This project has helped to push me to develop my research skills and actually apply those skills to a community based problem. Through this project, I was able to be exposed to global citizenship and becoming a global citizen. Through the research process, I learned about the perspective of the homeless community and I gained a better understanding of their situation and what we can do to help.
In the beginning, I expected the process not be easy. I was honestly afraid at first of working with homeless people. After the project, I realized there wasn’t as much to worry about. Of course I still wanted to be cautious around some, but others just minded their own business. Some were sleeping, so they would wake up next to a bag of goods for them. A long term plan is very essential to a project like this. You need to know exactly what you’re going to do and exactly when you’re going to do it. Planning effectively means working efficiently.

So through the Kahiau Project, we students are learning about and are trying to become global citizens. Global citizens are people who are motivated and take action for the better of the world. They think of others and try to help their community in some sort of way. Our project to help the homeless is taking our group closer to becoming global citizens. Working for and with the homeless gives us a good understanding of other people's perspectives so we can work to help everybody's needs. This project helps us to think of others and not just ourselves. We can also draw out some global citizens by getting others to donate goods to people who need it more. Working with the homeless can be scary to some (and yes, at times things can get a little "risky"), but people need to realize that they are still people. They are a part of our community (especially in Hawai'i) and we should bring them together with the rest of the world.
That's all for now. Until Next Time, See Ya. It's been a while, so it's about time for another update on my progress. So since I last posted, I've been busy with gathering research and various statistics about homeless and how we can help them. I decided to make an analysis on the problem by finding the various causes for the problem. These "barriers" appear to be divided into three categories. These categories are knowledge (both factual and conceptual) causes, motivational causes, and organizational causes. I'll update you guys more about these categories as we go along with the project. In addition to the research, my group and I have been individually gathering goods to put in goodie bags. We originally started with the goal of collecting socks as a main item to put in the bags. I have been on the fence about this decision for a while, but I have now decided to expand our inventory to include shoes too. We would like to provide shoes for as many people as possible, but with added expenses, we can only afford to collect shoes for children for now.
That's all for now. Until Next Time, See Ya. Over this week, I did more research on what homeless people need. We need to make a specific list on what to either buy or request for donations from homerooms around our school. We are planning to add the most essential goods to each goodie bag. I am planning the amount of items in each bag and how many bags we will make based on homeless statistics.
That's all for now. Until Next Time, See Ya. So over the holiday season, I did more research about homeless people and what items would be most useful in goodiebags to them. These items include (but are not limited to) water bottles, socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, handwipes, applesauce, cereal bars, crackers, etc.
