Sustainability & History
The Agricultural Revolution affected our “challenge” of sustainability by having an impact on the environment, and transforming forests and previously undisturbed land into agricultural land. They destroyed habitats which reduced biodiversity and released carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This affects our challenge of sustainability in the Agricultural Revolution, there started to be more sustainable and begin to farm. The Industrial Revolution affected our “challenge” by allowing commodities to be created on an unprecedented scale in human history. It increased the living standards and extended the economy of nations. The Industrial Revolution was important, but the Agricultural Revolution affected more of our topic of sustainability.

Our challenge is food and energy sustainability (in Hawaii) and how it impacts Hawaii. 90 percent of Hawaiiʻs food is imported from shipping containers. This is a problem because if the shipping companies stop shipping food to Hawaii, then Hawaii will be devastated. Energy wise, Hawaii does really good and is leading other states in producing renewable energy. In Hawaii, Coal Generation provides 15% and renewable energy sources provide the rest.

The industrial age had a significant impact on humanity and the Earth which ripples through time and affects us even now. Due to the boom in population and a turn towards mass production, food became harder to come by, and of a lower quality. Unfortunately in many countries stricken with poverty, there is also a lot of skepticism with possible solutions to hunger. For example many children weaned on rice in Asia may have felt repercussions throughout their entire lives due to a lack of vitamin A. When researchers realized this, they genetically engineered rice by taking a gene from daffodils, responsible for their bright orange color, so it would contain much higher levels of beta-carotene, the active ingredient. This would have solved the problem of vitamin A deficiencies and led to a higher overall health in children. However, the reason we donʻt see this rice everywhere, is due to two words. Genetically modified. Due to these taboo words, “Golden Rice” has received major backlash, preventing it from being implemented. This is an example of how if communities were better educated in sustainable agriculture and health, and scientists worked hard to make unique solutions to international problems, world hunger would be much less of a problem.

The French Revolution: Hawaiʻi & Sustainability
What happened to begin the french revolution was cultural and political conflict. The theory of the Enlightenment desacralized the state and the Catholic Church's supremacy and encouraged a new society based on reason rather than rituals. It is also a political conflict because of the conflict between the state and the bourgeoisie over the tax system's "reform" culminated in chaos and ruin.
There is a sign of cultural conflict in modern Hawaiʻi, which relates to the french revolution. There are people in Hawaiʻi that believe that America did not take the country in a respectful manner, but most of them have a friendship with the U.S. cultural differences stem from isolation and family dependence. There was also political conflict in Hawaiʻi like the bombing of Pearl Harbor and many other disagreements among the states and Hawaiʻi.
We should be prepared by having the Hawaiian Nation realize how much of a problem sustainability is here. If more people understand the problem of sustainability then they can also help Hawaii become 100% sustainable. Some solutions are to build more farms and fishponds to help produce more food. We can also build more wind turbines/Solar panels/water turbines to help produce more energy.

Expansion Concepts to Our Project
What impacts our topic today is due to the expansion and colonization of the earlier empires, many places which were once rich in resources and culture are now devoid. This is one of the many causes for the lack of sustainability in the modern world. The exploration also required huge amounts of energy and eventually led to the discovery and dependence on fossil fuels which still plagues us today. Although there are many more, these few reasons prove the tie between our Kahiau project and the era of exploration is very strong.
The Independent Hawaiian Nation relates to our Kahiau Project through helping Hawaiʻiʻs land. In our community service, what we did was build a rock wall and helped restore the limu. During this event, we learned how to carefully move the rocks, as well as, the sea creatures that were in the ocean at the time. This relates to Hawaiʻi through caring for the land and its resources. We helped restore the land for future generations and future Hawaiʻi as well.
The major concept that impacted globalization to set up our Kahiau Project was Colonization. Once land was colonized, people had to think about sustainability so they could survive and thrive. They had to think about how everyone would be able to eat and drink and then find out how to take care of their resources. They had to build farms, wells, ponds and many others.

