 6 we should have a definite answer so we can get the ball rolling
Today after school hopefully I will have the chance to meet with the director in person and give her the idea for this tournament. Also we will be contacting St. Judes to see if they would be okay with us raising the money for them and if they would get behind this "movement" to ball for cancer and hopefully help us make this tournament amazing and successful. The director of the park said that a meeting will help us get the okay for sound usage and permit for the tournament.
We need to change our project so we came up with the idea to have a basketball tournament to help raise money for St. Judes Cancer Research Center. We now need to talk to the director about having the tournament and getting the necessary permits to be able to hold the tournament and make it legit.
