Understanding Homelessness and Revolution
What is homelessness?
Applying revolutions
Invasion of the Bastille FortWhat exactly had the French Revolution been over? It was fought over the voices of the people. The government hadnʻt been listening to their people and neither did their Queen. For this they hung peopleʻs heads on pitchforks and rampaged down the streets trying to gain freedom from society. The American Revolution impacted the thought of the French Revolution. The thought of the people, a low class was able to stand up for themselves and go against the “higher power”.

The start of the French Revolution
There were many things that contributed to the start or the beginning of the French Revolution. Majority of it dealing with the government and the people themselves. Going from the 1st estate, then 2nd and of course the 3rd. The first estate was the clergy. The body of people ordained for religious activities. The second estate had been the noble and middle class in France. Then the third class were the poor. The “peasants” of that day. Though majority of the population of France had been peasants. With those classes, King Louis the XVI comes in and harshly taxes the people of France. In those days crops were difficult to grow, which leads to more debt for the people. As well as an economical dip for France. After King Louis comes in Queen Marie Antoinette. Who didnʻt understand that poverty was a reality. Therefore she did not understand nor comprehend how she would be able to help her people. Neither did she care whether she could or could not. This led to the anger of the people, especially those of lower class. Which then led to the French Revolution. APA Citations: French Revolution. (2019, November 25). Retrieved from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution. Do we see these signs of revolution now in modern America and Modern Hawaii? Yes, however these signs are not extremely obvious. In Modern Hawaii, there have been protests here and there but none violent enough to warrant a coming revolution. Hawaii is mostly a passive place, made up of mostly passive people. Most movements, again, are not as violent. It should be noted that whatever signs of revolution seem to show themselves in modern America, it follows up in Hawaii slowly. Modern America has had many protests that could be said to sign of a “coming” revolution, especially on the topic of Donald Trump’s impeachment. There have been been many protests about the man himself, and there are many protests about gun legislative laws (protests of such caliber being anti-Trump in general). It is also said that modern America is suffering from economic inequality as it is said that people work more for much less pay. The more Americans who come to grasp these concepts, the more likely it is that America will have an uprising (a revolution) followed by modern Hawaii who depends on America economically and everything otherwise as a whole. Yes, there are signs of revolution for us both, but modern America’s signs of revolution are more apparent. Retrieved from http://theconversation.com/is-the-united-states-on-the-brink-of-a-revolution-123244. How can we be prepared to handle homelessness should a revolution occur and a Hawaiian Nation replace the current government in Hawaii and what are some solutions to have in place? Well, some solutions to have in place for the problem of homelessness would be, to help the homeless find jobs, serve them in various ways. In order to help homeless people find jobs, places to stay and help them get on their feet again, we need to make sure that they feel safe around us. We could start by maybe giving donations and such to them, talking to them, making sure that they know that people are trying to help them and that we could help them move to a shelter if they wanted to. We could start off with small things then slowly and gradually help them get back on their feet in the world. We can help them find a good job, clothes, maybe even a place to live, suggest some of the shelters on island and see if they want to do that. A key point would be to make sure that they are comfortable with us and that they are okay with us helping them. In the event of a revolution, we should be rational and make good political influences if it is a given that we are governed with a voice in political issues. Shelters could be built for the greater good/anything in general could be done in order to appease the reasons for why homeless people may come to riot/revolutionize. |
Revolutions and their effect on homelessness
The shift from the Agricultural Revolution to the Industrial Revolution helped to create homelessness starting from ancient U.K due to a higher up (and wealthier) economy because of the increased sources needed for producing consumer products of the agricultural and industrial revolution. These products require many forms of processing and fuels, and these resources can only be granted by exchanging currency. By increasing the caliber and merit of such sources, it would create a domino effect for a more expensive society, raising the prices of essentials such as food, water, etc, etc. Additionally, with the improvement of modern devices required for easier processing of consumer products, there would be a mass loss employment for the general population. By the general population, this refers to more so rural, countryside communities who thrive on maintaining farms by hand rather than machinery. With the industrial revolution, traditional means of agricultural work are not necessary anymore, thus meaning the loss of jobs for agricultural workers, and a loss of income. Thus, you can assume from there the transformation into becoming homeless by not being able to conform to society’s improvement (which then becomes poverty). This can be seen in today’s day and age and it is not an old concept.
There are two sides to the industrial age. One being positive and the other negative. While there are many disadvantages to the production of technology and industry globally, there are also those that believe it only benefits us as people. For instance, Rob Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, said, “Like most technologies, the overall benefit is positive, otherwise people would not adopt them”. As this is a mostly true statement. People also donʻt take into factor the amount of harm creating technology may bring us. Building homes and technology, eating up an even greater amount of our resources. There are also many machines and things that have been built to take away jobs from other people. Machines do the majority of the heavy lifting, and people are there mainly to keep watch and be sure everything runs smoothly. Not to mention the amount of money it takes a town to build something such as a rail. People going into debt and losing their homes to create a “better future”. Or so thatʻs what society tells us. Buildings may be rising and so is the pay, but the amount of jobs left are lessening. The amount of opportunities these people have are starting to drastically decrease.