Triangulating Enlightenment, Industrialization, Colonization & Imperialism to Universal Sustainability
One of the most impactful influences in the Industrial Revolution relates to sustainability. New energies in city life's conveniences created a demand for other goods, such as clothes and non-essential items, which increased quality of life. To satisfy the influence of growing demand for these goods, new technologies were developed, contributing to the first industrial factories. Soon, people moved into more numerous cities to find employment as workers at the factory. The environmental impact of the Industrial Revolution. The planet has undergone a major population growth, which has contributed to the loss of natural resources, along with a rise in living standards. The use of additives and coal in manufacturing resulted in increased air and water pollution as well as improved fossil fuel consumption. Our Kahiau Project impacts Modern Hawaii because of the environment. Our Hawaiian communities, culture, and atmosphere is extremely important in Hawaii, and becoming sustainable can make a significant difference.

Environmental ethics is concerned with human-natural world interactions. This includes different responses to biocentrism, including anthropocentrism. The concept is fresh, though the concepts of environmental ethics have always been present in society, according to the philosopher Erazim Kohák. An environmental philosopher is Arne Næss' who was a key figure in the environmental movement of the 1970s. His philosophy's key term is "deep ecology" which describes one of two major environmental approaches recognized by Næss in current environmental efforts. The philosophy of Mathews has its roots in panpsychism, an approach which considers mentality to be fundamental in the natural world and believes even small micro-level entities are mindful. Mathews is also rooted in aboriginal environmental experiences, and is adapting them to the global society of today. When it comes to environmental regulation, she is of the view that we should not recover all the former industrial operations.

Imperialism plays a part in perpetuating the problem in my Kahiau Project because every time land is colonized it has to become sustainable in order for people to stay on that land. If the land is not able to be sustainable for the people sooner or later the people wonʻt be able to live on the land anymore and theyʻll have to move somewhere else. If people have to move somewhere else then that place will have to change to become sustainable with them. This cycle could cause big areas of land to become dry of resources because there was to many people. This connects to Hawaiʻi because the US colonized Hawaiʻi. So now we are trying to become fully sustainable so we donʻt have to rely on shipping companies that bring supplies from the mainland and other countries to the islands so that we can get food.

Many factors were key in the goal of colonization, however, a few had more effect than the others. For example, the requirement of money which was commonly tied to agriculture at the time, led to a requirement of land. Because of this need for land, many nations went out in exploration and colonization of new lands. This drastically increased the rate at which industrialization was occurring, and helped imperialism flourish. Another driving factor of expansion was the trade of new ideas itself. A huge product of this age, ideation and its trade, also drove the age itself. The way this works is that by acquiring new ideas, these ideas can be put to use to better their process and more easily trade ideas. What this does is create a positive feedback loop. These factors play a huge role on our kahiau project due to a few reasons. The rapid and unsustainable taking and farming of land led to the draining of its resources and an unsustainability which affects us today. This is the concept of our Kahiau Project. The trade of ideas also affects our Kahiau problem as well, in a less direct way. The trade of ideas during this period of globalization eventually evolved into the industrial and scientific revolution which as we discussed previously, highly affects our every aspect of daily life.

ʻĀina, War, Nations and Native Identities
- The First World War began in 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed, which continued until 1918. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Main Powers) battled against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the USA (the Allied Powers) during the war. I think this type of leadership isnʻt very pono, there was a lot of violence and many were killed in war. Though, I do believe that sometimes war is somewhat necessary for nations to make decisions and fight for their home.
- The rise and fall of nations can affect the ʻāina because of instability. It could do with companyʻs not being able to make money, or shipments being invalid due to a war. An example is the coronavirus, this virus has affected so many countryʻs and local owners of companyʻs. The rising and falling of nations isnʻt ideal for people because it is hard for many people to adjust and adapt to change.
- Some struggles between national and native identities is that the national perspective is much larger. For example, many were injured or killed in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This affected our Native population and families, but it also connected to our nation because we are a part of the United States. Our Kahiau Project is about sustainability and conserving energy, it aims to resolve modern day challenges. We want to keep our Earth healthy and less polluted, we did a community service project with the Pā Honu in Waimānalo to help resolve the issue of the limu walls getting deteriorated throughout the decades.
- The Cold War has influenced us today by allowing the West to resist Communist rule; without interference by the U.S. powers. China and the Soviet Union may have dominated Europe and the U.S. Eventually, the Cold War helped to shape modern-day relations, partnerships and tensions between nations. Some solutions for the people of Hawaiʻi to deal with the struggle of Covid-19 is to stay indoors and stay safe. The more people leave their homes, the more chances of catching an illness occurs and can be easily spread from person to person. As a Hawaiian community, we have to protect our kūpuna and keiki by obeying the laws.
