Empirical Globalization in the 21st Century
The developments of the past empire in history have all contributed to our Kahiau topic. Starting from the Industrial Revolution when steam powered machines were introduced. This was the foundation for what we call water pollution today. As time went on new machines were made. Then when World War 1 came around the evolution of military technology started. From guns to tanks they were all invented. Each country developed their technology to always have an edge over the enemy. The evolution of technology didn’t stop there and it is still evolving today. Factories had to be made in order to mass produce their weapons. Each factory gave off steam and polluted water. This is how the past empires have affected our Kahiau topic.
If we teach the next generation what they need to know in order to contend with the issues to come. In Hawaii, Mālama ʻĀina is a very big concept. I think this is something that is important to teach the future generations. Taking care of the land is crucial and it helps us thrive everyday. We should try to prolong the life of the earth. If we teach them important lessons like mālama ʻāina it will only give positive impacts. We also need to get equal rights for people of color because if things like this are still happening it will eventually get more violent which no one wants.

Impacts of the Cold War
The evolution of technology during the Cold War makes our issue worse. When technology goes to another level so does the condition of the water. I think the Arms Race also played a role in harming the condition of water. Every country needed the very best weapons in order to compete in battle. And that means more factories had to be made in order to produce these weapons. Ever since the idea of technology was created the pollution of the ocean and water had become worse.
Some places around the world are still under a communist government. And this may be due to the USSR trying to expand communism. We can also think that countries are still trying to develop new weapons that can give them a better chance if a WW3 ever happens. We also have the constant fear that we can get bombed at any time without any warnings. The evolution of technology is good but it shouldn’t give us the thought that this can happen.

WW2, The Great Depression & Atrocities of Imperialism & Nuclear Warfare
Our Kahiau topic is clean water and sanitation. World War 2 made many developments in technology and now everyone is trying to keep up with this constantly evolving world. From guns to ships they are always changing and being improved. The bombings on the Micronesian islands also harms the wildlife and things around it because of the radiation exposure. As new things are made it is only going to harm the environment even more. People say that testing these weapons even though it comes with a cost is worth it. Having the environment be healthy should be a priority because it gives us food and oxygen.
The Arms Race is still going on. Every country is trying to make new weapons or nuclear weapons. You never know when one country will attack another. They are just preparing for something that could possibly happen. If they keep their technology up to date then there should be no problem in being a strong country in the war. Besides that there aren’t really many connections. Things right here in Hawaii could be happening right under our noses.

Between WW1 & WW2 & The Great Depression
The developments during and after the war were the things that harmed our Kahiau topic the most. Technology is a big part of what makes our topic worse. Even though there weren’t many things that harmed the water back then it was a start. Things evolve over time to do different things. The Treaty of Versailles was what started the next World War. If Germany wasn’t so punished for what they did then Hitler would have never become popular. And WW2 was probably like WW1. All of these countries are trying to develop new technology to get an edge over the enemies. During the Great Depression people lost jobs and the economy was poor. Some people went homeless and they could dump trash into the water. As time went on water got more polluted because of how the world was evolving.
We still see the same technology that was made by then. In the present day it has been developed and more useful than before. For example, airplanes were made back then and now there are various models of airplanes. We still see that different races of people are still getting mistreated. The Black Lives Matter movement is a good example. People of color are getting mistreated like before and now people see that it is still a big problem that needs to be fixed. Not only in Hawaii but all over the world people are protesting to get equal rights.

Connection to World War
The technological advancements during WWI impacted our issue the most. Planes and boats were made so they could compete in the air and water. This ultimately makes more air and water pollution. The Treaty of Versailles is a reason how the world started to evolve. Technology just evolved so much during this time. From factories to plantations. They all contribute to the pollution of water. Technology played a big role in making the issue of water pollution worse. The more it evolves the more good or bad it can do. New technology is being developed to make water clean. At the same time things are being made that can possibly pollute the water.
Technology of the scientific improvements of WWI and the political shift in the Treaty of Versailles contribute to the worsening of modern revolutions happening currently. Guns are a big advancement in technology during the war. They have evolved to what we have today. They are some of the most dangerous weapons to have. And most importantly it can cause death. Police officers have guns and military troops also have guns. However some people use it for bad uses. To prevent guns from doing more harm than they already have Hawaii has put some laws down. They prohibit people with mental or emotional illnesses from carrying a gun. Even though it doesn’t solve school shooting or other things involved with guns it still helps. In protest today sometimes police have to use rubber bullets to make protesters go away. They still hurt if you get shot by them. Guns are such a big thing in the world today because of how much harm they can bring.

