"Impacts of the Human Species and factors of the Agricultural Revolution & Agrarian Empires"
How do these factors work together to create the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
The UN Development Goal we chose to study was Life on Land, specifically on deforestation. Collective Learning, Agrarian Societies, and the Agricultural Revolution created this rapid loss of trees. According to the Rainforest Alliance, agriculture drives 80% of tropical deforestation. Due to the rise of agriculture, there is a need for more open land for crops so trees are being cut down.

How does the "issue" present itself (what does it look like, where can we see examples, what are some current solutions being tried) in modern society across the globe? and more specifically, here in Hawaii?
According to the World Bank, forests have lost over 3.9 million square miles of trees since the beginning of the 20th century. Many recognize this problem and some solutions include various organizations being created to help raise awareness and grow more trees. Businesses like Woodchuck USA, TenTree, WeWood, etc. plant a tree for every product sold. Hawaiʻi is known for being a paradise getaway, but the Hawaiian islands, especially Oʻahu has gone through so much deforestation. Urban Honolulu alone has lost over 76,000 trees in the last 4 years due to new high rises being built. Kauaʻi passed a law that states no building can be taller than a palm tree and 97% of the island is used for conservation and agriculture.

"Impacts of the Agricultural & Scientific Revolutions & Age of Enlightenment"
What factors in the Ag/Scientific/Enlightenment work together to create or make worse the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
Without Agriculture and the Scientific Revolution, we wouldn't have the society we do now. Agriculture forced people to take new jobs and also for the population to increase. Our Kahiau project is about deforestation and the only reason why deforestation is an issue is because of humans. Without the new economy, there wouldn't be farming, cities, etc. This also means that are no reasons to cut down forests. |
How does the “issue" present itself (what does it look like, where can we see examples, what are some current solutions being tried) in modern society across the globe? and more specifically, here in Hawaii where you live?
This is present in Hawaii because we have agriculture here. Hawaiʻi had sugarcane plantations and these changed the environment to fit their needs. Agriculture needs wide open areas so they cut down all the vegetation for sugarcane. High rises in places like urban Honolulu to make room for rising populations are also the cause of much of Hawaii's deforestation. Since we became the 50th state, deforestation becomes a bigger issue. |

"Impacts of the Industrial Revolution & Rise of Class Stratification"
What factors in the Ag/Scientific/Enlightenment but more importantly the Industrial Revolutions work together to create Class Stratification or make worse the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
The Industrial Revolution helped develop social classifications because of the growth of industrialization. Due to the rise in capitalism, people could become wealthier by gaining higher stages. Also, the similarity improvement on education throughout the population expanded the middle class. The more the middle class grew, the more necessary it became to build new cities and advance technology. Deforestation is caused by us humans because we choose to take our forests down in order to create working places, malls, stores, etc.

Hawaiʻis economy is greatly based off of industrialization. And because industry business aro so big here, we had to make a lot of room for their factories, and office buildings. So we had to cut down trees, but that evidently lead to deforestation in Hawaiʻi. And because there are so many industries, there is a pretty big low working class. Most of those people are immigrants or Native Hawaiians. Ever since the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893 and the rise and fall of the sugarcane industry in Hawaiʻi, these particular minorities have had many struggles with making livings, and often have little to no opportunities for education and success. These particular minorities also make up most of Hawaiʻis poverty rate. In order to move up the social scale, a person was required to have a certain amount of intelligence, a certain status, even a certain amount of money. This option was almost non-existent for Native Hawaiian and immigrants. Ever since the colonization of Hawaiʻi things like education, money, and status were unavailable for them. Which also kept them on the lowest level of society, and made it almost impossible for them to move up.

"Comparison & Contrast of Current Revolutions to the Case Study of the French Revolution in History"
What factors in the Industrial & French Revolutions give an example of a situation made worse that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
The Industrial and French Revolutions relate to our UN Development Goal of deforestation. During the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution, factories were being built and agriculture was still taking place. The need for this room led to the cutting down of trees leaving less oxygen being produced and more carbon dioxide being released. This makes the issues worse as climate change may have been a big cause that led to the French Revolution, starvation of the poor, and the execution/killing of many people. This is because unusual natural disasters and geographical issues can be caused by climate change. These included droughts, heavy rainfall, and harsh summers and winters. These disasters ruined harvests for the peasants resulting in little to no food and a rise in hunger. However, the religious leaders and nobility did not see these issues did not feel the poor’s suffering. This enraged peasants and the poor over time, leading to gatherings of activists, riots, protests, and even storming the palace demanding for change. This violence would continue to grow, leading to the eventual French Revolution and change of government.

