With this Kahiau project, I learned that there are many ways to impact the world and it only starts with people who care. People who care about other things besides themselves are the ones to change the world for the better. From the beginning of the project I hoped that when we went to clean the beaches, that there would be people there at the beach. At the time of our beach clean-up, there was a baseball game that was happening. It was a good thing that there were people at the beach and hopefully we inspired them to make a difference too. I feel that the long term plan was effective because we got the dates for when we would do these events. The planning of it worked, but the challenge was finding time where we could all meet at once. This project was a great way of seeing how easy it can be to make the world a better place. Something small can lead to a big impact.

The purpose of our project is to bring awareness to people in the community about the value of cleaning our environment. Our plan was to go to the beaches in our community and also pick up trash wherever we see. Being a global citizen means that you out and beyond to help those in the world. They are people who care to make a difference. With this project we hope to start small by leading by example and encourage people to keep the environment clean.
From the last time we heard from our sponsors, they said that we can do things on our own. They told us great advice as to "starting in your own backyard". They told us that we can start at home and at school to make a difference. We plan to clean up around school and to schedule a time to go to the beach soon. Right now, we plan to find another sponsor to kind of help us with our beach clean up. But for now, me and my group members plan to do the best we can on cleaning up at school and at home.
We had emailed them back, giving the beach clean-up locations and times. They replied and said that doing a school clean up would be great as well. They also gave us a new email and sponsor to contact. They said that they can probably help us organize the events that we wanted. They gave us the email for "Love Your Coast". We plan to contact them and hopefully get a response soon.
We got an email back from our ideal sponsor "Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi". It was mentioned that clean beaches start at home or even at school. When we pick up after ourselves, then it makes the ʻāina more sustainable. Picking up trash and cleaning where we live is an important part of keeping the places we love (like the beach) clean.
We are waiting on a response from our organization, Sustainable coast lines. We hope to get their response soon so we can start with our beach clean ups.
Over winter break, our group thought of dates that would work for all of us. We chose dates on the weekend or three day weekends. Over the break I also did more research on my topic, reading more from the organization that we hope will help us fulfill our goals for our project.

AuthorMy name is Kaylee-Brooke Manuel and I attend Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus. I was born and raised in Nanakuli on the island of O'ahu. Why is this project important?
I donʻt want to see something I love be ruined by debris. Every Sundays, my cousins and I would go to the beach till sunset. We would also go camping in the summers at Nānākuli beach park, swimming all day making memories with my family. The beach is a big part of my life and I wouldn't want to see it filled with waste.
