How does Colonization set up or impact your Kahiau Project topic as we see it globally throughout our study of history? Does this help or hurt our modern efforts to meet these challenges? Explain how or why?
Colonization impacts my kahiau project because it is the reason why there is a massive amount of Homelessnes in Hawaii. Before Hawaii Was colonized by America There were little to no homeless people because all of the land was distributed by the chief. You and your family could only live on one piece of land your entire life. When America Colonized Hawaii all of the Hawaian values, rules, and laws about land were thrown out the window. The Americans Taxed the Hawaiians until they couldn't afford their land forcing them to sell their property for very cheap. This caused many hawaiians to lose everything and have nowhere to go. This does not help modern efforts to meet these challenges because now the property in Hawaii is so expensive that the people can't afford to live in Hawaii forcing them to be homeless or leave the island. Modern efforts are not good enough for the Hawaiian people. How did/does Imperialism change our understanding of these things in History through the lens of our cultural history of language, culture, and activism in the community? Does it help us or deter us from navigating for a solution to these problems here in Hawaiʻi? Explain why. Imperialism changes our understanding of these things in History through the lens of our cultural history of language, culture, and activism in the community by showing us it's a bad thing. I'm sure people who don't know the harm of imperialism, but think of it as a good thing have never seen or experienced the effects of it. For example, I'm sure a person from Texas sees the imperialism of Hawaii as something that is good for the Hawaiian people. That person has never experienced imperialism so he doesn't know the effects of it. Imperialism caused the Hawaiian people to lose so much of their language, culture and other stuff. Imperialism kind of deters us from finding a solution because of all the damage it has started. The industrial age and many revolutions like the French Revolution happen because of new technological advances. These new inventions cause me problems for example when cars were being used it caused a lot of fights for oil. Another reason why these events happened is because of the constant sharing and creation of ideas. These ideas advance as time goes bye. They can cause the downfall of a country. That is what happened in the french revolution. The people developed an idea that they were fed up with the royals and took matters into their own hands. Us knowing these events can help us navigate for a solution of these problems here in Hawaiʻi by allowing us to learn from their mistakes and help allow us to improve on them. For example we can use the stuff we learned from the french revolution to help us with our rock your world project by not being controlling or ignorant when we help others. We can also learn that we need to be able to handle a job before we take it, unlike King Lousi. https://www.slideshare.net/CharlesGYF/cat007-perfect-your-pitch One thing that sparked my interest when reading the reviews is that the book can evoke an emotional response in oneself. People say that the book is so well written and emotional that it can affect a person's heart. For example, Katie 3 said “a novel whose heartache and hope stay with me long after”. After listening to Katie's comment it lit a spark of enjoyment inside of me. I am fond of novels or comics that can anger or fill me with enjoyment. Katie 11 said “Grace's writing is quite beautiful at times, and once the conflict with the developers gets going it brings a sense of terrible inevitability to the book.” I assume the ending is very emotional and not just a simple happy one. This also peaks my interest. Something that concerns me is that if the book excludes certain people from reading it. I don't want to constantly have to stop reading just to search up cultural terms or youtube explanations of certain scenes in the book. Tatianna Capko stated that “a very different book to me in terms of culture, doesn't mean it's bad, it was just unfamiliar to me.” I hope that I can personally relate to the book due to my Hawaiian background. I don't want to become uninterested while reading the emotional and heart touching writing of Grace because of the confusing vocabulary. I admire the fact that some people are becoming more educated while reading this story. Rachael C said that “ It brought me a perspective that I had never really acknowledged or known about before,” I want to become more educated on the Maori people and the struggles they go through. I can infer that the Maori are in a similar situation as the Hawaiians. The Maori want their land to not have a hotel and the Hawaiians don't want TMT to be on the mountain of Mauna kea. https://youtu.be/JytV4RpWmLg Kainoa: In my group, I had Lenox, Courtney, and jodi. Our slogan was malama lolo kakou me hoa. My experience was very interesting and fun. I am very thankful that I had a very hardworking group that pulled their weight. I didn't submit the project but Courtney did. The reason she submitted it was because she did all of the final edits. I just submitted my voice recording. I don't know why our project was not submitted. I guess it was too long or maybe a little dull. The second try I think I would have been more active in the editing process. I would have made our video more interesting.
