From day 1 to 30 I would rate my improvement of quality work I produce in world history a 4 because at first the online learning was still a little new to me but as we progressed I feel I got better. From day 1 to 30 my improvement of digital application would be either a 4 or 5 because I had to learn how to use flipgrid which was challenging at first but got easier overtime. My improvement in independence and self organization improved from day 1 because not having a teacher forced me to learn and complete tasks on my own. I felt learning about current events and the locations of countries was very important because now when I see the news I know where these countries are. The Kahiau project was a good way to apply what weʻve learned and connect current events to ancient civilizations and governments.

In order to compete with European/Western sense of resources we need to maintain and promote our culture in the Hawaiian community. If we educate other Hawaiians about culture, land, and resources we could encourage the caretaking of our ʻĀina. If we donʻt do this we risk losing most of our cultural heritage. When Hawaii was colonized and adopted western ways we ended up losing most of our widespread cultural practices. For example kapa which used to be an art and a necessity but over time it became just an art that only a few cultural practitioners continued as it was replaced with western clothing. The privilege of being educated at Kamehameha Schools gives students the opportunity to learn both western and Hawaiian culture. We can use this to educate others about our culture, things that are being done to harm the land, and what we can do to preserve it. The education at Kamehameha schools provides the basis to be future leaders. Works Cited: HISTORY – La Hoihoi Ea. (2020). One example of this would be the annexation of Hawaii. In 1898 the U.S annexed Hawaii orders of President William McKinley. By doing this the United States gained profitable resources such as sugarcane and plantation lands. Hawaii was also a strategic location in the Pacific. Citizens in territories conquered by Rome would receive full citizenship and the same rights as a roman except the right to vote. Leadership would remain and they would continue to be self governing (PBS). On the other hand Hawaii was forced to give up its leadership but similar to Roman territories we were subject to the constitution of the United States same as any other U.S Citizen.
Due to Hawaiiʻs occupation by the United States we no longer have independent control over our own nation. We are subject to the laws of the United states. The annexation was finalized after the Spanish-American war and the U.S used Hawaii as a strategic Naval base. This affects our Kahiau Project issue because the oppression of Hawaiian people led to poverty. Works Cited: The Struggle For Hawaiian Sovereignty - Introduction. (2020). At the end of the first world war the Allied powers were victorious. The treaty of Versailles was created which put heavy reparations on Germany. If Germany was not forced to pay billions of dollars to european powers to pay civilian damage Hitler would not have been needed to “save Germany” because there wouldnʻt be as much disparity and poverty caused by war. The treaty of Versailles put complete blame on Germany and it forced them to pay Billions of dollars. The treaty also caused unemployment, poverty, and famine. This also caused the basis for a German uprising and the start of World War II with the bombing of pearl harbor throwing the US into war. The great depression also after World War I was possibly triggered by bad political decisions such as the imposition of congressional tariffs on European goods or by speculation that caused the Stock Market Collapse of 1929. The Malthusian flux theory is the idea that population growth is potentially exponential while the growth of the food supply or other resources is linear. So when the population grows there are fewer resources available. A shortage of resources is becoming more evident in the face of Covid-19. Causes include a shortage of farmers due to covid 19 safety concerns. This doesnʻt directly impact the black lives matter movement. It affects the country as a whole. Malthusian Flux theory, Colonization, Imperialism and World War contribute to our issue of poverty. Colonization and imperialism affects this issue because with it came disease which spread to native people in various regions. When Colonists arrived in North America they spread diseases such as smallpox, bubonic plague, chickenpox, cholera, the common cold, diphtheria, influenza, malaria, measles, scarlet fever, sexually transmitted diseases, typhoid, typhus, tuberculosis, and pertussis. Colonization also brought slaves to produce cash crops. Even though this happened around 400 years ago it continues to affect members of the black community till this day. Gandhi was a man of the bible. He did not condone or wish violence against his enemies and that “there is no god higher than truth.” In April 1930 Gandhi led the salt march which protested the British tax and control over Indiaʻs salt production. This was just one of many acts that led to the freedom of India. The Black Lives Matter movement in Hawaii has shown itself to be very peaceful while bringing to light some issues that plague people of color such as police brutality and redlining. Examples of some peaceful demonstrations include downtown Orlando where people are lying down in the streets to symbolize the final moments of George Flyodʻs life. Some other cases however include violent acts committed against other people such as smashing car windows, looting, and destroying businesses. Which in no way honoring the life of George Floyd or other wrongful black deaths.

For Example in Africa many of the settlers brought disease. Western settlers conquered these regions and established western style governments with firearms. The issue that we chose to study was poverty. In the middle east poverty affects 17% of the population which makes less than $2 per day. Causes of these issues include weak governments, poor infrastructure, and wars tearing through middle eastern countries, and communities. Current solutions include donation sites , increased employment, better education, and support systems. We see these being applied in countries such as Saudi Arabia which is now the largest oil exporter in the world bringing in more income, job opportunities, and investments in education.

Poverty is an issue that occurs all around the world. A large portion of poor people are farmers who depend on agriculture as a source of food and income. For most of these farmers markets are “...often distant, infrastructure is poorly developed and the degradation of natural resources is a serious problem.” (FAO 3). This issue is also common in other developing nations and regions. Almost 10% of the world's population is affected by poverty that is close to 1 billion people. With that “almost half the world (nearly 4 billion people) lives with a household income below $2.50 a day.” These issues are even prevalent among Hawaiiʻs homeless population.
