Reflecting back to World War 1 and 2, the scientific advancements made in the name of technology, was worth the cost to humanity for its gain because in the end there were winners and losers. If The Americans had not created the technological advancements of nuclear weapons such as the little boy and the fat man, the likelihood for the end of World War two would surely have not come to an end. But because of this technological advancement, came to continuous testing of newer and more dangerous weapons of war. An example is the bomb ‘bravo’ that was issued upon a deserted island on the marshal isle. It was said to be the biggest nuclear bomb to ever be tested in the United States, but because of this, they never warned the citizens of its affects, causing death and destruction among their communities. Children were given birth deficiencies, families passed down lines of cancer, many died from this test. The government deemed it an “accident” but with the lack of information given to the public, only worsened the situation. With new technological advancements, comes rewards and consequences. The use of these advancements are only beneficial for the war effort, and should not become a higher priority of the people and the land itself. Such as TMT on Mauna Kea, TMT officials have tried to reduce the projects environmental effects that it will have on the land. They tried to find a more remote area to put a 1.4 acre long and 13,290ft tall telescope. But it is proven that it could pose a threat to the Mauna Kea aquifer that provides supplies of water on different parts of the island. “TMT supporters believe enough has been done to ensure there’s no water pollution and argue that the socioeconomic and scientific benefits of the telescope supersede any lingering environmental concerns.” That’s not sufficient for longtime opponent Kealoha Pisciotta, a plaintiff in two cases challenging the telescope. Pisciotta, who leads the group Mauna Kea Anaina Hou, said there hasn’t been a comprehensive study of how the telescopes have affected the water supply. (Hofschneider) It also may put endangered speciest such as the Wekiu bug, which is already deemed to be on the endangered species. And Overall, Mauna Kea is a sacred place that has many traditions and meaning behind every part of the mauna. And nothing should taint that, and certainly not having a country who has colonized us and ruined our culture, take anymore away from us.
Hofschneider, A. (2015, December 17). Does the Thirty Meter Telescope Pose Environmental Risks? Retrieved from https://www.civilbeat.org/2015/04/does-the-thirty-meter-telescope-pose-environmental-risks/ The events from Gandhi and the Rabbit Proof Fence reflect the British mindset when dealing with ‘Āina by constantly colonizing the land thinking it will fully benefit both sides. But from these stories, it is seen that the British have the obvious advantage and power over the minority.
There are similarities between the British and modern American/Hawaii examples that we’ve seen throughout our past and our present. From both mindsets, they colonized empires and kingdoms who were already self sustaining and destroyed their culture and even their ways of life. They both bring new technology, but in the process bring disease, conflict and greed. Their influence has always caused a negative impact in our lives, but as the present becomes the past, many forget what has happened to our kupuna. As the rise of empires created competition for more land, technological advancements were also put into place, creating a new global state of affairs around the world including Hawai’i. These technological advancements from World War 2 worsened the situation in Hawai’i today by creating more weapons of war that would harm our environment. New bombs, planes, ships and guns have influenced Hawaii by making Pearl Harbor a target, for being the only port that ruled the pacific. If I could speak to the world leaders during the Treaty of Versailles on behalf of the bombing of “Bravo” in Moaninuiākea, I would tell them to evacuate the people, no matter if it's a test subject. Because even though the bomb itself did not kill them instantly, it brough different cancers to their people, causing mothers who were pregnant to lose their children, and families being broken. Though the bombing was an ‘accident’ it still was written in many records of its existence and it's effects. Not giving a public announcement of the bomb itself and how much damage it would do is a crime in it itself. From what we learned about WWI, factors that we should consider that set up Germany to start an act of war from the Treaty of Versailles. It was a truce signed on June 1918, it was a treaty of truce between The winners, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States and the losers, Germany, Austria and Hungary. The treaty in sorts, blamed the loser for everything that happened. From this Germany lost territory they had won in the Franco-Prussian war were taken away, they were demilitarized, no airforce, needing to pay fees to allies, and dropping of their economy. From this, the rise of hitler began, Germany became more patriotic and a dictatorship, from this they were able to create a new political party. This might set up an act of war to plot a revenge against their allies and to gain back the power they had once lost.
