Charles 1 of Austria & Eddie Aikau By Kainalu C.
Charles 1 was born on August 17 1887. He became the emperor of Austria- Hungary in 1916 Charles was a man of peace and didn’t like the world war. He used all of his efforts to get Austria- Hungary out of World War 1. He died at the age of 34 making his wife a widow and she mourned for the rest of her life. She only wore black until she died at the age of 96. Eddie Aikau was a very famous big wave surfer. He is recognized all around Hawaii for two things. One being his skills in surfing, and the other being his time with the Hokulea. Eddie Aikau was a leader because when the Hokulea capsized he stepped up to try and save them. Both Charles 1 of Austria and Eddie Aikau were both very interesting people and both very well known for their leadership skills. To the left is a poster of them with their leadership skills in the middle. They are Wiwo'ole, Hoihoi, and Ikaika. Which mean fearless, passionate, and strong respectively. They were both well known for these leadership skills as they both exemplified these skills greatly. Charles 1 used his resources to help get Austria-Hungary out of World War 1. While Eddie Aikau swam off into the ocean to try and get help to save his crew on the Hokulea. They were both amazing leaders.

Ferdinand II of Aragon & George Helm By Dustin K.
On March 10, 1452, Ferdinand II was born in Sos, Aragon to John II and Juana Enriquez. Ferdinand grew up to be an impactful king, reigning over the Spanish kingdoms of Aragon and Castile from 1479 to 1516. Throughout his life, he fought tirelessly for what he believed, never failing to be a leader for the people of the Spanish empire. It is precisely this ambition that allowed George Helm to become a leader for the Hawaiian people as well. Born George Jarrett Helm Jr in Kalamaʻula, Molokaʻi, George was an inspiring Hawaiian activist and musician. From a young age, Helm’s voice was his most powerful weapon, speaking up for those too afraid to speak on their own. Both of these men are remembered in history because of the leadership traits they portrayed. The passion, courage, and persistence of Ferdinand II and George Helm allowed them to become influential leaders during their time. Ferdinand and George were influential leaders because of their passion for their people. Ferdinand was one of the first rulers to transition his people into modern society. Tarsicio de Azcona writes, “From 1475 to 1479 Ferdinand struggled to ... transform the kingdom politically, using new institutional molds partly inspired by those of Aragon.” Ferdinand also created European and international policies that would benefit the Spanish people, as he cared so dearly about them and wanted them to be advanced in the New World. Similarly, Helm desired for his people to access to their natural resources, so he educated people of issues the Hawaiian community was facing, in hopes of spreading awareness. The video, Kahoʻolawe Aloha ʻAina - George Helm, shows footage of George visiting high schools and colleges to inform people of his message and what actions need to be taken. Both Ferdinand and George shared a passion for their people, motivating them to help their people in any way they could. In addition, their courage to create change also allowed them to become influential leaders. Ferdinand II made a bold decision when establishing religious laws. The article, Ferdinand II, states, “This policy of modernization included a ban against all religions other than Roman Catholicism… to enforce religious uniformity and the expulsion of the Jews (1492) ... a deliberate policy designed to strengthen the church, which would in turn support the crown.” Ferdinand believed that Roman Catholicism was an important religion, and demanded everyone in his kingdoms be introduced to it. Although many disagreed with him, he stood firm with his decision, and it became dominant throughout Europe. Likewise, Helm’s bravery was shown when creating lawsuits against the U.S. Navy. An article from, the Maui News, reads, “Aluli remembered working with George Helm on a civil suit the ‘Ohana filed against the Navy in 1976. They pored over federal laws on marine protections, endangered species and indigenous rights, trying to find all the statutes the Navy had violated. They researched other places the Navy used for target practice.” Despite the Navy being in firm opposition to return Kahoʻolawe to the Hawaiian people, George continued to file lawsuits and even spoke with politicians at an attempt to force them to stop. Ferdinand and George both faced people of differing opinions, but they continued to take risks anyhow. Furthermore, with persistence in achieving their goals, Ferdinand and Helm became influential leaders. Ferdinand is best known for uniting the kingdoms of the Spanish empire into, what is now, Spain. An article by Encyclopedia Britannica talks about Ferdinand’s journey in conquering the kingdoms, and the many wars he fought to assume control. The arduous wars Ferdinand faced were most definitely challenging, however, he continued to fight with the vision of bringing together the Spanish people. Comparably, George Helm created and joined multiple organizations in his fight for aloha ʻāina (loving the land). Kamakakoʻi says, “George co-founded Hui Alaloa, a group formed to maintain Hawaiian access to natural resources and to resist against enclosure of Moloka‘i’s resources.” Hui Alaloa was one of the organizations Helm became involved in, along with the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana, and a movement he started, known as the Aloha ʻĀina movement. Helm continued to support these groups, fighting for the rights of his people to access their land. Both men did not stop persevering, focussing on achieving their goal the entire way. King Ferdinand II of Aragon once said, “Do not tell secrets to those whose faith and silence you have not already tested.” Ferdinand’s character was one of such force and strength, while George Helm’s was of pure devotion and integrity, saying, “Call me a radical, for I refuse to remain idle.” Both Ferdinand and Helm are such unique and different people, with distinctly different beliefs. However, they were both able to become leaders during their times because of the traits they shared in common. Ferdinand and George Helm became influential leaders because of their passion, courage, and persistence.

Philip I of Castile & Bernice Pauahi Bishop By Keahe L.
Some things Philip I and Bernice Pauahi Bishop have in common are leadership roles, owning land, and both monarchs. Philip I was born on July 22, 1478, in Bruges, Belgium, and died September 25, 1506. Then many years later, Princess Bernice Pauahi was born on December 19, 1831, in Honolulu Hawaii, and died October 16, 1884. They were both leaders, Philip I was the King of Spain (Castile) and reigned from 1482-1506. Long after his death came Bernice Pauahi Bishop in Honolulu Hawaii. Pauahi was Princess of Hawaii and founded the school that still stands today, Kamehameha Schools. Philip I and Princess Pauahi of course have many traits. Both of them are both great leaders, for example, Philip the great is also called Philip I the handsome because of him being very attractive. Another example comes from Princess Pauahi. She founded a school after her great great grandfather Kamehameha the Great. The school mentioned earlier is called Kamehameha Schools. One of Princess Pauahi’s sayings she left for her school is "To erect and maintain in the Hawaiian islands two schools, each for boarding and day scholars, one for boys and one for girls, to be known as, and called the Kamehameha schools." She left this as a reminder this is for native hawaiian children. And for Philip I, he never ha that much sayings and I was never able to come across
