In my opinion, the three hot spots of the cold war were Vietnam, Korea, and Cuba; overall in these three places, traumatic events occurred all because of the push of anti-communism. In Vietnam there was a massive amount of deaths because at the time the United States was not under ethical leadership; the democratic filled congress chose to not live to the word of the United States and as result people died because of it. Now in Korea, the Korean war that was forgotten however in this case communism was trying to be spread by North Korea and China. In this war once again thousands of people died all because of the whole socialism, communism, capitalism reck. Now last but not least was Cuba who was affected by the development of this modern warfare from the United States who believed strictly in capitalism. Overall during the cold war, many were affected and it was all due to the rise of different ways of living.
Connecting back to my project none of the wars ever ended, World War I didn't and neither did the war to end all wars. The cold war brought about things such as poverty and some forms of living even pushed it more than others. Systems such as capitalism did set up the native people only because this way of living forces the people to leave their culture in order to make a living to support our family. These systems force kanaka to leave their native identity at the door and work in other professions. because nowadays we cannot survive just off of gardening and trading, we have to work in order to pay for our land and food. In my opinion the top three WW2 tech that assisted in the WW2 ending is nuclear bombing, the P51 Mustang and the N-1 grand rifle. For me nuclear bombs was the worst atrocity that occurred during the war; the bombs killed thousands in Japan and gave them a potential risk for cancer for years to come. However the bombing also led to Japan surrendering to the United states after the development of this new technology. On the other hand according to the first video the P-51 Mustang gave other countries advantages which also again led to them being able to influence the end of the war. And lastly the N-1 grand rifle also led to the ending of the war; this was because of the efficiency of the gun which allowed a certain country to become at a vantage point. But overall the nuclear warfare developed although deadly led to the ending of the war.
My Kahiau Project mainly revolves around poverty; however, connecting to ethical atrocities from world war II those that live in poverty can be related to those who are looked down to by countries. Poverty is in relation to the UN goal #8 which is decent work and economic growth. Those who were frowned upon were the ones who were taken into places such as Unit 731; these people probably were deprived of decent work and the economy in their country fell due to the amount of people from their country that were killed. In unit 731 prisoners or might I say test subjects were a direct subject in the development of modern warfare. Much like here in Hawaiʻi those who are living in poverty are overlooked at times and often face discrimination. During the war the need to create new energies and new resources were held to a much higher standard than any ounce of humanity. Overall it relates to my project because in place such as Unit 731 there is a need for ethical leadership because of the lack of regard given to these people. These events prove that the U.S have bad leadership actions; looking deeper into it the Hawaiʻi government system. Not enough action is being taken for the covid-19 pandemic and someone needs to step up to lead this state in the right direction. [WatchMojo.com]. (2018, April 10). World War II: Nuclear Bombings of Japan [Video].YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5OI9xrJ8Zw&feature=youtu.be Throughout the events in both Gandhi and the rabbit-proof fence, we see a constant need of the British to have power. In both of these scenarios, the British are belittling the native people of the land and end up trying to “normalize” the natives. For example in the movie the native girls at Moore river were forced to speak English rather than their own native tongue; they were also not allowed to practice their own culture they had to pray and that was final. And because of this, overall native people, in general, have been faced with discrimination in their land.
I feel like both the British Mindset and Modern American mindset have one big similarity the need for power. Both of these mindsets believe that their way is the right way; they believe that by using their methods of expanding power new resources will come their way and nothing could stop them. For example, the British Mindset back then revolved not around communism but instead a system of which the white man should be in control. On the other hand, Modern American want to establish the fact once again that the white man is all-powerful and that lesser ethnicities such as the Mexicans do not belong, The technological advancements used in World War 2, which was not even supposed to happen after the great war, worsened are situation in Hawaiʻi. Because of the new technologies, a bomb was launched on the beautiful island of Oʻahu. By doing this a traumatic experience flowed over all of the islands. This was a shock to the native identity, safety, and security of the people of this island. Overall the technological advancements made that was displayed through the pearl harbor bombing have been a tragedy that was remembered throughout the entire island. To the leaders, I would want to tell them on the behalf of the lāhui that they should take into account that putting the blame on someone will only make things worse. When you put the blame on someone or one country retaliation is most likely to come around. This war was meant to end all of the wars forever; however, instead of making things fair not taking everyoneʻs feelings into account before making any drastic decisions. No one person/country should be left out of making a decision that will affect them. Citation: Attenborough, R. (1982). Gandhi [Film]. Noyce, P. (2002). Rabbit-Proof Fence [Film]. I feel as though the Treaty of Versailles was the most important political document of the 20th century because after this treaty a multitude of events occurred. Places such as Germany and Italy were left with a poor economy. Living in a poor economy can lessen the morale of a country which could lead to the uprising of fascist leaders. One example of this was Hitler; he ruled over in a dictatorship only because of the poor economy in Germany that left everyone in a seemingly state of depression. Hitler made an extreme impact on the world in a terrible matter; he tricked other countries and even imprisoned the jews just because the Jewishʻs economy was skyrocketing. The Jews were faced with new energies, new technologies and new resources which made the Germans jealous.
