Some signs of revolution now in modern America and modern Hawaiʻi can be seen, maybe not as big as the French, but through marches and protests throughout the nation. In modern America, there are marches for issues such as equal rights for women, race, LGBTQ+, etc. There is also an impeachment going on towards the current president, Donald Trump. In modern Hawaiʻi, there are marches being held and peaceful protests to fight for our culture and identity and our lands. On Mauna Kea, there are hundreds of Hawaiians peacefully fighting for our sacred land.

For a revolution, there are certain things that are essential to making it successful. What triggered France to start a revolution was a multiplying series of events that lead to the decline of political monarchies around the world. There was a time of war, a lot of political and social changes, and a lot of political uncertainty. All these happened and the public finally got fed up with it and revolted. 80% of the population of France was getting overly taxed and when they realized they didn’t have to take it anymore they revolted.

We as a nation are already doing whatever we can to address pollution. If a revolution started in Hawaii and a Hawaiian Nation replaced our current government I feel like we would have a good stance against pollution. By having this stance we would be able to start new, by starting fresh we would be able to relearn our values and how we have to take care of our home to keep it. There are already many Hawaiian movements that help stand up for pollution and with a Hawaiian government call the shots there would be even more chances to address this problem. As Hawaiians we are divided, but with a united front we would be able to make an actual difference in eradicating pollution in our home.

The shift for the Agricultural Revolution to the Industrial revolution played a pig part in how our problem came about. The agricultural revolution was a greener time for the entire world. But by farming what we eat and having a surplus our food supply we had a lot more time on our hands to invent and create new things. This launched us into the industrial revolution. By inventing and creating we made waste and polluted our homes without even knowing it. For example, the invention of the steamboat was one of the greatest inventions of the time, but it was also destroying ecosystems through both air and water pollution. (Nicole)

The ongoing flux of the Industrial age definitely still continue to impact our problem which is pollution. The Industrial age continues to impact our problem of pollution today by the increase of power-hungry people interested in economic development with the help of manual machines. These factories produced boundless amounts of pollution in the air, ocean and fresh streams. In the Industrial revolution companies used fossil fuels and coal to run their businesses. Poorly constructed machines created leakages of harmful substances into the air creating sickness for some. These chemicals that were released are what our current society is still trying to clean up. (Nanea)

Pollution in itself is a big issue globally, and ocean pollution affects all of us directly, especially Hawaiʻi. Due to the way the Pacific Ocean’s currents move, pollution from all over the world end up in our oceans and on our coastlines. This deeply affects our whole underwater ecosystem starting with the killing of coral reef, which is home to many marine life and feeding grounds for others. Ocean pollution such as plastic directly affects marine life by posing as food, only to be swallowed by fishes, turtles, sharks, sea birds, whales, and so much more eventually killing them. This pollution affects Hawaiians because we look to the ocean as a playground and a great food resource, but how will we do that if there are no more fish left and the waves are filled with trash, and the water is too acidic to even enter? Applying the Expansion Concepts to our Kahiau Project (42B)
Out of the 4 major concepts that set up the issue of pollution, Exchange caused us the most grief. With exchange and trade goods are shipped or taken to the other export by foot. Pollution was inflicted. The shipping boxes and 0ther goods were left causing more rubbish to collect. |
Exploration and exchanges are seen in modern America and Hawaii through the shipments of food and items that we get. Items are sent on barges to travel across the ocean to bring us things like the silk road did. We can also see how the network of traveling routes affected the idea of airplanes and flights.

If we were an Independent Hawaiian Nation I feel like pollution would be one of our biggest issues. As an independent nation a goal it to be self-sustainable, or at least able to take care of themselves, so pollution would be a problem worth addressing since it would be something we have to keep under control to be able to support our own people. As a people we would try to practice our Hawaiian culture of fishing and farming, which would be a lot more planet-friendly. I also feel like we would also be more conscious about what we put into the earth since that is one of our biggest values as Hawaiians. By taking care of the land the land will take care of us. Our current government is part of a much bigger production, so pollution is just one of the many problems that they are trying to fix. But so far our current government is making big changes to help deal with pollution. First of all, they voted to ban plastic items by the year 2021 this ban includes plastic utensils, plastic straws, etc.
|
Our state is placing laws that ban items that are harmful to the environment such as plastic bags and sunscreen that are dangerous to our reef and wildlife. I think the government should also place lids on trash cans out in parks or at the beach or make the cover so that even when the can is full, no trash can be blown out and onto the ground. I think this will positively help pollution because sometimes the problem isn’t that people are littering, but that the trash doesn’t stay in the trash can.

Triangulating Enlightenment, Industrialization, Colonization & Imperialism to The Issue of Pollution (47A)
The 2 philosophers that most greatly relate to our Kahiau project is Baruch Spinoza and Johann G. Fichte. These two philosophers were both professors in ethics and had a sustainable outlook on life. Baruch’s quote said, “The highest activity a human being can attain is learning for understanding because to understand is to be free.” I interpreted this quote to relate to our Kahiau project because like all problems we need to be able to understand it to be able to take care of it. So if we as humans take responsibility for what we are doing to our earth we could address it and find new solutions to it. Fichte had many theories on the government but had also had some on self-sustainability. His quote talked about how it is not that we are not capable of taking care of pollution, but we choosing not to address it. These theories are not exactly applying to our Kahiau project, but the thinking behind it is definitely still relevant to what we are trying to do.

The two biggest Industrial Revolution results that impacted Pollution was the steam engine and coal. Both of these inventions that were created in the Industrial revolution cause a great load of air pollution. Coal alone creates vast amounts of CO2 levels in our air and uses a plethora o four clean oxygen. Coal fueled this steam engine and caused a lot of damage to our clean air system. This new source of energy caused the air to be difficult;t to breathe for the workers and civilians. A lot of this change was influenced by other country’s new developments. This revolution was full of competition for the new and latest inventions. Leading to the normalization of pollution and littering in Hawaii.

The start of the Era of Expansion endured more labor and new land. The two factors were the discrimination of the native people/nationalism and Colonialism/Colonization. These factors came White men coming into native-owned land and forcibly taking away there home. Their idea that just by certain circumstances that they were inferior. This brought devastation to plenty of cultures around the world. This occurred in Hawaii as well. The white men came in and tricked the Hawaiian people into taking over their land. Respect for the land became nothing. The pollution of our land continues because of the disrespectful ways of foreigners.

As imperialism became more popular, so did colonization, and it also became a fight between nationalism and their identities and native identities. The native people have always had a deep love for their land and respected it and kept it clean and sustainable. When the colonizers took over they didn’t have the same interests and thoughts about the land as the native people did. This caused them to build, pollute, and ruin the land. This carries on in modern Hawaiʻi as developers continue to build unnecessary structures that pollute our native land, air, and water.
