Decolonization
The positive effect that European Power decolonizing a colony is that they brought forward revolutionary new technology and better strategies and economic advancement. Making our present into what it is now.
When Britain decolonized Africa, Africa was left with a broken economy and most of the country was in poverty. Rich countries create unjust trading structures by shielding their markets with high agricultural tariffs and heavily subsidizing their own agriculture. This suffers agriculture on the African continent and is slowed down in its development from the outset. The governments of the USA, the countries of Europe and other prosperous states thus contribute to poverty in Africa with their policies.

Media portrays the military as the big bad that does things behind your back
- Military testing creates nuclear pollution which can leak into the ocean causing problems with the ocean and marine life.
- Queen Liliuokalani attempted to restore royal powers in 1893, but was placed under house arrest by businessmen with help from the US military. ... This government agreed on behalf of Hawaii to join the US in 1898 as the Territory of Hawaii. In 1959, the islands became the state of Hawaii of the United States
- The Attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, on the morning of December 7, 1941. Due to this day the U.S thought it would be important to set up a stronger military in Hawaii so that if another event like this were to occur Hawaii and the U.S would be prepared. Hawaii’s military defence system was also strengthened so that if the U.S was attacked they could protect them.

Globalization in Hawaii
The literal translation of Colonization is the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area. Or the action of appropriating a place or domain for one's own use. And the literal translation of Imperialization is Imperialism is a type of government that seeks to increase its size, either by forcing (through war) or influencing (through politics) other countries to submit to their rule. And a simple definition is, The definition of imperialism is the practice of a larger country or government growing stronger by taking over poorer or weaker countries that have important resources.
The role of colonization/ imperialization in Africa has impacted the lives of everyone living there. When colonizers discovered africa they thought the people were savage people who needed help being governed as seen in the book Okonkwo they imposed their religion onto them and caused a cultural change for many. Then after slave labor was adopted by europeans they would enslave the africans and cram them into slave ships with little to no space and would go across the atlantic to the states. The colonization of Africa changed everyones lives from africans to americans.
Some specific dates of events in history where the role of globalization was evident in Hawaii was when the overthrow first happened. When the people of Hawaii thought that Christopher Columbus was Lono and that he brought a lot diseases. When the hawaiian people first made the first Lokoʻia. Also when the first hawaiian fish pond was made.
When new people came to our land not only were diseases and a new way of life but they didn’t understand the way things went on here. We had a system going on that was so advanced and insured that everyone got what they needed and they took care of the land and ocean that provided them food. However, when the foreigners came they messed everything up because they didn’t have respect for the ocean. And now even today we face the same issue with tourists coming here and thinking they own the place and doing whatever they want killing our earth a little at a time.

