What are some examples of how Capitalism & corporate economics (Walmart/Walgreens/Target, etc) is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue? Having those industries affect our Un Issue by having mass productions in our state leading to more and more debri/trash which will eventually end up in our ocean. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to these issues that connect with poverty or other social challenges (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? I know a lot of people who are struggling with pre-poverty. My uncle and his wife were having trouble finding their own home due to the fact that their income was not enough. They had their way to find enough food and they made sure that their children were in stable homes but they couldnʻt find any jobs with a higher pay due to new machines. What, if anything, are you learning about how economic trends impact your Global issue and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? Economic trends affect our global issue because the corporate economies are bringing products that end up as waste that will eventually end up on our beaches, and rivers. https://youtu.be/9ChPtgflSOE
What are some examples of how IMPERIALIZATION / GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue? Some examples of colonization by it affecting our oceans is the molasses spill in Honolulu Harbor. This act created so much problems for the Harbors wildlife and people around it. Other things like plastics that come from colonization and globalization affect our native reef and fishes as well. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? All my family and friends are affected because the beach is where we could hang out but now most of what could have been the most beautiful beaches are filled with litter. What, if anything, are you learning about Imperialization/Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? Globalization affects our groups topic in a bad way because without America coming to Hawaii and bringing more and more useless items then our reefs/beaches would be in a great condition. https://youtu.be/xZ9bJwLi0L4
What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue? Colonization or Globalization is creating challenges on our island because when factories are shipping plastic products, the people on our island litter and pollute. With the heavy amount of plastic products on the ground and beaches, it pollutes our waters and oceans. This is a big problem because our reefs and animal life, such as our reefs and our Honu, are being killed from microplastics when they eat it. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? My personal connection to this colonization or globalization is since my father was always big on recycling, I have always thought how cruel it was seeing plastic and waste all over the place when you could just simply recycle it. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? I am learning about colonization or globalization by understanding that all these products are getting shipped to our island for us to pollute and litter it. Maybe there could be an alternative way to stop the use of plastic and use biodegradable products. https://youtu.be/WlWbq5DumZc
What are some examples of your research topic in your own island, community, state, nation There are many examples of waste on our beaches such as plastic, glass, debri, human waste, fish nets, and many more. Why was this topic chosen by the group: what is a personal connection to the issue or just because you have to do something :) If a personal connection (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? This topic was chosen by the group because we all like to get involved in the ocean. We donʻt like when we see trash on the beach, so we that idea came up. It is both a personal connection and a action that has to be done. I personally donʻt like seeing marine life get caught up in the trash because they have done nothing wrong. It is just simply the human beings not being smart with their trash that endangers the lives of marine life. How can this topic change or improve the Hawaii we live in? For who? Does this audience connect with you in any way? If so, how & why.. do you have personal friends of family members that are or possibly could be in this audience? This topic could improve and change the Hawaiʻi we live in by a lot. This change would be for both the past and future generations . For the past to once their beautiful Hawaii again and for the future generation to grow up in a non-polluted and pretty environment. My family, friends, and I always go to the beach, we usually always do something about litter when we see it on the beach. My dad especially cleans up the beach deeply by himself to take care of the land that took care of him. What do you think of your ability to make an impact in the community & possibly make a difference in this issue? Why would that be important? What kinds of lessons do you think you will learn from this Kahiau experience? By cleaning up some beaches it would make a big difference in our local community beaches. Itʻs important because the rubbish that lay on the beach is not appealing and our local fishes and reefs are affected. This Kahiau experience will make me learn many things. During this break I came to a conclusion to help clean up Anahola beach by myself in the morning by picking up trash and organizing the sticks on the floor. I attempted to contact Surfrider foundation to help clean other beaches that needed cleaning such as Kalihiwai and Anahola. Due to busy schedules they werenʻt able to have any openings during the certain days of the week that I was free. I would usually pick up trash in the morning so I could surf after. My winter break consisted of surfing and eating at home everyday. I tried my best to always pick up the trash. Trying to contact and make an appointment work with the Surf Foundation took up a lot of my time during winter break. Wha I could improve to not make he same mistake is to plan more ahead of time.
