PAUAHI & OSEI BONSU
These two leaders both positively impacted their societies and established good and strong futures for them.
Pono's iLeader
Bernice Pauahi Bishop was born on December, 19, 1831 in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. She attended the Chief’s Children School, which was renamed as the Royal School. She died on October 16, 1884 due to breast cancer. Osei Bonsu was born on 1779. He was the king of Ashanti and reigned from 1804 to 1824. He died on January 21, 1824 in Kusami, Ghana. The traits these two leaders exemplify are hardworking, determined, impactful, hōʻihi, hoʻomau, and haʻahaʻa. Pauahi resembles these traits through her pure heart and Kamehameha Schools. She was determined and worked hard to create a good foundation for the next generation of young Hawaiians to be educated. She was respectful, and never gave up until the illness killed her. She was very humble and impactful to the Hawaiians today. A quote she says is, "I desire my Trustees to provide first and chiefly a good education in the common english branches, and also instruction in morals and in such knowledge as may tend to make good and industrious men and women." As young Hawaiians and students of Kamehameha Schools, this shows that we have to fulfill her goal and become good and industrious men and women. Osei Bonsu shows these traits through his dedication and empire. Osei Bonsu was determined and worked hard to fight against the Fante Confederacy to expand the Ashanti empire to the gold coast line. He had to push through them for the welfare of his people. Although he had to fight them, he still had much respect for them like a good leader should. Once he was victorious, he was very humble and didn't brag. The outcome resulted to more gold and a larger empire. A quote he says, "A rich and mature life involves opening up to a wider world. If we base our understanding of life only on what we personally experience, we are impoverished indeed.” This shows that we have to have an open mind and look deeper into things.
WALTER RITTE & OSEI TUTU I
All people want in this world is their rights in their home lands.
Walter Ritte & Osei Tutu I both fought hard and strong for their people who they never gave up on. they fought for what was right and what sould change for the better. Walter Ritte Jr. was born on April 12, 1945 on the island of Maui. He is currently still a Native Hawaiian activist and educator from the island of Molokaʻi. Osei Tutu I was born during sometime in the 1660ʻs in Ghana. He was the first ruler of the Ashanti empire and was aided by Okomfo Anokye, his chief priest. He reigned from between 1675 & 1680 to 1717. He later then died hat same year due to a war in which he had been caught by the element of surprise, but still fighting for his people.
GEORGE HELM & OSEI KWAME PANYIN
Osei Kwame Panyin and George Helm were two leaders who had very different impacts on their societies. Osei Kwame Panyin was born in the year 1765 and died in 1803. He was from His reign was from 1777-1803. George Helm was from Kalamaʻula on the friendly isle of Molokai. He went to school in Oahu to receive a better education. He was born in 1950 and died at the age of 26 in 1977. He passed away lost at sea. Although there is very few information about Osei Kwame Panyin, many sources state that he was considered a cruel king. He killed many of his family members and ordinary people too. He was a very ignorant person. He and George Helm were two very unalike leaders. George Helm was a good person who wanted to stand up for what he believed in, as he was a native Hawaiian leader and activist. He was determined to never stop fighting for Hawaii and the Hawaiian people. Osei Kwame Panyin and George Helm were two leaders who had entirely different influences in their communities. Osei was a bad person and a bad king to his people. George was a good man for fought for Hawaii and he died protecting it.
