"Kahiau Project, Digital Learning via Distance & Student Lāhui Leadership"As a young kānaka, I have learned a great deal about the world and the wars that it has been through. I also learned a lot about how humans, in general, have affected the world in good ways and bad. I learned that there are two sides to everything and many different opinions about the historic events, and not everyone will agree with you. I found that as long as you stay true to your personal beliefs and educate yourself on the subject. You will grow and develop your spot in your community. I can see myself as a potential leader for Hawaiians and people of color in the future, as long as I expand my knowledge about my culture and politics. My world views have certainly expanded and changed throughout this course, leaving me with a better political standpoint and understanding of why and how the world works the way it does in modern-day society. "Empirical Globalization in the 21st Century"Our families can balance the Western/European resources and Native values by maybe incorporating our everyday routine with our Native values. Our everyday routines are full of western values and practices but rarely consist of Native values and traditions. For example, you could incorporate native values by using food that is grown on the island, starting a garden, and planting your own food. You could start doing an ʻoli while the sun rises and sets or practice some hula, mele, or ʻoli. You could even do something as simple as respecting your elders. These small gestures could help protect the future of our Lāhui by continuing the traditions of our kūpuna. We can ensure that our native people are valued in this modern world by telling our story to and educating people on our history and culture.
I can use my privilege of an education at Kamehameha Schools to ensure that Hawaiians are steadfast in the 21st century by prevailing Pauahi’s legacy and sticking up for Hawaiians and people of color. The rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has shed a light on the struggles of all people of color. Different cultures around the world are supporting each other by standing up for each other by protest and freedom of speech. The goal is for everyone to be treated with equality. We need to keep the traditions of our kūpuna and figure out where we stand as a people in the world. Kim, D. (2018, March 28). Youth Farm In Hawaii Is Growing Food And Leaders. Retrieved July 10, 2020, from http://www.honolulumagazine.com/Honolulu-Magazine/May-2016/Philanthropy-No-Panic-Go-Organic/ Hawaii is currently facing one of the worst homeless epidemics in the country this year, 2020. It is the highest rate of homelessness in the nation. This crisis has a devastating social and economic impact on the state. It is estimated to have around 1,500 homeless individuals in the nation. The main reason for the issue is the high cost of living in Hawaii. The state government is taking many steps to find a solution to this issue.
The Geography Theme that best describes the issue is movement. Movement in geography means the movement of people around the world. I chose this theme to describe the homeless problem in Hawaii because the movement of people to Hawaii, is the reason for the high cost of living. Which correlates to why the number homeless is so high in the area. Hawaii is one of the most sought after places to live which causes attract more people to move and live in Hawaii. This act is driving out the native people of Hawaiʻi forcing them to resort to poverty and homelessness. A disproportionate amount of homeless is Native Hawaiian. That is why Geography is so important. If people are not educated about the area and the hardships of the community, they will only contribute to the problem. I was not surprised to learn about this issue because I a, already educated on it and it is a problem Hawaiʻi has been facing for years. This issue affects me because I am Native Hawaiian and it pains me to see my people living in poverty on our ancestor’s land. My community is affected by this because most people just come to Hawaii for the views. But choose to ignore our culture and the history behind it. They ignore our issues while using up our resources. Leaving Hawaiians with nothing. Forcing us to resort to poverty and homelessness. The World History theme that best connects to this article is power and authority. This connects to the problem of homelessness in Hawaii because of the impacts Hawaii’s government is trying to make on the homeless problem. They are trying to create cheaper housing, health care, make small communities, and start organizations to help with these projects. This is important because I think that it is about time the government does something to help these families to get out of poverty. Homeless In Hawaii: Facts and Resources. (n.d.). National protesters of The Black Lives Matter movement are seeking in end to systematic racism and discrimination in national economics. This discipline is primarily dominated by white men. The ability to provide a greater opportunity for women and non-white males in economics are creating an uprising of conflict throughout the country. Compared to the US the United Kingdom is highly developed in the social market and a market-orientated economy. But they lack equality for young people throughout their nation. Conditions for young people in the UK are bleak. Young people are more likely to be unemployed than all-age workers. This is causing an uproar of young people on social media, leading to conflict between them, and different age groups. From this research, I can tell that both nations have their flaws and are dealing with allegations of discrimination. I believe that both nations need to rethink their policies and management of the country.
