Our UN Development Goal
Our UN Development Goal that we are trying to address is, Sustainable cities and communities. This connects to the issue of “poverty” because the UN Goal is based on our ability to use Collective Learning to accumulate all our knowledge to solve the problem. In ancient Hawaii we were an Agrarian Culture who was able to survive off the things that were produced by the land but now in modern day Hawaii we rely on the shipments of food to our grocery stores. Since the introduction of Europeans which then led to our Agricultural Revolution this money is something we all are required to have and since some donʻt have they are unable to eat so they fall into the category of “poverty”. Poverty is just one example of this UN Goal being unsuccessful or not achieved in a certain area of the world.

This issue of “poverty” and rising cost of living it presents itself through, homelessness. We see this today by people living in tents on the streets. Some current solutions that are being tried is, shelters, donations, formulating a ten-year statewide plan, creating/establishing affordable housing and volunteering to organizations that help the homeless. Some specific examples of solutions being tried in Hawaii is, lowering the cost of health care, creating affordable housing developments, producing tiny homes and communities, providing a safe, functional environment for those in need to get service, free clinic, long term medical respite beds, and permanent supportive housing units.

"Impacts of the Agricultural & Scientific Revolutions & Age of Enlightenment"
It changed the way people viewed things about the world and helped develop new ideas that weren’t once thought of. Since we had people to advance our communities like the Enlightenment theorists we discovered things we needed. This issue of “poverty” or our groups focus problem of rising living costs is caused by wealthy families and companies. These companies purchase land that is cheap and undeveloped. They then build mansions, condos or hotels and bring up the value. According to the bureau’s most recent “regional price parities” model, which allows comparisons of buying power across the nation, Hawaii’s cost of living was the nation’s highest in 2017, at almost 19% higher than the national average. This shows that the development of this idea that money is the most important thing was an idea developed as a result of Agriculture, Scientific Revolutions and the Age of Enlightenment.

The issue our group is addressing is the “rising costs of living”. This presents itself in houses and mansions in the million dollar price range that many locals cant afford. Since these prices keep rising some are pushed out of the state or end up on the streets. You can also see this problem through the amount of buildings owned my american companies. This shows that since these costs keep rising only a few hawaiian are able to kick start their business. “In order to live comfortably in Hawaii, studies show that you’ll need a whopping salary of over $122,000.” This quote shows how expensive it is to live in Honolulu. Theorists also experienced challenges and community problems, some are similar to those we face today and are trying to find solutions for it. These theorists started off somewhere just like we are and eventually had major breakthroughs that allowed them to find a solution to their problem.

"Impacts of the Industrial Revolution & Rise of Class Stratification"
Ag/Scientific/Enlightenment and especially the Industrial Revolutions worked together to create Class Stratification worse for the problem of “poverty” through the introduction of money, slaves and farming. During this period, the idea that money could be utilized to purchase and trade many things worthy to an Empire led the idea that those with money are worth more than others. Since agriculture became very popular the need to get more workers to produce the products that get the money arose. The need for these workers led to the idea of using slaves to work the land and those who had this job were known to be less then. “Some of the most abject poverty in the world is concentrated in farming communities.“ This quote shows that through these developments ideas became common and soon the minds of many started to segregate people they believed were less and didn't deserve wealth.

The issue presents itself through the Industrial Revolution because it is a time where a new manufacturing process was created in factories. This new process consisted of mass production, assembly lines, and machine tools which began to show up more and more throughout companies to ease the process of production. These machines began to cause un-sustainability and pollution to rise. The machines ran on oil which harms air quality because of the exhaust that is produced. The rise of mass production and assembly lines also began to affect sustainability because when more jobs were created, more gas was used which also pollutes air quality. Although more jobs are helping the problem of poverty, it has its down sides. The rise of class stratification was a cause of homelessness because when classes were formed, it was difficult for lower class members to get employed by higher ranking and paying companies. Social welfare programs were being cut and high rates of income inequality were becoming an issue for lower ranked or classed people.

"Comparison & Contrast of Current Revolutions to the Case Study of the French Revolution in History"
King Louis XVI was the King of France from 1774 to 1792. He created a social hierarchy with three categorize. The 1st Estate which are the Religious people, The 2nd Estate which are the people with higher social status and acknowledged privileges, and the 3rd Estate which are the peasants. Because the King biased the 1st Estate and the 2nd Estate, the 3rd Estate got mad and started to riot. This connects to our UN Development Goal because our goal is Sustainable Cities and Communities or “Poverty”. This relates to this because the 3rd Estate which is the peasants. They get fined more than the others which are terrible. They went into Poverty and so they started to riot back against the King.