Imperialism, Modern Warfare & Identity Crisis
Our issue is clean water and sanitation. There are not many factors that work together to make our issue worse. When places were colonized ideas were also exchanged. Steam powered machines were shared and overall it made the conditions of the water worse. For example, today we have factories and they give off so much polluted water. And this all started from the steam powered machines. If the Europeans didn’t colonize other parts of the world then there wouldn’t be as many factories today. If no ideas were shared it would make the overall water quality better.
I think this connects to the Black Lives Matters movement. All of the people protesting against what is going on are trying to gain power over the government to give equal rights/justice for what has been done. I think the idea of “Colonization & Imperialism” is helping people out with this protest. Even without that, people would still be protesting. People are standing outside with signs to prove a point. People all over the world are doing the same thing. I don’t know of any solutions being tried right now but all I have seen is police being violent towards the protesters. And that is not a way to end all of this. Our kahiau topic doesn’t connect to or bridge historical issues with national and local issues in current events. This is because our Kahiau project issue is about clean water and sanitation and it does not really relate or connect to current events.

Comparison and Contrast of Current Revolutions to the Case Study of the French Revolution in History
The French Revolution didn't have much of an effect on clean water and sanitation, but the Industrial Revolution did. The Industrial Revolution is a factor that has made our issue of clean water and sanitation worse. For example, with the evolution of factory machines and steam factories, our issue has become worse. Runoff from these factories are discarded into bodies of water, causing water pollution. Runoff from factories is a huge problem for water sanitation. Air pollutants from factories that produce coal and sulfur can also lead to high amounts of acid in streams & lakes.
The peasants in the French Revolution didn’t like how much they were being taxed and saw that the 1st and 2nd estates were not being taxed as much as they were. This resulted in them doing something to have everyone have equal rights. This relates to the Black Lives Matter movement because everyone saw that George Floyd was not treated correctly. Everyone wants to see that black lives get the same rights as white lives. Being treated differently based on your skin color is not right and does not make all men created equal. And because of that predicament people are starting the movement for Black Lives Matter. The movement is also going on in Hawaii. Our kahiau topic doesn’t relate to these issues at all since it involves clean water & sanitation.

Impacts of the Industrial Revolution & Rise of Class Stratification
The Industrial Revolution is one factor that has made our problem of clean water and sanitation really bad. With the evolution of simple things being made into factory-like machines. This is what started the issue. The coal used for the machines made steam which went into the air causing air pollution. And runoff from factories would go into bodies of water making the water very polluted. Runoff from factories is a big problem for water pollution. You can also say that people were put into a hierarchy because of this. People that didn’t have these machines during the revolution couldn’t keep up with the production of people that did have the machines. They would be more on the bottom because they were not important.
Cities all around the world you can see some type of factory giving off steam into the air. Air pollution is going on there and so will water pollution. Factories give off so much steam because of the burning of the fossil fuels they use. This contributes to water pollution because it acidifies rain and there are chances of chemical spills. Factories also dump hazardous pollutants into streams and lakes. Some solutions are oxidizers to help destroy the pollutants before it enters the atmosphere and also more efficient use of energy. If factories find more energy efficient operations then it can reduce the overall emissions.

Impacts of the Human Species and factors of the Agricultural Revolution & Agrarian Empires
Over time people have learned how to make water safe. Collective learning contributes to this because inventions from the past are used today to make water safe to drink. An example is boiling water that looks dirty. It makes it safer to drink because it kills contaminants inside it. Now other things have been developed to clean water even more. There are several steps to help clean out dirty/contaminated water. Water was also needed to grow crops for agriculture. This shows how important water was and still is. If the water is dirty then it can die or grow irregularly.

Water is all around us. We have water from our faucet and beaches around the island. In Hawaii the Ala Wai canal is a good example of water pollution. It has a lot of pollutants inside the water making it unsafe to go into. A person has died falling inside the canal. A solution that was proposed to clean it up was the use of essential microorganisms. They think this will target the debris and clean the canal. In China the issue is even worse. Most bodies of water are polluted because of human and industrial waste. China has taken actions to help prevent pollution. They closed harmful factories, built new treatment plants and also changed agriculture practices.

Impacts of the Agricultural & Scientific Revolution & Age of Enlightenment
These revolutions didn’t really have an impact on our issue. One revolution was the Agricultural Revolution. With farms, water was used to grow crops and raise livestock. For both of these things they needed some type of water source. And the use of it everyday made them figure out ways to gather water. One example is irrigation. Irrigation was a smart way to take what they needed for their crops. Even though it didn’t really impact the quality of water, agriculture was the foundation of one factor of water pollution. Pesticides we have today were made to control insect infestation and weed growth. Even though it comes with its advantages it has its downsides. The chemicals inside it are harmful to water and humans. There is potential for water contamination and acute or chronic effects in humans.
The water quality in China is very poor. It is to the point where homeless people don’t have safe water to drink. Algae blooms from pollution causes the surfaces of China’s lakes to turn a bright green. About 90% of groundwater in China is contaminated. Almost everywhere you look you can see some type of pollution in the water. In Hawaii we have many beaches. People go to the beaches and leave their trash. Garbage piles eventually build up and make the quality of the water worse. Organizations around the world are made to make sure our water is safe. Especially in places where the water pollution is bad.