The empire of America occupying Hawaiʻi has caused the issues of my Kahiau Project to increase in modern society. After the illegal occupation of Hawaii, Hawaiʻi took on a mass amount of Americans coming to Hawaii taking land, space, and establishing a government. The population and the number of people wanting to live in Hawaii caused the cost of housing to go up leaving many Hawaiians to poverty. Causing the number of homeless to go up. The sustainability of Hawaii went down as well because when Hawaii started trade with America, more products started coming to Hawaii causing people to stop producing their own food making them dependent on shipments from the US for food. This also regards the Mauna Kea movement because if Hawaii wasnʻt overthrown the US wouldnʻt be in charge allowing people to build on sacred land like Mauna Kea. Casselman, B., & Tankersley, J. One in eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia were directly impacted. Bhiamie Eckford-Williamson, an Euahlayi man and academic from the Australian National University, told the royal commission that 96,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including 35,000 children, were affected by the fires that burned in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia. That amounts to 29% of the Indigenous population in affected states, and 12% of the national Indigenous population. The Indigenous population in areas hit by bushfires was 4.6%, double the population in the state as a whole, meaning that Indigenous people were “disproportionately affected”. There was even a study saying that the geological record showed no records of a fire event equivalent to the 2019-20 season, with fires stretching from Queensland to Victoria.
The theme in geography that I think connects the most to this article is Human-Environmental interaction. They connect to each other because the article discusses how the wild bushfires in Australia have impacted and affected the Indigenous people. The wildfires affected Indigenous people because after the Indigenous people of Australia were colonized, they werenʻt able to properly take care of their land. They had taken care of their land by involving regular, controlled burns that reduce fuel load and decrease risk of bushfires. But after colonization they werenʻt able to continue. After the bushfires stopped in February of 2020, it was found that while global heating was undoubtedly increasing the fire risk, the landscape now had more fuel in the modern forested region today than when they were under Indigenous cultural burning. Geography is important with this because with geography we learn who the Indigenous people were, where they lived and how they took care of their land before colonization. My reaction to this article was that I was surprised. Before reading I did not know about culture burning or what it was done. But now I understand that it is to decrease the amount of fuel in the environment, which avoids bushfires. My opinion on this topic is that the Australian government should allow the Indigenous people to help to take care of the environment to decrease the amount of bushfires for the safety of their people since it is affecting them the most. Indigenous leaders are calling for a new workforce of 'fire practitioners' to implement traditional burning practices across Australia. This affects me because this just goes to show how oppressed native peoples are around the world. After these Indigenous got their land stolen from them, they weren't able to take care of it and it slowly went into ruins. Causing pollution and destruction of native and sacred land and practices. Something very similar had happened to Native Hawaiians. This article connects to the Geography theme of interactions with the environment. They connect to each other because the article talks about how the environment was affected by the bushfires and how they affected the Indigenous people and the people of Australia. The environment is mostly being affected by the ash from the fires. The ash is landing in school playgrounds, backyards, and is being washed up on Australia's beaches. It is eventually getting into freshwater stores and water catchments. This causes the drinking water catchments to get polluted because they are typically located in forested areas where they are vulnerable to a bushfire. This affects the people of Australia because the polluted water will infect the drinking water making it undrinkable and potentially harmful. This event is important to us today because it makes us realize what we need to fix to make sure that the same thing doesnʻt happen again. Wahlquist, C. (2020, June 18). This brought Hitler and Germany at a great disadvantage. After having to pay the exorbitant reparations, Germany had a lot of economic problems. These outcomes might have been different if Hitler had not been so discriminatory towards the Jewish people. If he was able to turn Germany against a whole group of people, he also could have led Germans to be better people who respected everyone's religious views and race.