The Treaty of Versailles that arose after the war to end all wars set up the world for World War 2 due to the weak economy that left some countries in a crisis. With a weakened economy fascist leaders were able to rule over and they had the fight to bring justice back to their own country. Leaders were able to rise and conquer; however, places such as the Pacific and hawaiʻi were impacted horribly because of this treaty. This treaty meant that these small pacific islands were up for grabs and the bigger countries could claim it; which in the end left Hawaiʻi in a cultural shock as well as a time of lost Native identity because of the transfer of powers to the United States.. In the sense of hawaiʻi we were claimed by the United States; which in the end dragged us into World War 2. Works Cited: Akana, M. (2020). Interwar Years. Presentation, Kamehameha Schools. The world did not learn from the war to end all wars; it instead lead to the rise of modern warfare. This new idea of modern warfare brought new resources to the table. People were developing more ways to kill their enemies. Aside from this the war lead to the death of many people and the transfer of diseases. However aside from this The Great War impacts our kahiau project as a result of the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty placed the blame all on Russia and since then the economy there has never been the same. This treaty leads to the discriminating acts done by other countries to Russia; Russia was cut off from things like trade. Although the economy in the city has become stronger over the past years, life in the country is still filled with poverty.
I agree that the Malthusian Flux Theory appears today in our modern world. We see it especially today in Hawaiʻi with the overpopulation of this island many people live in poverty. Our native people are living on the streets causing a loss in pride of culture and just plain indecency. We are slowly gaining back our once lost our native identity. However, on the other hand, we do owe some of the credit to both imperialism and colonization which both lead to poverty in general. Works Cited: Akana, M. (2020). Retrieved 5 February 2020, from https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/how-strong-is-russia-now Overall I feel as though the enlightenment, industrial revolution, colonization, and imperialization worked together to create one major problem poverty. More specifically I will be looking at two components colonization and imperialization. If you really think about it with colonization and imperialization peopleʻs countries were being conquered and taken from them. Through these two things, a variety of factors can play into people living in poverty; for one if land is overturned it is not guaranteed that the local people will be given an equal wage to their racial superiors. Besides this, colonization and imperialization can lead to discrimination; if there is any form of discrimination in a workplace from someone in a high position that person is more likely to lose their job. Discrimination can be from things like race, religion language practically anything. Through these things language and culture could also be lost leaving people in complete shock. The two specific components of poverty are colonization and imperialization.
Here in Hawaiʻi we have grown and sunk a substantial amount due to colonization and imperalism. We have dealt with disrmination amongst our people. However, in order to truly deal with the problem of poverty, we need to gain our native identity back. We should not have to be afraid of discrimination in the workplace or even when walking through the streets. We need to begin to see ourselves as equals with the foreigners because although we as Hawaiians have been through the moon and back with our culture everyone is still human. Together we need to make an effort to influence others to choose decisions that are in the correct path; their decisions is what can revolutionize the face of Hawaiʻi. If people living in poverty can feel comfortable with who and what they are they will be more likely to call for help. We as Hawaiians need to take control of our land! The variety of examples that this class has provided me with has opened my eyes to what leaders looked like throughout history. Through projects like the leaders then and now I was able to look closely into two leaders who had different strategies to leadership. For Haunani Trask, she chose the loud, proud and infuriated route while Alexander the Great took the route of having a plan of action. Overall these two leaders have taught me that I need to have a plan of action but I also need to voice my opinion with confidence. However, despite these two leaders another leaderʻs quote has stuck out to me. This quote is by Baruch Spinoza and he exclaims, “The world would be happier if men had the same capacity to be silent that they have to speak”
One thing that has affected my personal motivation was the Kahiau project; although this project is for a grade this project has allowed me to focus in on the problems of our society. Rene Descartes enforces that “It is not enough to have a good mind, the main thing is to use it well”. To me this quote is reflected in my project because most people are capable of helping those who are having a rough patch. However, it’s their actions that truly prove what type of people they are. Overall my Kahiau project has pushed me to go forward and make a difference Citations: Descartes, R. (2001). Rene Descartes Quotes. The next organization we chose was the food bank; despite emailing them they did not respond and still have not responded to our email. After all of this we moved on to Lanakila pacific meals on wheels; however, this organization also had the difficulties that came along with it. We ended up having a problem with one of our applications, finding a chaperone and above it all they are not very quick in response to their emails. We ended up not completing the community service that we had planned to do over the break due to many setbacks. Despite these problems we are planning to start our community service soon. Although we havenʻt made it to the community service yet, I hope that when we do get the opportunity to go that we will have created even the smallest difference in the community. I feel like we would have been able to complete the service by the original deadline if we had emailed the organizations all at once. By doing this I feel like it wouldʻve prevented us from scrambling around to find community service. However, despite our downfalls, some problems laid out of our hands because of the delayed responses of the organizations. Overall I feel like once we are able to get everything in order our community service will be a memorable time for all of us. As we continue on in the project I believe my understanding of all of the UN issues will deepen. However, due to the fact that we have not done the community service yet, I have not been able to grow as much as I would have liked. To me I feel like I had excellent leadership skills, to begin with. Despite this, I feel like after completing the community service I will be able to deepen my leadership skills. I believe that at this organization I will be able to work with and observe those who take charge in their community to make it a better place. aloha united wayʻs society of young leaders. (2017).