How does the “French Revolution" compare to modern revolutions happening currently (what does it look like, where can we see examples, what are some current solutions being tried). Give examples in modern society across the globe? and give more specific examples of what this revolution issues looks like, here in Hawaii where you live? How does your kahiau topic bridge the historical issue with the national and local issues in current events.
The French Revolution was caused by political and economic changes in society. The 3rd estate was upset with the government because they were starving, overworked, and being taxed too much while the upper classes were out partying. This caused the 3rd estate to protest and overthrow the government, which started peaceful and ended violently. This event in history reminds me of the Black Lives Matter movement or even the Civil Rights movement. All three of these events started because of certain groups in society being treated unfairly or as less than.
An example that is similar to the French Revolution in Hawaiʻi is Kū Kiaʻi Mauna. This also started because people felt they werenʻt being treated fairly. In this case specifically, the people of Hawaiʻi felt that their land wasnʻt being cared for properly. They felt that, “Mauna Kea is unique in the world, a place of deep significance in the Hawaiian worldview, and home to rare Hawaiian plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet.” This is similar to our issue of deforestation because the land isnʻt being treated how it should. Although we do need the resources from the trees, there is no need to wipe out entire ecosystems.

What factors of Colonization & Imperialism work together to make worse your Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study? (share which goal that is) Use APA format to Cite lecture or sources from class & pics you use to illustrate to support your reasoning as to why this issue exists.
Colonization and Imperialism were things that greatly affected many native cultures and colonies. And two of the things that it brought along was industrialization and capitalism. My team’s problem in the Kahiau Project is Deforestation. Something that industrialization and capitalism needed in order to thrive. In order to have a capitalist type economy, industrialization needed to be implemented. Forest and trees had to be cut down to either make room for the industries or become the source of their products. Of course, greed took over the industry owners’ drives and evidently impacted the forest and its ecosystem very negatively. The ownersʻ and people above wanted more open space and more products. But we all know too much power causes an imbalance. Deforestation is what the issue is called and it has many forests all over the world, like Russiaʻs forest and Hawaiʻi's native forests.

Colonization and imperialism both introduced the idea of dominance. A problem that has been shown multiple times throughout history and can be seen in modern-day society is racism. Colonization and imperialism play a part in racism because the idea of dominance made them feel more powerful and controlling over certain groups of people. A solution to this that is being shown in the present day is peaceful protesting and people standing up for what they believe in. However, racism isn’t the only thing colonization and imperialism have affected.
Other issues colonization and imperialism contributed to were agriculture and deforestation, which is what our Kahiau Research Project is about. A local example is the sugar cane fields. When mainlanders colonized Hawai’i, they asserted dominance and made others do work in sugar cane fields for their own benefit. This new style of agriculture (to Hawai’i) required lots of open space for the fields. This led to certain areas of vegetation to be wiped out.

"Connections to World War"
What developments of World War I in scientific, modern warfare tactics, and the results of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse your Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study? (share which goal that is)
During World War I, scientific, modern warfare tactics were being developed. Tanks, automated machines, trench warfare, submarines, chemical warfare are the most notable. Our UN Developmental Goal focuses on deforestation. These new tactics result in deforestation because the factories where these technologies were innovated needed to be created. These required space and trees need to be cut down for this to happen. If building more factories over natural spaces wasn’t bad enough, the weapons create more destruction and ruin the landscape. This kills trees and making it impossible for them to grow back. Even the war tactics such as trenches ruin the landscape and they use natural resources like trees near the area to build them. After they’re done, they leave them there after the battle is done. We know they leave them there because we still see trenches today as historical sites to visit. Overall, human developments may be good our goals like winning a war but they are not good for the environment.