The results of WWI and The Treaty of Versailles impacted the issue of my groups Kahiau project because my groups UN Development goals are sustainability and poverty/homelessness. In terms of environmental impact, World War I was most damaging to sustainability, because of landscape changes caused by trench warfare. Digging trenches caused trampling of grassland, crushing of plants and animals, and churning of soil. Erosion resulted from forest logging to expand the network of trenches. Another way my group's UN development goals were impacted was that after having to pay the exorbitant reparations, Germany had a lot of economic problems. This ended up leading to people losing their jobs which eventually led to poverty. Things only got worse after the great depression. It is also said to hinder economic development, it is not checked by disease, famine, or war. Many countries including China have taken matters into their own hands and made policies to control their population. This theory is contributing to the Black Lives Matter movement when there are some more extreme interpretations of the theory. For example, many racists might think that the US is “overpopulated” by the amount of people of color that are in the US. That causes conflict because they could be fighting the movement and killing people of color just because of the color of their skin. That is where the conflict majorly started. Black lives arenʻt being cared for and are being treated with injustice.
The Malthusian Flux Theory impacts my group's Kahiau project because my group's UN Development goal is sustainability and homelessness. If you look at it from a different perspective, sustainability could also work for wanting to preserve the amount of resources you use. This connects to the Malthusian Flux Theory because the theory basically means to worry that with over populations, there will not be enough resources. For example, the theory is shown when Britain sees the amount of resources Germany has and joins WW1 for that reason. Overall getting them involved in the World War. Colonization and Imperialism affect my groups' issues because a lot of factors that go into the World Wars starting are because of Colonization and Imperialism. This affects my groups goals because a lot of the reasons why these problems started were because of war. This also connects to Hawaii because Hawaii is greatly affected by these issues that my groups goals are trying to fix. Is the Malthusian theory still valid today? (n.d.). In the movie we see Gandhi leading a protest and telling the people around him not to resist arrest and keep protests peaceful. The same things are happening now in the Black Lives Matter protests. Protesters are being peaceful and police officers are trying to make them out to seem disruptive of the peace. They even try to make it look like coronavirus numbers are going up because of protests. But in reality protests are clean, safe and very cautious with their procedures. The people that arenʻt being safe are officers who arenʻt wearing masks and arenʻt practicing safe protocol. Another similarity that I found was that in both the movie and now people would go out of line and riot and lute but then people stopped and continued to protest peacefully. It has also come to my attention that the police in both instances are being violent and hurting the people protesting even though it is their constitutional right to protest.
An example of these connections and how Gandhi's approach is a model in today's society is when there are protests regarding Hawaiiʻs independence and protests against the telescope being built on Mauna Kea. In both of these instances the protests were peaceful and planned. I actually attended one of these and there was a huge turn out, hundreds of people filled the streets and the sky was filled and flags and signs. It was a really prideful moment for me and in that moment I was so proud to be Hawaiian. Mahatma Gandhi. (2019, September 04). My groups UN Development goals are homelessness and sustainability. From the presentation I found that colonials believed that power was determined by race. Meaning they thought that white people were genetically superior to the New Guinea natives. This is also seen now in my group's empire, the Netherlands. The Netherlands might be tolerant but racism still exists for people of color. Making it harder for them to find jobs. This is also a big cause for poverty and homelessness.
An example of the issue here in Hawaii is homelessness This connects to the issue of homelessness because in Hawaii most of the people who are homeless are Hawaiians. I believe this is because it is hardest for these people to find jobs that pay enough for them to be able to live comfortably because of how high the cost of living is here in Hawaii. My group chose the study of the goal of sustainability and decreasing the number of homeless people in our empire and Hawaii. The revolution of agriculture and science affects sustainability because after things evolved when it came to agriculture things started to be packaged and shipped so more waste was made and more energy was needed to fuel machinery and transportation, causing it to pollute the air. Revolution in agriculture and science also affected homelessness because when things were made more efficient, more jobs were replaced. Making it harder for people to find work, leaving them unemployed and running up the homeless rate. The enlightenment age greatly affected sustainability because during the enlightenment age because during this age more and more things were being traded and marketed needing more fuel and packaging which is not sustainable.
Examples of the issue of sustainability are oil, gas, and coal. All of these things are made up of fossil fuels. These fossil fuels pollute the air. The issue presents itself because everyone around the world uses these unsustainable sources for power, packaging and transportation. You can see examples of this issue when you look at gross sewers full of waste and oil gunk, plastic in the ocean, and trash on the ground. The three types of pollution are air and water. Air pollution is when things like gases pollute the air. Water pollution is when water is polluted with trash and waterborne diseases.
