Compare & Contrast (1) of the following: historical fall of Rome, Great Britain (Ghandi), USSR (Iron Curtain during Cold War), with the pending fall of America that is being predicted soon.
The fall of America is to be in 2020 --- four years away because of American fascism. American fascism would cause tremendous global violence; a vision of American exceptionalism as the "fittest nation"; a belief in a coming final war between good and evil. America wanted to be the strongest. This relates to the fall of Rome because a fascis was a birch rod carried in ancient Rome by the lictors, a kind of proto-police force. The Romans were racist in outlook, and many of the Founding Fathers of the United States were slave-owners

If Imperialization is: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force;
-->What are some examples of how Capitalism & corporate economics (Walmart/Walgreens/Target, etc) is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue? The nature of capitalism is to reward profit. Capitalism creates incentives for managers to pursue profit over decisions which would maximise social welfare. For example, here in Hawaii, some stores charge people for extra when there is a surplus. This relates to my goal because it can make it harder for the homeless to buy things and this isnʻt right. -->Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to these issues that connect with poverty or other social challenges (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? This is something to consider because all of the homeless people should be able to at least go to a store and get something to eat. Capitalism makes everything more expensive and can prevent homeless people from buying food for them or even their family. The homeless people deserve to eat. -->What, if anything, are you learning about how economic trends impact your Global issue and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? An economic trend that has really impacted Hawaii is tourism. The Hawaiian islands are already populated enough but more and more people are coming to either live in or just come to come. This has impacted the homeless because the money being given to the government is being used for something else like a giant rail but not really for the homeless. I see this as unfair and this makes homeless people a worthwhile problem to be addressed because they deserve the money, not the rail. An example of globalization on my island is the airports. The airports are the main reason for the tourist coming to my island. They act like everywhere on the island is a scene and stops in the middle of the road to take a picture. This relates to the goal because tourist bring in money and this money can be used to be giving homeless people homes. Or the tourist can even donate money to the people who live here.
This is something to consider because my family works at an airport and the tourists really do notice homeless peoples, especially here. My uncle works at the airlines and I think he would want the tourists to donate to the homeless people. Globalization the process by which businesses develop international influence like Starbucks or something. In Hawaii the airports are huge because everyone wants to fly here. It changed my look on the homeless I noticed that small community centers that care for homeless can develop like airports and powered by tourist in a way. What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
An example of colonization is on my home island on the coast of Kauaihae. Kauaihae is my fishing grounds and the military is coming to make the coast their training lands. This relate to an UN goal because it is against it. Us fishermen canʻt be sustainable if our land is yet again taken away for their own benefit and not ours. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? I see a personal connection because I personally have been fishing on this coast for most of my life. Fishing helps me perpetuate my Hawaiian roots and provides food for my family. This spot is the best spot on my island and I know this because I have fished everywhere so if it is taken away then it will be harder to go fishing somewhere. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? I learned that colonization and globalization play huge roles in how poverty works. Economic growth is the main channel through which globalization can affect poverty. What researchers have found is that, in general, when countries open up to trade, they tend to grow faster and living standards tend to increase. The usual argument goes that the benefits of this higher growth trickle down to the poor. |
