Eugene V. Debs said, “I have no country to fight for: my country is the earth, and I am a citizen of the world.” In this, Debs describes global citizenship perfectly. To be a global citizen is to be member of not a specific community, state, culture, or nation, but to identify yourself as a member of the world. Therefore, thinking beyond yourself and instead, for the better of the community of this world. By doing the Kahiau project, I better understood what it meant to be a global citizen.
Being that I “hopped-into” this project later on into the semester, I wasn’t sure that this project would really impact me that much. But it sure did. Being that my role was research, I found it interesting that to euthanize dogs in dog shelters was the “best” solution to the overflowing numbers of dogs without families. We did this project because we were against euthanizing animals and to have them adopted is an even better solution! Of course we know not all dogs can be adopted, but euthanizing is not the answer either! At the actual event, hearing about the stories of the dogs that we worked with on our project day made me really sad for them and eager to help them start a new life. A pattern that I noticed was that dogs were more desired than cats, which makes sense since we see so many cats on the streets, and I wished that all of them could’ve gotten adopted, both cats and dogs! However, for two out of three of them got adopted was the greatest feeling in the world; it felt so good to provide happiness for something greater than myself. To be a global citizen means to be selfless, compassionate, hard working, and much more. I connect this to the work that Schindler, Gandhi, and Daoud and the goodness they must have felt after doing their even larger-scaled work. In this project, so many emotions filled me and I crave for more of it! It is very important to have a long term plan for action in order to more beneficially accomplish your purpose. What worked was our communication throughout the preparation for our event and our team work to get everything done. The only thing that could’ve been done better is if we planned more than just one adoption to take place! I hope to take part in another one in the future!

So this Sunday was the event and it went AWESOMELY! Our event location last minute changed to Petco in Ewa, which I think was a great advantage for us since more people were drawn in. I was so proud of us! It was fun being able to interact with the doggies (Coffee, Creme, and Tough Girl) as well as those who came in and out of the store, telling them our stories as well as theirs. I was also extremely happy for Coffee and Creme since they got adopted! I really wish I could've taken Tough Girl home myself! If you can't tell, I'm just really happy about how the event went, which you will see in our presentation next Monday! Gotta Blast!
Global citizens are people who label themselves as someone greater than themselves, but as a member of the world. This lines up to being a global citizen because we are beginning to create connections with other people to help those animals that are being euthanized/abused and hopefully those connections will help us reach out to the rest of the world. This project has an effect on me because since FOREVER I have had a strong love for animals and it brings me great joy to be able to help them out. I have two dogs of my own, one of which I had actually adopted, and it makes me happy to help their furry brothers and sisters. I think this also has an affect on my community because I'm sure that most are not even aware of what happens to these dogs, and as the research spokesman, I will make it a goal to inform those who attend our event, thus having an impact on them. I hope this will have a domino effect throughout the community. I can't believe that our event is already going to be this weekend! I'm so excited to see what happens!
Since the last time that I have blogged, I've been beginning my research about euthanizing. Something I learned is that 56% of dogs are euthanized in animal shelters, 15.8% of dogs are reunited with their owners, and 25% of dogs are adopted at animal shelters. (https://www.americanhumane.org/fact-sheet/animal-shelter-euthanasia-2/). After I finish gathering a decent amount of research, I'm going to work towards creating pamphlets about euthanizing and how to reduce the amount of euthanizing/increase the amount of adoptions that will be given out at our petdoption. After that, I will be making a poster with that information that will "tie up" an information booth that I will be running at the event. I plan on finishing my all of my research by this Friday, April 21.
In this project my role has now changed. Originally I was supposed to help with publicity. However, there's only so much that you can do in publicity. Shaylynne is already making a website that will provide information and help get word out. Teah is making posters and handling our social media account (instagram). So I decided that perhaps it'd be best if I contributed in another way. As a group we talked and decided that we want it to be more than just an event where dogs could possibly be adopted, we want people to know WHY they should adopt and want to inform them of our purpose. The reason why we chose to do this project was because we are against euthanizing (killing of animals through a drug), a method that is used at some animal shelters when animals don't get adopted. Our hope is that through this event, not only will dogs be adopted and given a new home, but we will be able to inform those who attend of euthanization. One day our group hopes to stop shelters from euthanizing, but for now we are going to try our best to simply save those dogs that could get euthanized (not from the shelter we are working with) by getting the word out. My new job is to research more about euthanizing and be the one who talks to people during the event about this problem in order to spread the word (as well as make very cute informational pamphlets).
This week I figured out how I am going to spread the word through social media. Once the post is made with information about the pet-doption (waiting on finalization), I will advertise through my own Instagram account saying to "repost, hashtag #kspetdoption, tag one of us, and follow @kspetdoption." @kspetdoption will be our official social media account. On this page we will advertise and send out information. Also, in order to encourage people to repost, hashtag, tag, and follow, we will be giving out a Starbucks or Jamba gift card to one to three random people who had followed the previous steps. Hopefully this will get the word around!
-Miranda Burigsay :) Being that I just joined this class and group last week made it rather difficult to make an ample amount of impact on this event, but there has been some progress I've made as an individual in regards to this project. Over this past week or so I have learned about the event that my group has begun planning, their purpose, and everyone's roles. Being that everyone had roles, it was difficult to find one myself. To be quite honest, for this last week or so, I've been the all around "wing woman"; I've been helping making decisions about venues and equipment, but it felt like just "busy work" with no purpose. THANKFULLY, it has now been determined that I will be helping with publicity by making posters (with Teah) to spread the word about our event to our school and the community as well as design posts about our event to be uploaded on social media when the date draws near. I will also be communicating with our VP to help us spread the word to our student body as well, that being when the time draws nearer. I am happy that I have found my role in this such amazing event and I can't wait to start making my mark on this project! I know it's been a slow start to my impact on this project, but I am sure that I will be giving my greatest effort to help this event turn out successful!