World War I and the Treaty of Versailles were influenced by the advantage of science and weaponry. Automatic weapons like machine guns, flamethrowers, etc. were put to big use in World War I, they were able to shoot 600 rounds in 60 seconds. After WWI, scientific advancements were made in both accuracy and production in weapons. This caused future wars to be more advanced, more productive, and more cruel in killing people. Now, technology has advanced and is a necessity. Weapons are designed to easily disguise as normal items. For example, a taser that looks like a phone can be purchased online for anyone. Rubber bullets and tear gas are weapons that are used by police to hurt peaceful protestors that are advocating for black lives matter. Although, rubber bullets just sound like a childrens toy, it can seriously someone if it isn’t shot from a distance. The police force are supposed to shoot rubber bullets in cases of emergency and from a far, but instead they are using it against peaceful protestors that are standing in front of them.

"Between WW1 & WW2 & The Great Depression"
What developments of World War & the resulting Great Depression in scientific, modern warfare tactics, economic and political impacts of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse your Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
Many current issues have stemmed from past affairs in the 20th century. World War 1 and 2, the great depression, modern warfare tactics, and the Treaty of Versailles has had multiple and significant contributions to impacting aspects of the world. The economical aspect, the social aspect. Even the environment has been affected and you could even say damaged. Specifically, forests and trees have fallen victim to the outcomes of the 20th century. Deforestation is defined to be the permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides forests. This is the topic for the Kahiau Project of the Moananuiākea group. Imperialization, industrialization, globalization, and European influence were only some of the especially prominent ideas in the 20th century. These were also the ideas that practically required forests to be cut down all for personal and industrial reasons. And as these ideas grow, so does the demand for deforestation. Our forest will wither away, and evidently impact our economy, society viewpoint, and most importantly the well being of our Earth.

The events of World War, the Great Depression, and the political shift in the Treaty of Versailles have affected many places around the world forever. Since it is a part of our history, the events will always be remembered and seen in society. One example of this is the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawai’i. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Hawai’i because it was claimed by America. Because America claimed Hawai’i as its own territory (illegally), it forever impacted Hawai’i and its people. This means that the native Hawaiians will never get their rightful land back from the United States.
Another example of how WW2 and the Treaty of Versailles connect to a modern issue is how Germany and Japan got revenge. They chose hostile ways of killing and torturing hostages. The things they did were inhumane and sick. They singled out certain groups of people based on religion, skin color, and gender. This can be connected to issues today regarding discrimination, such as the Black Lives Matter movement. Our Kahiau Project issue also connects to the years in between WW1 and WW2. After the first World War, there was a lot of damage. They had to rebuild the lost resources, which included food and agriculture. This caused deforestation because they wiped out vegetation areas to create space for crops and sources of food.

"WW2, The Great Depression & Atrocities of Imperialism & Nuclear Warfare"
What developments of World War 2 & Nuclear Warfare discoveries in scientific, modern warfare tactics, economic and political impacts of America as the new dominant Empire work together to make worse your Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
World War 2, the great depression, modern warfare tactics, and the Treaty of Versailles has had multiple and significant contributions to impacting economic and geographic aspects of the world. The environment was severely damaged by nuclear warfare. Specifically, forests and trees have fallen victim to the outcomes of the 20th century. Deforestation is the topic for the Kahiau Project of the Moananuiākea group. For example, the atomic bomb in Hiroshima destroyed about 13 square kilometers of land. America becoming a dominant empire caused our sovereign nation to become the 50th state. America used their power to take away our culture and influence new ideas which leads us to where Hawai’i stands now. With around 1 million tourists coming to our islands every year, our land has become polluted. New attractions, hotels, houses, etc. are built every year, destroying our trees. Our forest will wither away, and evidently impact our economy, society viewpoint, and most importantly the well being of our Earth.

What are some connections that we see today that relate to the events of World War 2 and ongoing threats of safety to imperialism as backed by the threat of possible WW3 & Nuclear War (what does it look like, where can we see examples, what are some current solutions being tried)? World War 2, a pending World War 3, and Nuclear Warfare have made an impact on our future in a negative way. Although the winner gains a victory in war, everyone loses. During war we lose people, resources, money, and the land. One example of how these events can be seen today is political wars. As shown in the Cold War, there was a conflict on religion (democracy vs. communism). This can be seen today between many countries and even within our own U.S. government (democrats vs. republicans). However, politics wasnʻt the only thing affected by these events.
Nuclear warfare started to be used at the end of World War 2. An atomic bomb called Little Boy was used on Hiroshima and another bomb called the Fat Man Bomb was used on Nagasaki. Japan then surrendered and World War 2 came to an end. Even though the war was over, the bombings didnʻt stop. Just like the years between WW1 and WW2, the government/military wanted to advance weaponry and technology. The U.S. decided to practice using nuclear bombs on Pacific islands such as the Marshall Islands and Bikini Atoll where people were living. These bombings have affected future generations permanently. This affects us as Hawaiians because we are also Pacific islanders and although were werenʻt bombed on, the U.S. government has taken advantage of us which is illegal and harmful to our native culture.

