Three issues we chose from our empire project were quality education, poverty and health. We all agreed that these issues were bigger problems here specifically. The final debate was between poverty and health, but we all knew people who have passed away due to health issues so we ended up picking that one.
This is a problem that does not just affect Hawaiʻi, but everywhere around the world. Sickness has been a problem that has drastically killed civilizations.
Health issues in Hawai’i are just like other places. People are sick everywhere, but some places have a higher chance of getting specific diseases due to history or climates in the area.
The UN Development Goal that our project addresses is Good Health and Well-Being.

Revolution
The shift from the Agricultural Revolution to the Industrial Revolution created the challenge of the Scientific Revolution in our ancient empire. The Agricultural Revolution was the transformation of human societies from gathering and hunting to farming. In 15,000 years ago when we were foragers and hunters, we began adapting and spending less time on hunting, and more on art, music, and storytelling. From the revolution was a huge jump to the Industrial Revolution but whatʻs in between? In the Industrial Revolution, we began creating larger societies with urbanization and cities, etc. In the middle of this was the series of events that marked the emergence of modern science. We began to develop in mathematics and sciences. The challenges were developing and adapting to each different revolution.
The ongoing flux of the Industrial age continues to challenge us on a daily basis. There is still sickness all over the world. Many different diseases such as cancer do not have a cure yet so the death rate is still at a very high amount. Other diseases such as diabetes, and autism are things people today are born with and are not able to able to get rid of. These diseases are very dangerous because they take the lives of many people. This is how our problem is still affecting people in the current day world.
Our empire went through struggles with health just as every other human would. When their empire grew, there was a bigger variety of diseases. That impacts us because when the white men came to Hawai’i, they gave us diseases that we never had before. With the diseases they brought their culture which is different from the Hawaiian culture. This was not good for Hawaiʻi because our culture died.

French Revolution
Reflecting on the French Revolution, there were many things that led up to it. The biggest thing was the way the commoners were treated. The country was in debt and the government continued their selfish acts of partying, not caring about who it affected. One of the most iconic acts was when the man was beheaded. This was basically allowing all other actions to occur without consequence. If the commoners were treated fairly and like humans, this revolution would have never happened.
Yes, there are signs of revolution in the French Revolution in modern America and Hawaii. There were fundamental and relatively sudden change in political power & organization which can be political, social, or economic. An example would be changing governors in Hawaiʻi every two years. In modern America, the President changes every four years. Hawaiʻi was involved with World War 2 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor adding America into the global war. Although the war did not include causes such as taxation or rebellion, there was political change.
When Hawaiians were in government, their medicine products weren’t advance. They didn’t use drugs or machines, they relied on natural products. Although their medicinal products were less advanced, they didn’t have much severe diseases. The severe diseases were brought to them when the white men came. Now it would be difficult to rely on our old ways. I would keep the modern medicinal products for the health of the people.
Some solutions is to find more cures, or maybe use the money we pay for taxes to help hospitals find cures for diseases. Another solution is to put out more advertisements about the sicknesses in Hawaiʻi. There are also solutions like always keeping your work space, or house clean so that their isnʻt any bacteria. Another option is to always wash your hands after you do things.

Expansion Concept
One of the four major concepts which impacted globalization to set up our Kahiau Project was Exchanges. Things that were “exchanged” between societies and communities were things such as diseases. This affects our globalization because diseases that we cannot treat and are forced to deal with are unstoppable leaving many populations to fend for themselves. The major concept(s) that impact our Kahiau Project today are exchange of diseases. Although it is very uncommon for brand new deadly diseases to be passed around, common illnesses are often transferred from person to person. In modern day exchanges impact modern America because there are trends just like there were in the past with silk. A lot of people like to buy things with name brands. With that, some companies grow larger than others because of what the trend is in that time. We can be prepared to handle our challenges as an Independent Hawaiian Nation by standing strong for what we believe in. Power of the people. When handmade poi was outlawed, as a lāhui we came together at the capitol to rally for the culture. This just shows how strong we are an Independent Nation. The other thing we have to prepare for is the current government in Hawaiʻi. Basically being able to stand for what we believe in keeps us current and relevant to the government of Hawaiʻi. By fighting for health care, everyone involved can be more aware of the Hawaiian nation and government in Hawaiʻi. Some solutions or government positions to have in place is maybe a protest organizer. This would be good because they could organize what we as a people need to do to stand up for our rights and what we believe in.

Enlightenment, Industrialization, Colonization & Imperialism
The two philosophers that greatly impact our kahiau project topic is Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton. Francis Bacon was an English philosopher from England. The theory that connect to our project was the Development of the scientific method which was influential throughout the Scientific Revolution. This theory connects to our project because science is a very huge aspect to use when trying to help an ill person, without science we wouldnʻt have medicines to help people. These theories continue to impact my groups Kahiau issue in modern Hawaiʻi because when our culture was dying from illnesses, the westerners brought over medicines. The second philosopher that greatly impact our Kahiau project is Isaac Newton. Isaac Newton English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author from England. The theory that connects to our project is his exploration of the three basic laws of motion. This theory continues to impact our Kahiau project in Hawaiʻi because when people get sick the doctors need to know how their body works and why their bodies arenʻt working. With Isaac Newtonʻs discovery doctors now are able to do so.
The Industrial Revolution had a great impact on wellness of people all over the globe. As times changed and the world got more advanced with trade, there became more medication and ways to better your wellness. During this revolution, the world changed and their came more manufacturing companies. With the increase in exchange from different countries, there were many new resources for any situation. From the connection came more and more medications and ways to treat the illness. Another way the Industrial Revolution impacted wellness is the amount of jobs that came from the revolution. This helped mental wellness and gave people and opportunity to provide for themselves and loved ones.
The two propelling factors that occurred during the Era of Expansion, Exchange, and Colonization were equality and modernity. Modernity happened because of colonial expansion & imperial ruled marked by conquest, killing and taking over natives. Same thing that happened in Hawaiʻi when we were taken over by America. That transfers into colonization where foreign people came to our land, took over and gave us unequal rights. Modern Europe saw itself as a product of Enlightenment where some of its results included equality. In result of natives being seen as below the white people, we never got the opportunity to have the same amount of health care. Similar to how when foreigners brought disease to our islands, only they were immune to these new viruses, not the Hawaiians.
Two propelling factors that happened and mostly impacted our Kahiau project as a result of the Era of Imperialism is the competition between nations and the fight for power, which can cause the rise or fall of empires. The empires fight for it through war and other violent acts and many get badly injured, or even die. Many people get wounded and hurt by Health has been a problem all through history. The only thing that change over time is that the weapons have evolved. There are new resources that are easier to rely on. There is a variety of medicines and treatments due to years of research by many people. It continues to impact our Kahiau project, the topic being health, because many injuries come from the war both physically and mentally. Many need help after the war with their mental problems/trauma that they gained from the war. They fall into bad habits like alcohol and drugs because they don’t know how to deal with it. Health is an ongoing issue from diseases, injuries and mental issues.
