The fall of Rome was due to various reasons, the most notable being the lack of money. Without a sufficient amount of money, the Empire known as Rome fell. Much like Rome, the U.S. is suffering from huge debt and lack of money. As of December 2018, the U.S. owes China a debt of $1.12 trillion, the U.S. is bound to fall only with the debt we owe China. As of June 19, 2018, the U.S. Senate voted to give the military $716 billion for 2019, approving one of the biggest defense budgets in modern American history despite concerns from some economists and lawmakers about the rapidly rising federal deficit. It seems as if we are overspending on our military forces, just as Rome. Another one of the main reasons why Rome fell was due to their overexpansion and military overspending. Rome also fell because of its government corruption and political instability. Many Americans today would argue that the government is corrupted and political spendings are far exceeding the ideal amount. Environmental And Public Health Problems lead to the fall of Rome. Many Rich Romans died of led from the led pipes they used for drinking water. Lead consumption can affect the heart, kidneys, and nerves. Since 2015 the state of Michigan has been suffering from polluted/unclean water. The state found dangerously high levels of led in the water, residents reported various cases where the water tasted different and smelt funny. According to Demandt, the Roman Empire’s fall was impacted by their racial discrimination. You could say that President Trump's actions to deport and separate families are very similar to the Roman Empires racist actions.

If Imperialization is: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force;
-->What are some examples of how Capitalism & corporate economics (Walmart/Walgreens/Target, etc) is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue? Businesses such as Walmart, Walgreens, and Target are all focused on the betterment of their businesses. With their minds set on their business, corporate businesses could care less about the repercussions their selfish actions have on the ocean. Some businesses dump their waste or dispose of it improperly for the simple-minded reason which is that it's cheaper. Their improperly disposed waste makes its way to the ocean and harms marine life as well as the ocean's overall condition and health. -->Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to these issues that connect with poverty or other social challenges (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? My uncle is homeless on my island, he is a personal connection I have. Capitalism by corporate businesses doesn't help much, they are mainly focused on their business and don't care about the homeless. He lives on the beach in Kilauea and fends for himself by hunting and fishing for food. While living at the beach he does his best to clean up the rubbish and repurpose it for his camp. -->What, if anything, are you learning about how economic trends impact your Global issue and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? Ocean pollution is worsening with the years that come. It has already become a huge problem as a result of corporate businesses selfish actions in the past and present. We already knew that ocean pollution was not a quick one time fix kind of issue. Through the impacts of economic trends, we can clearly see that we cannot easily clean the ocean and then expect it to stay clean forever. Our group now knows that ocean pollution is an issue that extends far past the product of a few thousand people forgetting to throw their trash away. We know that the economic trends greatly impact the condition and health of our ocean. We can learn to plan accordingly depending on the current condition of the economy. What are some examples of how IMPERIALIZATION / GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
One example had to deal with Japanese imperialization came costly events such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on Pearl Harbor and laid it to ruins. The impacts of the bombing were much more than human life loss and damage to military ships. It would lead to pollution in the water, and then to near uninhabitable water for aquatic life. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? Yes, I have family that passed away in the Pearl Harbor attack or Japan's imperialization attempt to colonize Hawaiʻi. I feel that if it weren't for Japan's act of imperialism then our home, Hawaiʻi or Hawaiʻi's ocean could possibly be a much better place. What, if anything, are you learning about Imperialization/Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? Now understanding that the impacts of imperialization and globalization lead to the condition our ocean is in, It only motivates me to want to reinstate the ocean into a once again good state. Knowing the oceans terrible condition is due to man's selfish and greedy actions just states that it's man's responsibility to fix our own mistakes. What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
Ocean pollution and the decline in marine life are a few examples of the challenges colonization has created. Colonist brought the plastic that to this day pollutes the ocean, they have changed the condition of the ocean forever. From the pollution that was a result of colonization led to the decline in marine life. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? Yes, ocean pollution affects me on a personal level. I was brought up in this world to always take care of the ocean and the marine life that inhabits it. Our ancestors knew the importance of having a healthy and sustainable ocean. We need the ocean to survive, coexistence between us and marine life is crucial to the future of the Hawaiian Islands and us as humans. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? Ocean pollution wasn't much of a threat in the far past, but with the years that came, so did foreigners and the product of their arrival was colonization. As colonization took place, the Hawaiian Islands were changing drastically. With colonizers came their idea that we aren't using the land "correctly." They would then use it "better" and in the process of their "better" use of land, they would pollute it. The pollution started by colonist is left for our generation to clean up, we have been left with the effect of their "better" use of land. Kauaʻi has many beaches that are covered in trash and pollution. We feel as members of the community we have the responsibility to restore the beach to the prime state it was once. As a child, my parents often told me not to go to certain beaches because it was too lepo (dirty). I want to have the opportunity to tell my children that they can go to any beach because it's clean and safe. Hawaiʻi suffers from ocean pollution drastically, if we were to reduce or eradicate ocean pollution completely then our home would most definitely improve and our children could swim in a safe and clean ocean. It doesn't personally connect to me or my family, I am doing this for the betterment of Hawaiʻi and its future generations. I think that with the cooperation of the non-profit organization 808 Cleanups it is very possible for me to make a difference in the community. 808 Cleanups has already accomplished a myriad of goals with the help of other community members. It is important that we make/ leave a better world for our children and the generations to come. I feel I could learn the real effects of ocean pollution when getting out into the community and working with my hands. I feel I could truly learn how to appreciate the ocean and all it does for us, with the Kahiau project I can see how we treat the ocean and how it should be treated if we want to have one in the future.
Over the winter break (December 20th - January 7th), I confirmed the dates that my group and I can possibly cooperate and participate with the 808 Cleanups non-profit organization. I reached out to each group member and organized the days throughout the coming months at which we can participate and assist the non-profit organization 808 Cleanups.
