Ashanti, Africa has many problems that lead to poverty. Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. To try and help to fix these problems, we are going to create a slideshow presentation to show our classmates what is currently happening in Ghana. We are going to create a website to further inform People on how we can fix these poverty problems. Our goal for this project is to get people further educating our peers about their situations of poverty. We hope through this we can make a difference through this. There are many UN Develop goals that go with the topic of poverty. We know that poverty is an ongoing issue all around the world and that it affects many people. An important development goal in Ashanti would be goal 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation”. For example, according to wateraid.org, more than 6 million people in the world do not have access to clean water and 23 million or eight in every ten people don't have a decent toilet. Poor access to clean water has been an ongoing issue for a long time now and we want to help those who need it. Another UN Development goal is goal 3 “Good Health and Well Being”. For example, according to the homeless world cup.org, 39% or 5.5 million of Ghana’s population live in slums. Homelessness has also been an ongoing issue that Ghana is facing today, homelessness is due to the number of people in Ghana and money problems. We are going to try to address these problems by informing people about the problem of poverty. Works Cited: What is poverty? (n.d.). It connects with the factors that are working together to create the issue of "poverty" because they both relied on technology to help improve their economy. In our presentation, it showed how people weren’t productive farmers then became more productive through technology. For example, if we didn’t have this technology we would not be able to find easier ways to farm crops like how Ashanti farms their crops. Also in Guns Germs & Steel’s presentation, it showed the development of the printing press. This is an example because like that printing press, today we have things like the printer or other ways to get information. Works Cited: Guns, Germs, and Steel [Video file]. (n.d.). In the movie Gandhi, he handled the onslaught of colonization and imperialism to win back India through peaceful protest. In the movie Gandhi, one of the protests he'll lead the men walked holding up signs and protesting verbally and the white men started hitting them with sticks getting greatly injured. Even though people are getting hurt, everybody was standing up for themselves and having people help them along the way. Like in the movie of Gandhi it related to black lives matter. For example, in an article, It says, that during the peaceful protest policemen were seen unlawful force including beatings just like in the movie Gandhi. Gandhi is a model of decolonization in modern society across the globe because he believes in peaceful protest and non-violence. This can relate to people in Hawaii for example how we had the Mauna Kea peaceful protest. Also, they’re many leaders like Hinaleimoana Wong that aid in the lead of these peaceful protests. Colonization & Imperialism had many negative effects on Africa, like the cruel treatment of natives. This correlates to the UN Development Goal because the way people were treated caused poverty. For example, from an article, it says, “Slaveholders whipped, shackled, hanged, beat, burned, mutilated, branded, and imprisoned slaves. Slave women were often subject to rape and sexual abuse.” This just goes to show the way they treated people caused people many poverty problems. Colonization & Imperialism contributes or worsens modern revolutions happening currently because in society right now, the white community has power. For centuries, the white community has had power and control and colored people have been oppressed. The Black Lives Matter movement is an example of a modern revolution and colonization and imperialism have worsened this. Another example of colonization and imperialism would be the spread of diseases. This can relate today because of things like COVID-19. This can relate to Hawaiʻi because these things are also happening here. Sources: Boundless. (n.d.). Boundless US History. The developments of WWI, modern warfare tactics, and the results of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse the topic of poverty because these three factors only bring violence and destruction. Although Africa has not seen the effects of war, they do face an issue which is poverty. Widespread poverty was also seen in Germany after the first world war had ended. Germany, Hungary, and Austria were the allied countries that lost the war. The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to lose territories, decrease their army, and they paid over two billion in funds to their allied countries. Technology has improved since World War and the political shift in the Treaty of Versailles contribute to happening currently. New technology has been a big part of Word War 1. For example, things like flamethrowers, poison gas, tracer bullets, interrupter gear, aircraft carrier, and etc where all new technologies. These new technologies used in the war is worsening what is happening today because these new technologies are being used for horrible things. For example, from an article, it talks about how a person was shot by a gun here in Hawaiʻi. This just goes to show how technology is being used for bad things, not only here in Hawaiʻi, but all over the world. Sources: 12 Technological Advancements of World War I. (2017, April 30). An aboriginal site is an existing land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists. They also predicted that there are many more to be discovered. One of the first artifacts they found is that are at least 7,000 years old. Also, in archaeological