This Kahiau project has helped me to understand the concept of being an Action Researcher and global citizen because I had to look outside of myself and find ways to help the world, especially my community. In the work that I did Iʻve seen that the more I search for ways to help I am able to serve so many people, even if I am only one person. In my project Through the research process I saw the perspective of Hawaii Food Bank and how they view the people of Hawaii as their family I feel that most charities view the people they help as “family” but I never really knew that this is what they thought. I think it’s a really important position to hold as Hawaiʻis food bank and distributor for the needy and how they view those in need as family rather than strangers. Another perspective I learned were the perspectives of my other group members and how they viewed the work we were doing for others and their determination to help out. I often don’t see the perspectives of my classmates and how they view global citizenship and are trying to make a difference.
In this project, was expecting to just receive and gather cans whenever I could but I found that it would be better to ask people rather than just wait for them to come to me. I figured out that I have to be the one to go out of my comfort zone to ask for donations to help out in my community. I found that I got more when I asked and gathered rather than just telling people and waiting for them to just bring it to me. An effective long term plan for action is very important when doing a service project because in order for our goals to be met and getting enough work done to make a difference we needed to plan what to do and when. For our group it worked to set a deadline for when we should have the cans and then go out when we were free during that time to ask and gather cans. I think I couldʻve done a better job if I asked more people but I think that by going in our own communities to gather cans we are really making a difference. We started as just three members but by going into our own communities we had a bigger group of hands willing to help and provide.

How does this align with Global Citizenship? How does it affect you and your community in 2017?
Our project aligns with Global citizenship because we are looking to help those around us. Global citizenship is looking beyond yourself to make a difference and help others. Our project of donating cans is part of global citizenship because it will give aid to those who need food in our local communities and creates awareness for everyone to do the same. As each of our group members go through their own community to gather canned goods they are involving others in their own community to aid other people in all other communities. This affects me and my community because as people of one community come together to help other communities around us, we can make a difference in global citizenship. I feel like our project is also sharing a message of awareness to the people in our communities to give to those who are in need. This year I feel that it affects us to help beyond our own community, but through our own community so that everyone is involved in this project to donate cans. This project influences others that we "CAN DO" things to help others, even through the simplest ways. We are continuing to collect cans and our due date for the cans is next week Friday, April 28, 2017. Because Hawaii Food Bank is only open while we are in school, we have planned to drop off the cans at nearby distributors for Hawaii Food Bank. Our choices for drop off are either NAPA Auto Parts or Ruby Tuesday. Our plan is to go to stores in our own communities. In Laʻie there is a NAPA Auto Parts in which I plan to drop off the cans that I receive. We extended the time for us to get cans because we figured we needed time to ask around. Our goal for our amount of cans is a total of 50 cans. I think that if I ask the people I am closest to they would be willing to donate. If all my family members donated at least two cans I think that the goal would be reached. I think that so far our project has been successful in the planning but we just need to put our plan into action.
We are continuing to look for people to ask for donations. I think that my family is willing so we can count on their contribution. Sierra and Makana have made their decisions to work with family and friends so I can too. Our project is to focus on the donations so whatever can be done will be done. We made a flyer to be handed out or posted along our communities. Preparation to advertise is still progressing. Overall our plan is in place to gather the products and meet together than take it to Hawaii Food Bank.
This week I am trying to figure out the dates for the project and also who I personally want to ask for help. I want to plan out who I will utilize in my project and who will be willing to donate so that when the time comes my project will go smoothly. Since we are doing it in out own communities, i plan on asking my family for donations because they all live around me. I also will ask people in my church who have large families that would be willing to spare a few cans for a good cause. As a group we planned from March 13-24 to put our plan into action.
For our project we are planning to collect cans in our own community. I live in Lāʻie so I am planning to place flyers down the streets. I am also planning on asking all my family and friends who live in my community for some support. I feel that in my community people will be open to the idea of giving cans. If every family donates at least one can, I can raise so much food for Hawaii Food Bank. My goal is to ask as many families as I can to help other families in need.
Our plan is to collect cans in our own communities. During spring break we are planning to ask our family members for cans. My idea is to alert my community about my plan so that I will receive more donations. I want to start small with personal connections then I plan on sharing a flyer throughout my community. This way I can advertise the project and more people can be involved.
This project allows us to help people who are not able to have the food we need. I feel that I am blessed with food at on my table everyday, so I want to be able to help those who are not given the opportunity to do so. This will make a huge impact in my community because people will know to help the Hawaii Food Bank, and other people who are in need.