In America, there are riots over the killing of a black man. They riot for those who are oppressed by the color of their skins. They would break windows and even destroy buildings to get their points across. Even though they’re saying the protestors are doing a peaceful protest, there are some protestors breaking windows and stealing things like TVs and Chairs. Their solution for this are by using violent means to end the riots like tear gas and making arrest. In Hawaii, There are riots over unemployment. Because of the current Pandemic, People are not getting the money they need so they beginning rioting so they can get the mayor to give them their money or to open the jobs again. Some other examples of protest in Hawaiʻi were the Mauna Kea protest where Hawaiians would protest on Mauna Kea. This protest was a protest to stop the building the telescope on top of the Mauna. Another protest is The Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement where people protest about being a Sovereign State. These are some of the protests on Hawaiʻi and in America.

"Imperialism, Modern Warfare & Identity Crisis"
Our Kahiau topic is the rising cost of living. This issue correlates to the UN Development Goal Sustainable Cities and Communities. In Hawaiʻi, colonization and imperialism is the very reason for our rising costs of living because our islands were colonized by America. Perhaps issues of homelessness and low income families stems from the issue of our government spending lots of money on modern warfare instead of these issues. According to the Washington Post if the U.S. cut its military spending from “3.5 percent of GDP to 2 percent”, “Depending on which expert you ask, the chronic social ills the United States could go a long way toward addressing with an extra $3 trillion per decade include: homelessness, child poverty, college tuition costs, the national student debt burden, a lack of affordable child care and long-term health care for the elderly.”

The definition for colonization is to take control of an area and itʻs people with control and sometimes force. In the world, people take over animals’ habitats and kill them for their body parts. In Ancient Hawaiʻi, people killed off different birds for their feathers. They did this to make capes or to make crowns and other things. Today, outsiders would take down different habitats to make room for buildings and companies. They destroy food and homes for many native animals. And another example is when outsiders brought invasive animals and plants that would later cause the extinction of many native animals. In South America, Jaguars are being threatened by their habitat being used for farming and development and the Jaguars being illegally hunted for their skins. This has deeply decreased the amount of Jaguars in the South American Forest. Imperialization connects with Hawaii because it connects with the Mauna movement. This is because the Hawaiian people are trying to protest and march their way up to the telescope and telling the scientist that work at the telescope to move and take the telescope with them. Our project goal is sustainable cities and communities or “poverty”. People in poverty are moving to the sidewalks and are taking over parks. They use the issue of Colonization to colonize parks and sidewalks to live as homeless people.

"In between WW1 and WW2"
Our group's Kahiau project is mainly focused on the UN Development goal of sustainability. The sustainability of the environment that World War I was in is jeopardized when a depletion of natural resources occurred. One of most damaging war tactics was trench warfare. The trenches were dug from the North Sea to the border of Switzerland changing the landscape. Digging the trenches caused trampling of grassland, crushing of plants and animals, and churning of soil. Another damaging impact was the application of poisonous gas which polluted the battlefield and killed thousands.

Technology contributed to the scientific improvements of the World War and the political shift in the Treaty of Versailles in many ways. But it has also played a part in worsening the modern revolutions which are currently happening. Some examples of some technology that was used in the World War are the inventions of the repeating machine gun, poison gas, and the introduction of the first tanks. Some political shifts that were caused because of the Treaty of Versailles were that the Germans lost 10% of their land, Germanys overseas colonies were taken away and shared with the allies, and they had to pay compensation to the allies for causing the war. Some examples of revolution issues that are currently happening are the Black Lives Movement which is happening all over the world and even the Kū Kiaʻi Mauna protests.

"Between WW1 & WW2 & The Great Depression"
Our kahiau project issue is the rising cost of living which connects to the UN Development Goal sustainable cities and communities. The Great Depression was a time of widespread poverty in America and the world. The after effects of which we could still be feeling and as we begin to enter another Great Depression as a result of massive job loss with Covid-19, we will continue to have poverty which results in homelessness. This connects to our issue because a direct effect of rising cost of living is more poverty and homelessness in that community. As well both of these issues connect to the Malthusian Flux theory because widespread poverty in the theory is said to be the cause of overpopulation.

Some connections we can see today to the effects of World War and the Great Depression is Covid-19. We can see similar things like unemployment, low pay, low food, stock market numbers plummeting down and in Hawaiʻi tourism has gone down a whole lot causing our state to loose money. During the Great Depression of 1929 to 1938 the experienced very similar events. Unemployment connects to great depression because during this period there was a peak of unemployment throughout the world of 24.9%. The political shift and interaction of Germany with the Treaty of Versailles connects very much so with the way President Trump reacted to the Paris Agreement in 2018. On behalf os the U.S. he backed out of the agreement so America wouldn't have to pledge their help in global climate efforts. In other actions he has isolated America from Europe in a sense of Nationalism and this is a similar way of thinking to Adolf Hitler in Germany.