UN Relations
The United Nations (UN) is an international organization created in 1945, shortly after the end of WWII. The UN was formed by 51 countries in order to encourage resolution of international conflicts without war and to form policies on international issues. Our goal to better humanity is to make sure that the ocean life can be sustainable and that it can flourish. The United Nations goal is to make sure that the ocean is clean. Also that the life below water can flourish without any harm towards it. Our goal, being to better humanity and ensure ocean life is sustainable relates to our topic because our topic involves restoring our oceans to their former glory and getting rid of the trash that pollutes our local waters. Another country that deals with ocean pollution is Indonesia but specifically Bali. there is a quote by a local resident that and he says "never seen anything on this scale" before. Bali is in the middle of a through-flow that brings a constant flow of trash to the Indonesian islands
Global Economic / Industrial Impacts
- Capitalism can have a big role in the ocean because lawmakers don’t usually put the wellbeing of our earth first. We have been faced with global warming issues and the government has done nothing. We are on our own and if we want to save our earth it is going to have to be our own effort and good doing.
- Personally, I feel that capitalism is better because capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. And communism is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. Therefore I feel that capitalism is better because that is the world that I live in. and communism is bad because you own nothing the government owns everything that is in the country.
- In our capitalist society, I would say it works but there is always a question of if there is something greater out there. We haven’t seemed to come up with anything that can improve our world and poverty and mistreatment of certain people. I think it doesn’t cause poverty we do but it does enable the super rich people to become more and richer but they do it by choice. The whole point of the system is that if you work hard you can get what you want. So if someone doesn’t want to work for it then they won't get what they want.
- Karl Marx and fellow German thinker Friedrich Engels published “The Communist Manifesto,” which introduced their concept of socialism as a natural result of the conflicts inherent in the capitalist system. The theory that Karl Marx came up with is The Labor Theory of Value, this theory stated that the value of a produced economic good can be measured objectively by the average number of labor-hours required to produce it.
- As a result of the wars, they contribute and set up our issue because all the trash that was left went straight into the ocean. All the chemical that was used might have made its way to the ocean and polluted the water.
Non-Profit (808 Cleanups)
808 Cleanups is an environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaii’s natural beauty by empowering volunteers to conduct decentralized cleanups from mauka to makai, responding to littering and vandalism of Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces, saving Hawaiʻi’s indigenous ecosystem through education and building sustainable solutions with community partners.
It's a local concern because it affects what this world will be like in the future and what our kids will have to live with. So if we didn't start saving this planet and cleaning our oceans then what will our kids have to live with. Fact one the ocean is the main source of life and if we neglect that then we will most likely die. Fact two polluting the ocean can lead to the death of fish that we eat and can harm us seeing that that is one of our source of food. Fact three if the water is polluted then what will we drink.
808 Cleanups is a non-profit that takes part in an assortment of cleanups. Some of the services that this non-profit participate in range from beach, ocean, road, forests, school and graffiti cleanups. They are an alliance of volunteers trying to make Hawai’i cleaner, safer and stronger from mauka to makai. People like them that help all over are the reason that we have a beautiful Island and if we help them wherever that may be we are helping the island as a whole.
808 Cleanups connects to our group project because 808 Cleanups is an organization committed to restoring Hawaii’s natural beauty. Our project focuses on cleaning up Hawaii’s oceans and beaches. Hawaii’s oceans and beaches are very important because it brings life, food, and a source of water.

ISSUE
Our ocean plays an important part in our way of life here in Hawaii. It is full of unique wildlife that plays an important part in not only our ecosystem but is used as an option for food. Not to mention the enjoyment that the ocean brings to people young and old. Surfers, paddlers, swimmers, divers… the list could go on. We all love the ocean and need it in one way or another, whether or not we realize that. So that is why it is our job to join together to do whatever is necessary to keep our kai thriving.
RESEARCH: Over the last few decades human activities have severely affected marine life by creating pollution they have destroyed the environment for sea creatures. If we continue to destroy ocean life we may end up creating an enviorment uninhabitable by sea creatures.
If we continue at the current rate our oceans will be continually polluted eventually making them unsafe to enter. This greatly affects us Hawaiians because if he cannot access the ocean we will lose apart of our culture.
The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. Which means it is a valuable natural resource to the whole world. But if it keeps getting dirtier and dirtier we will be doomed. The majority of the garbage that enters the ocean each year is plastic. However that is not all of it. The Great Garbage Patch is the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world, and is located in the ocean between Hawaii and California. There are more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic in this island, and is estimated to weigh 80,000 pounds. This horrible island of filth is a representation of our lack of care for the ocean and should be enough to show us that we need to change our ways.
Pollution comes from but is not limited to boats, airplanes, cars, trucks and even lawnmowers are floating in our ocean. While some of the degree is dumped directly into the sea an estimated 80% of marine liter makes its way gradually from land base sources. Some of these land base sources include storm drains, sewers, dumps and other routes. This is yet another excellent reminder and reason why we should be cautious on how we reduce plastic pollution and agricultural runoff and other forms of marine poisoning pollutants to the toxic brew. THANK YOU!!
