Homelessness and Poverty in East Africa
(Contributed By Kanaʻi Gibson)
Our UN sustainability goal is to end homelessness and poverty. Homelessness is both a cause and a symptom of human rights being abused, denied, and violated. Homelessness starts off with a lack of your basic human rights. For example there is no work, no health care, no social security, privacy, and education. Inadequate housing is also a huge cause in homelessness, homes are too expensive or there is no space to even buy a house that is too expensive. Another issue would be you donʻt have a job therefore no money. All of this is what leads you to becoming homeless or what leads you to live in poverty. Homelessness is an urgent problem because every second of every day there are people suffering which is why we need to fix this problem right away and stop that suffering. Homelessness has had a huge effect on South Sudan, 20% of people in South Sudan have been homeless since 2013. There was conflict between President Salva Kiir of the Dinka ethnic group and former Vice president Machar and this caused 2.2 million people to have no home or to be misplaced. It forced 1.1 million people to become refugees. 4.2 million children need help due to homelessness in South Sudan. Due to chaos the education rate rests at 28%. In South Sudan there are 6 million people that lack water and meals. The United Nations estimated that there are 12 million people hungry every second in South Sudan. People in South Sudan are struggling and have nowhere to go. Homelessness continues to affect them in the meanwhile they are being forgotten about. According to Sudan: Homeless, stateless and stranded. (2017, January 13), an estimated 400,000 South Sudanese have been stranded in Khartoum since their country's independence.
This issue is impacting the ʻāina in our region because it is impacting the people. Many people are stuck outside living on the streets because they don't have a job or because homes are too expensive. The list of reasons for why people in Hawaiʻi go homeless are endless, the list of reasons for why people anywhere go homeless are endless. Homelessness is affecting people's safety because it forces people to live on the streets which therefore puts them in an unsafe environment. Homelessness also affects our lands because homeless people's trash just goes everywhere creating pollution.

Non-Profit Organizations Addressing This Problem Globally
(Contributed by Connor Seminivage)
Different organizations around the world do their best to come up with ideas to try and stop homelessness. These people and organizations address homelessness as a thing that shouldn’t be happening. The Development of Charter Cities will put people at the center, while better managing rapid urbanization and accelerating SDG implementation (The development of Charter Cities - United Nations Partnerships for SDGs platform, 2019). UCSI’s “Leave No One Behind” education project commits to provide vocational internships/apprenticeships for youths that have minimal or no access to a quality education program. The related issue that Hawaiʻi and East Africa have is people living in poverty and homelessness. This issue in Hawaiʻi is trying to get solved and according to the Daily Herald there are homes being built for people that can't afford everyday homes and need something a little less expensive. The historical development of this is that it started from homes being too expensive and people not having the money to buy them. People not having enough money and no jobs is what then turns them to living on the streets, park benches. Etc. According to the Daily Herald “there are shelters and programs to help the homeless, there are far fewer empty beds than are needed - about 550 on any given night on Oahu, where an estimated 4,900 of the 7,620 homeless people live, according to service providers. Another organization helping out in Hawaiʻi is IHS or in other words The Institute For Human Services. According to IHSʻs website “IHS provided three meals daily to anyone in need. Over the past 10 years, we have served 2,849,999 meals. With a growing demand for homeless services, the demand for meals continues to increase each year”(Programs & Statistics - IHS, The Institute for Human Services, 2020). IHS is helping homeless by giving food and help. IHS has also provided many shelters and homes to over 17,306 people in Hawaiʻi

The RYW experience is valuable to my everyday life as a member of the community because the things that I have learned will help me to better my community. The things I've learned from my RYW experience is first creative activism. Creative activism will help my community out by getting everyone to get out and help their community. By bringing creative activism to my community it will help to get noticed by greater authorities so we can get more things that we want and need. For example our community basketball court is all asphalt and cracked so if I bring creative activism to the table and can get everyone to help out then maybe we could fix it or fix anything in our community. The RYW experience will also help out my community because it has taught me to be creative and to think outside of the box, to use new ideas. Something I can do to help fix our community and raise money could maybe be a car wash or even cleaning peoples yards. The possibilities are endless and this is because of my experience with RYW.