"Impacts of The Cold War"
What developments of the Cold War and how America handled foreign policy with Cuba, Korea, and Vietnam connect with political impacts of America as the new dominant Empire work together to make worse your Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
The developments in the Cold War worsened the Kahiau Project’s issue of deforestation through nuclear wars. We can also see how America handled foreign policy with Cuba, Korea, and Vietnam affected deforestation because they aren’t working together to solve deforestation. The first issue against deforestation is nuclear wars. Both the US and Russia were armed in nuclear missiles and ready to fire at the other. However, we have seen the devastation caused by nuclear weapons. They ruin environments and can destroy everything above the ground. In the Pacific, entire islands were wiped of anything and left as barren mounds of earth. This means trees will be wiped out and gone. Although a nuclear war didn’t happen, we were very close during the Cold War on many occasions as seen in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The second issue is that America had conflicts in Cuba, Korea, and Vietnam during the Cold War. There were wars and tension in these areas meaning that countries involved weren’t working together to solve deforestation. Deforestation is a worldwide problem and countries around the world need to work together collectively to solve this problem. If countries are fighting with each other, nothing is going to get done to help.

After the Free Market Capitalism, America became one of the most richest and dominant countries in the world. Their power over other nations caused Hawai’i to fall victim to their colonization. They were much more advanced than Hawai’i and used that to force Queen Liliʻuokalani to give up her kingdom. I don’t agree with what America did to us in the past, and as a kānaka, I know we still haven’t gained the recognition we deserve. The Hawaiian culture is dying and America is to blame. America is very powerful and is a huge threat to other nations. Yemen is going through one of the worst humanitarian crises ever and America provided bombs and airstrikes to attack Yemen. Their cities and forests are destroyed. We can see all poverty issues being shown in Yemen. With the political and economical status COVID-19 has put everyone through, new conflicts can be made leading to a potential WW3.

"Empirical Globalization in the 21st Century"
From what we know about the developments of the Global Empires in History and how it impacts our current society in the 21st Century, how does it impact your Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal your group chose to study?
The United States is the world’s newest empire. Americans colonize and expand for their own geographical and economic benefits. Native and indigenous people have and are still affected to this day. Their culture and everyday lifestyle were completely changed by Western influence. They are controlled by Americans. Americans and Europeans both control the things people need to live and function in society. Ever since the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, our population increased and a need for houses, buildings, job areas, etc. increased as well. In order for these facilities to be built, trees needed to be cut down and deforestation is still effecting our Hawaiian islands to this day. Also, the occupation of America caused our culture to die down. We heavily rely on western society now.

How do we prepare our Lāhui and the future generations of people of color to contend with the ongoing issues of Global Empires and their impacts on our global society? (what does it look like, where can we see examples, what are some current solutions being tried). Give examples in modern society across the globe? and give more specific examples of what this revolution issue looks like, here in Hawaii where you live?
The next generations are the ones who will protect and preserve our world when we are gone. It is absolutely crucial that we prepare them to run this world with the right mindset, and the right character. At this moment in time, one of things the existing generations are fighting for is equality among all people, no matter their identity. We hope the next generations learn from us that everyone is equal and everyone should be treated equally. We also wanʻt them to be selfless, not only regarding people but also regarding the land. Most importantly we want them to be peaceful and non-violent. You donʻt want to be a threat, you wanʻt to be a revolutionary. We see examples of these in the past and today. The Civil Rights movement, the Gay Rights movement. The continuation of the civil rights movement, which is the Black Lives Matter movement, and the Aloha ʻĀina movement are all revolutions that have influenced this empire of America for the better. These are the kinds of examples that we should show our keiki. Itʻs the kind of standard we should hold them to so that they can start revolutions of their own.