"The Great Depression & Atrocities of Imperialism & Nuclear Warfare"
Some developments of World War 2 & Nuclear Warfare that worsen my group’s Kahiau topic are Bombs, Guns, and Chemical weapons. The United States used bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to try and stop the 2nd War which made many left injured and without a home. The people that were injured from the bombs would go into a state of poverty and become homeless. Chemical Weapons and guns are used globally because of the current protest to keep protestors at bay. Police would use tear gas to stop protestors from moving forward and they would use tear gas if the protestors started to attack policemen. Police would use guns to shoot down protestors that donʻt cooperate with police and they would be shot with rubber BBs so the police wouldnʻt critically injure the protestors. And lastly, a discovery that was discovered during WW2 that helped the people in WW2 was computers and technology because it helped to keep the minds of the people who were in the era of WW2 on their computers. This also helped by starting the Technology age that we are in now. Schneider, B. (2020, January 03). Chemical weapon. World War 2 occurred since many countries were bitter because of how WW1 had ended. Germany specifically started it because they invaded Poland. Germany did this to regain their national pride as a response to The Great Depression. There are possibilities that WW3 could potentially be starting because of the conflict between the US and Iran. Currently, matters are just getting worse, Donald Trump's only solutions are threatening them with a nuclear war. Some connections we can make between the two are that both could start by two countries threatening each other. Although at this moment no big moves have been made in the matter. We can also see examples of what is happening with WW3 and what happened in WW2 in Hawaii. We see it with the conflict between Hawaiians and the US government illegally occupying us and building a telescope on our sacred Mauna. We also see examples of this with the Black Lives Matter movement. My Kahiau topic bridges the historical issue with the national and local issues in current events because my Kahiau Project is about homelessness and sustainability. If things get too out of hand the conflict between the US and Iran could lead to nuclear war. Riots and looting could start again with protests. Both could potentially lead to the pollution of land and maybe even poverty if homes are destroyed.

"Impacts of the Cold War"
Some development of the Cold War and the way America handled the battles were mostly based on Nationalism. Some of the decisions they chose to make were similar to the way America interacted with Hawaii or other land it occupied. Since they have this huge value and would do anything they have taken the roll as one of the dominant empires of the world. This greed and wanting more made the issue of poverty worse in Hawaii and in the United States. It connects to the rising costs of living through the influence money has on the society during todays time. Our UN Development goal of Sustainable Cities and Communities is shown as a goal during times like the Cold War and because of this is a goal a lot of people are working towards everyday.

We can see today that the issue of poverty is prevalent in many countries in the world and 74% of the worlds population is living in multidimensional poverty. There is also 736 million people that live in extreme poverty and are forced to survive on less than $1.90 a day. These numbers connect and reflect just some of the issues faced during times of war. For example, in the Vietnam War there were many that had to go into war and because of this and many died. Since there was so many casualties, protests started up and made America rethink how much defeating Communism is worth. The cause of these wars and ultimately the loss of so many lives was for the power it would give to the country. In modern society we can see how America creates partnerships with some nations and maybe rivalries against others. Through poverty and the rising cost of living we can see how much countries can value their own nation and because of it, develop industries that rise the cost of living.

"Empirical Globalization in the 21st Century"
Our kahiau topic is the rising cost of living which connects to the UN Development Goal sustainable cities and communities. One thing that most if not all Global Empires did during development was enslave or at least commit atrocities against the native people already living there. For a closer look into how this affects society in the 21st Century, let's focus on America’s history. America first committed atrocities against the Native Americans who lived here to gain land and then enslaved African people to help them build America by working on plantations. Once the enslaved people were set free, the racism against them morphed into segregation and once those laws were abolished, systemic racism and prejudices in all areas of America.

We have to prepare and teach our Lāhui and the future generation of people of color to contend with the ongoing issues around the world. The main issues that are going on now are the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the protesting against police brutality and bringing justice to those that were killed. Some ways we can help to protect them are by teaching them and making sure they know and are fully aware of what is happening and the many possibilities of what may or may not happen. Some solutions are not hiding the truth and bringing it into the light and making other aware of what is clearly happening. We can also get justice for those whose lives were wrongfully lost and make sure they are not forgotten. Many people around the world are protesting and sharing how they feel about the Black Lives Movement and are trying to make a change. This also occurred in Hawaii and many protests were held to help bring this problem to light.(n.d.).