sites, they found a single artifact that is 8,500 years old. Many of the artifacts had marine life growing on them they also identified a number of worked stone tools, including two possible grinding stones. Geography Theme: I think geography has a lot to do with this event. I think the themes of geography in this event would be location, place, movement breaking news, and human-environment interaction. First I chose place and location because this event happened in Cape Bruguieres Channel, off northwestern Australia. I also chose movement because they have to have movement to find these ancient sites. Lastly, I chose human-environment interaction because for example how marine life was growing in these ancient sites. Also because now the sites are underwater I think it would go with the theme of human-environment interaction. Reaction: When I was reading this article I was really interested and wowed. I would say I was interested because we also learned about aboriginals in class. in one of the books and movies, we read called “ The Rabbit-Proof Fence” we talked about how aboriginal people we're treated differently because of their color. This can also relate to our project because we talked about poverty and the way people treated aboriginals back then cause poverty. This goes with our project because the way they treated Africans’ color and race caused some poverty issues. Also, this can relate to Hawaiʻi because what's happening with this black lives matter movement. --> Address these questions: As we approach 4th of July Americaʻs Independence Day - HOW does it all work together to create the kahiau conflicts we face now in Hawaiʻi nei?? What can we do to prepare our Lāhui to meet these challenges in the 21st Century?? As we approached the Fourth of July an independence day it works together to create the kahiau conflicts of poverty we face now in Hawaiʻi nei. Independence day it works together to create the kahiau conflicts of poverty we face now in Hawaiʻi nei because Hawaiʻi got their state stolen away from them and when Hawaiʻi got their independence. When they got their independence it was a big thing. Poverty plays a part in this because when they go there state was taken they faced poverty since the businessmen were in charge. We can prepare our Lāhui to meet these challenges in the 21st Century by working together as a Lāhui to discuss how to fix the problems that come our way. This is how Independence Day works together to create the kahiau conflicts of poverty we face now in Hawaiʻi nei. Bibliography Citation Guy, J. (2020, July 02). Although America has lost a few wars, it connects with the political impacts of America as a dominant Empire. For example, in an article it states the Cold War shaped American foreign policy and political ideas and impacted the domestic economy and the presidency. It also affected the personal lives of Americans, creating a climate of expected conformity and normalcy. This relates to our kahiau project because even though Africa had nothing to do with the Cold War, they still face the issues which the world wars created. An issue that modern warfare has created is the issue of poverty. Although Africa did not play a part in the wars, the effects of the wars are seen worldwide. Although the Cold War has helped with the advantage of more weaponry in the world and increased the development of nuclear weapons for the military, after the war, studies say that there had been more developments of nuclear technology in science, energy, industry, and especially in the medical field. This situation is a connection with ongoing threats of the safety of imperialism of America because with the new nuclear energy and the technology there is, anyone could get ahold of it. The wrong person potentially could ruin the world. When a nuclear source is exploded, it causes an extreme release of radiation into the environment which not only affects the earth but human lives as well. It can leave hundreds of thousands of people hurt and worse, dead. With this being, the military shouldnʻt have even begun with this war in the first place or came up with nuclear devices. All those nuclear devices and technology have brought is pain and destruction. Cited Work: Naranjo, R. (n.d.). Historical analysis of the Cold War. One restaurant, Square Barrels, has dropped 80% in revenue. Also, one lady states that “On some really good days, we got up to like 30% losses, but I mean really when you think about it, 30% losses in any other time would be pretty devastating”. The US Department of Treasury has helped more than 24,000 Hawaii businesses and non-profits receive PPP assistance. They say if they can still control this and then fight to keep these businesses open. Geography Theme: I think geography has a lot to do with this event! I think the themes of geography in this event would be movement, place, and location. First I choose movement because they're making a move to keep their businesses open. For example, how they went to the capital to protest is a type of movement. Lastly, I choose place and location because these small local businesses are in Hawaiʻi. This is why I think geography has a lot to do with this event. Reaction/Connection: My reaction to this event was really proud and kind of sad. I would say my reaction was proud because they are sticking up for their businesses and don't want their businesses to fail. I also felt really sad in this event because if I was in their shoes, I really wouldn't know what to do because if people aren't coming to your small business and that's the way you make money I would be worried as well. We can connect this to you because this event occurs in Hawaiʻi. We can connect this to our Kahiau project because the exact same thing is happening there. This also makes me really sad because this is not only happening here but worldwide. Work Cited: Lakuma, C., & Sunday, N. (2020, May 19).
