Homelessness As a Local Issue Despite hawaii’s main selling point of being a tropical paradise there are some very real and very present issues. Of those issues homelessness is glaring. To outline this issue all you really have to do is look at the statistics. According to Hope Services Hawaii statewide between 12,00-15,00 people are homeless at some point of the year. In addition 33% of the homeless population in hawaii are mentally ill, 21% have substance abuse disability , and 33% are children under the age of 18. Those troubling statistics are the reality of this so called tropical paradise.