All of these events impact our “challenge” in Hawaiʻi. Since so much has changed because of the shift of the Agricultural Revolution to the Agricultural Revolution, we have been dealing with dealing with homeless for a very long time. The shift of currency and employment opportunities in the last couple years, have affected so many families and people from being able to live a “happy” life in the islands. The real challenge is to find the way to successfully live in Hawaiʻi. It is difficult to find and keep a job that will provide for your family. In the present, it is even more difficult because people from the mainland, fly and then live here. There are less and less ways to provide for our families. Since we canʻt get homeless people a house, we should help them in any way that we can. We should show compassion since these people are going through their own ups and downs. It is difficult to get work when there is nowhere you can go to after and it is already difficult to do that when there is a home to go back to.

U.N Goals affected by homelessness
Globalization
Globalization is the expansion and growth of modern businesses all over the world and the concept of native people as the workforce impacted globalization for setting up our Kahiau Project topic. This is because it follows the idea of native people being subjected to things beyond their control and always being treated as lesser. Many homeless are actually of Hawaiian blood. In whatever jobs they may attempt to work, it is always the case that they will not be paid enough to make a living and that is how it is similar to the concept of “native people as the workforce” impacting globalization. These two (technically four) propelling factors continue to impact our group’s Kahiau project because there are always constant changes in the laws or rules that pertain to homeless people. There is a constant flow of rules and laws about where homeless people are allowed and not allowed, also including the fact that the current government on O’ahu wants to “get rid” of all homeless people. The cultural tradition change greatly affects some of the homeless people in Hawai’i. There are homeless people from a bunch of places in hawai’i, the culture traditions change from their either “home-land” or place that they are from. Hawai’i is seen to be very different from other places around the world. The religious change is one pf the any things that greatly impacts our Kahiau project because people that are homeless in Hawai’i are seen to be apart of many different religions, even though the islands have different religions and churches, it does not mean that the homeless will be able to attend their own church. With the many different religions in the world, Hawai’i would be one of the many places with more than just one religion. The language barrier is also another thing that greatly impacts our Kahiau project because some of the homeless that are here in the islands do not all talk the same language. Due to diversity in the islands, there is an unfortunate language barrier. These things impact modern Hawai’i because the problem of homelessness in Hawai’i is more than just what it is seen as on the surface. APA Citations: (n.d.). Possible causes for homelessness Many factors continue to impact homelessness today. There are many examples of this, and one in particular is the economy throughout the world. In Hawaii, this applies especially because of its very expensive economy which is not friendly to lower class people and especially not to those who are homeless. This can be applied to many situations, but given if a homeless person were to attempt to make enough money to make a living/or to rent out their own space, it would be very hard to pay for considering the high cost of living in Hawaii in the first place. What also has an impact on homelessness is the weather and climate of Hawaii. This applies to other islands beyond Oahu, such as Big Island. The eruptions of active volcanoes on big island contribute to homelessness. Lava and its fire can ruin a multitude of homes, causing many locals to go homeless. This also applies to extreme tropical storms that may destroy homes and leave families homeless. APA Citations: Staff, H. N. N. (2018, December 18). 46 in every 10,000 Hawaii residents are homeless. The economy and its impact on homelessness We see the impacts of exchanges in modern America and Modern Hawaii by, all of the factors that continue to affect the homeless. For example, the continuous rise of the price of living here. This makes it much easier to notice the impacts. We notice that modern Hawaii has a slowly growing population of homeless people. We donʻt see the statistics and population of homeless people in modern America. According to the 2018 Homeless Rate survey, Hawaiʻi has the 4th highest rate of homeless people, ranging at the .66%. We see these impacts by how many people we see on the streets of Hawaiʻi. We can be prepared to handle homelessness by providing a safe place for people, making the prices for living here, lower. As a Independent Hawaiian Nation, we can be prepared deal with the problem of homelessness, by lowering the prices of living in Hawaiʻi. The current government of Hawaiʻi is seen to be trying to take action about the problem of homelessness but the result is not seen due to having so many homeless. Some solutions or government positions to have in place in order to solve the problem of homelessness can be said as many things. Of course, an already known solution to the problem of homelessness is churches and homeless shelters. These combined provide the most essential things to homeless people, providing food and a place to sleep. Another solution is also housing for homeless, which is something sometimes built by the government. This also provides a shelter for homeless people. APA Citations: Housing the Homeless. