-->What are some examples of how Capitalism & corporate economics (Walmart/Walgreens/Target, etc) is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
Big corporations creates challenges in the problem of poverty because they have almost a monopoly on that category of market making it harder for small businesses. Capitalism in general could make it a little more difficult as well because of how many other competitors there may be who are trying to do the same thing. -->Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to these issues that connect with poverty or other social challenges (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? I donʻt think I personally know anyone that is completely affected by poverty and canʻt get out of it, but a lot of my family members mostly fluctuate in and out of it and different points in time. I do see the kind of things that are resulted from poverty which can even further the problem worse than it may already be. -->What, if anything, are you learning about how economic trends impact your Global issue and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? My understanding of the impacts of economic trends have changed in the way that I see how big corporations can cause bigger problems for the economy than may be obvious.

What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
The example I would bring up for colonization in Hawaii is when Captain Cook landed in the islands and created many problems. Along with all the foreign people he brought along with him there were also many diseases which the Hawaiian people had no resistance to; killing many of them in a short period of time. Those who didnʻt die off from all the sickness being spread around was promptly forced out of their land to make room for more people coming. All of this happening caused many different problems for all the Hawaiian people; not only for that time but generations to come from then on. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? This is something for everyone to consider because it has affected not only our people but all kinds of different races across the world. I do see a personal connection to this because my ancestors were affected by the problem of colonization severely. I think we can all find a personal connection somehow to globalization because of how widespread it is and people always wanting to explore places they have never seen before which causes things to take place. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? The biggest thing I am learning from everything on colonization or globalization is that it is a problem that can have many consequences to the people it affects. Colonization may not be such a problem now but back in the times of world exploration it was very prominent and everyone affected by it usually didnʻt have any idea such thing would occur. What are some examples of your research topic in your own island, community, state, nation
Poverty, homelessness, hunger Why was this topic chosen by the group: what is a personal connection to the issue or just because you have to do something :) If a personal connection (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? The personal connection that I have with this issue is that I have many family members who occasionally go in and out of poverty and they need food to eat. I also see many people around where I live who are always looking for something to eat and just get overlooked all the time. How can this topic change or improve the Hawaii we live in? For who? Does this audience connect with you in any way? If so, how & why.. do you have personal friends of family members that are or possibly could be in this audience? Fixing this issue/topic can greatly improve the current Hawaiʻi for everyone because i'm sure it is a thing that everyone somehow has a connection to. Yes this audience connects with me because everyone on the islands are connected by the economy and we all have to support that. What do you think of your ability to make an impact in the community & possibly make a difference in this issue? Why would that be important? What kinds of lessons do you think you will learn from this Kahiau experience? The closest thing I have ever done in the past to giving back to the community and the people was doing beach cleanups. I feel I should be fairly adequate at making an impact during this project as it doesnʻt take that much effort to really make a difference. I think from this I will learn that all of us are the same and that sometimes others just need a hand to make it back up again. Our topic we are so compassionate about is poverty. There are global poverty causes that continue to help steep our world into darkness. According to https://www.concernusa.org/story/top-9-causes-global-poverty/ approximately 800 million people in the world live in extreme poverty, surviving off of $1.90 a day. There’s really no clear cut magic spell that will solve extreme poverty, but there are some solutions to make progress on it. A huge problem is inadequate access to clean water and nutritious food. Over 2 billion people in the world don’t have access to clean water at home, while like I stated before over 800 million people suffer from hunger. There is also little to no access to jobs for people. Of course, there is also inequality such as gender, caste systems, or tribal affiliations.
In local news, according to http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/33087891/census-1-in-6-hawaii-residents-live-in-poverty/ Every 1 in 6 residents are living in poverty. Hawaiʻi is ranked 9th on the highest poverty charts in the nation. A huge factor for poverty in Hawaiʻi is the high cost of living. An estimated guess states that 149,000 Hawaiʻi residents are living in poverty. Why this is such a conflict. Us, we take everything for granted. Our water, food, shelter, education, etc. When we look at things from 3rd world countries, we tend to think more and be more sympathetic because it is a harsh situation. But, what if we didn’t have to because poverty would be not such a problem if people decided to help out. People who host food drives or donate water and supplies can help a family in poverty out so much. |