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.lincolninst.edu/publications/articles/housing-homeless. Philosophers Two philosophers that greatly impact and relate to our Kahiau Project topic, homelessness, are Benjamin Franklin and Adam Smith. They are both free-thinking philosophers, and their ideas influenced the evolution of the industrial revolution and scientific revolution. Their ideas of enlightenment were generally positive and non-rebukative towards people of other cultures --- encouraging freedom of speech and freedom of religion. However, while their influence was positive and brought upon ideas for the greater good and for a greater revolution of humanity itself, their very discoveries had a possible negative impact on the topic of our Kahiau Project: homelessness. Adam Smith enlightened in the ideas economy. He was from Kirkcaldy in the United Kingdom. His theories connect to our project in a negative way, as many philosophers ordinarily did not apply their ideals to people of a lower class (to sum it up, most philosophers did not seem to provide any input on if they feel negatively or positively towards homelessness, or talked about any aspects relating to being homeless). On the topic of Adam Smith, as a key figure of the industrial revolution and also of the economic boom encouraging the exchange of goods and the concept of globalization, his economic ideas helped to further enlarge and boost the modernity of society. He had created the basic ideas and laws of economics, to which that era in itself was an era that provided leeway to homelessness. By further boosting the economy and ensuring its success with his ideas, in a way, Adam Smith had directly influenced the fate of homeless people. This also applies to Benjamin Franklin. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and discovered electricity which was a great asset to the Industrial Revolution. His theories also connect to our project in a negative way, although enlightenment ideas encouraged freedom of speech and religion. This could also easily applied to freedom of identity, or otherwise said as native identity, which in a way would support the rights of the native people. However, this is not specified. As mentioned earlier, his discovery of electricity is a major negative contribution to the homelessness of the industrial revolution. It can be assumed that many factories involved in the industrial revolution as well as many products were supported by the use of electricity, making his discovery directly part of the success of the industrial revolution. Overall, the industrial revolution was the revolution with the largest amount of homeless people due to the sudden modernity, and for a fast flowing business to succeed, this required thousands and thousands of native workers, thus losing their native identity and being controlled (and seen as lesser) for their less-than-successful development with their own "industrial revolution" in comparison to Europeans (white men in general). This follows the concept of the Whiteman's Burden, where Europeans looked down at natives and said that it was their right to conquer the world and improve the barbarians in it, regardless if they wanted it or not. Furthermore, being said that these natives were forced to work, they would not earn enough money to live in the first place --- as the need for jobs caused many to move to cities (which eventually became cramped). To summarize, Adam Smith and Benjamin Franklin's contributions to the age of the industrial revolution negatively impacted the outcome of homelessness and that is their connection to it. The industrial revolution began in the year 1750 and was impacted by the technology of the scientific revolution and the enlightenment theorists. How big was this era? Well before the year 1750, more than 80% of the worldʻs population was engaged in some sort of farming. Today less than 1% engage in farming. During this revolution, the amount of control people had over the land greatly increased. Geography was of great importance, the way people transferred goods globally had been affected. Modern warfare also played a large role in the effect of the way goods were imported to and from another country. The way people use energy and technology has affected humans through the globe enormously through the years. Wars were fought over oil. Technology was stolen through the years to bring us where we are today. From using gas to power our lamps to using electricity today. We donʻt normally think about these small things but when we really think about it, it greatly affects the world we live in today. Technology can be good or bad. Sometimes technology is used so much to the point where we donʻt need humans anymore. So people go without a job. Instead of the door being opened by a man dressed in uniform, there is an automatic system waiting to be used. Power plants take up a lot of space and energy. Stripping away the lands of native people and those who are in need of a place to stay. Power plants are used to bring power to everyone, but at the end of the day does it really only have a positive affect or something else? These things have lead to people finding it difficult to make ends meet, or find a job because they have been taken over by technology and their lands were stripped away by a large foreign company. Retrieved from https://inc42.com/datalab/the-uncanny-valley-how-artificial-intelligence-automation-have-eroded-human-interaction/ Trade and religion were two propelling factors that occurred during this era. Obviously trade deals with trade, but religion has an affect on whether countries were willing to exchange with other countries. Some countries were separated and segregated due to religion, and this has an effect on the countries exported and imported goods as well. As for expansion, in order for countries to be able to expand and grow. They must have allies, good geography, and resources. These factors were caused and impacted by many things such as, the amount of control leaders have of their land. As well as the safety and security of their people. And of course expansion and exchange was also impacted by the geography of the land as a whole. As for colonization, the amount of imported and exported goods contribute largely to many economies. This is for survival and based on the fact that many countries are dependant on other countries for goods. We import and export for money and to gain the things we need for our own survival and well-being. Knowing all of this history and how trade and religion has changed over the course of time really allows us to compare how things are today to how they had been previously. With this knowledge we are better able to understand why there are more Christians or catholics in Hawaiʻi, or why our “state” produces cash crops. Or crops that are used to make money rather than to help sustain our people. Over time, prices have risen and costs for everything has gone up. Many people are unable to keep up with the modern world we live in today. Therefore there is the issue of homelessness in our community. Since we are a cash crop “state”, our people are unable to feed themselves and rely on the ʻāina around us. At a certain point in time we were able to do so, but as of today we can not.
