Colonization can be both good and bad for my Kahiau project topic of poverty. On the side of the colonizers, this can be good, because we know that the colonizers will take care of each other, and if someone isn't getting enough food, then they will share with each other. In that situation there is almost no way of having poverty unless the whole unit is in poverty. On the other side of things, it can be very easy for the natives to be in poverty because their land is being taken and all their work in finding that area and farming it will have gone to waste as the colonizers take that land and push the natives aside. The natives will have to find some new land and new crops to farm but in-between that time, they will all be stuck in poverty without food or shelter. Famous colonial people. (n.d.). Retrieved May 05, 2021, from https://www.landofthebrave.info/famous-people-in-american-history.htm Imperialism single handedly put a halt to the culture of Hawai'i starting from when the queen was overthrown. The United State's military that was send to Hawai'i overthrew the queen and with that, stoped a lot of cultural practices such as the simple act of speaking Hawaiian. In schools, kids couldn't speak Hawaiian, and if they did, they were beat by their teachers. So the imperialism from the U.S. was a big factor as to why we don't have as many native speakers as we did back maybe 200 years ago. But without these events, some other events wouldn't have happened today such as the Mālama Honua voyage, because the reason why voyaging was almost lost was because of our culture getting silenced. But one man named Nainoa Thompson learned from the last knowledgable native celestial navigator and brought back the skill and taught lots of people, then did a voyage around the entire Earth to spread a message to take care of the Earth. So even though imperialism caused a lot of problems, there were also good things that came out of it. Overthrow of the HAWAIIAN Kingdom. (2021, May 03). The Industrial Age and the Revolutions that occurred because of it, such as the French Revolution, affect my Kahiau project in the sense of poverty. One of the main reasons for the French Revolution was the poverty that people were put in because the Queen, Marie-Antoinette, used all the tax payers money for her own jewelry and food, and when she was told that her peasants were starving, she said “let them eat cake” as a mockery. Now because of that event, a lot of countries learned not to kick the poor people while theyʻre down because they will rebel. In places like Hawaii, people in poverty probably won’t rebel, but maybe in a place like NY or LA, people probably could rebel. Akana, Hoku. Flipped Lecture Kelly, K. (n.d.). That event helped the shape a lot of countries, and also helped Hawaii because they know to help the homeless and to not completely give up on them. The solution to homelessness in Hawaii is to make more non-profit organizations for homeless people for things like food and shelter so that they can get back on their feet and get a job and a home.

Global warming has been a problem since the late 1800s because of factories and cars emitting CO2. This has only gotten worse though because of more cars on the road today as the main use of transport, and bigger factories for a bigger population. The problem with looking to the past for answers is that there are no answers for this problem. This is a new problem that is being looked at, because back then people didn't know that cars and smoke would hurt the ozone layer and cause climate change, so this is up to the people here today to solve these problems. They showed me lots of ways to spread your message through many sorts of media such as art, videography, and journalism. Because of so many new technological advancements, there are so many ways to spread messages that were unavailable even 30 years ago. We have phones, and the easiest way to spread a message is to go on social media such as facebook or instagram and put out a post and everyone in the world can see it. So with that being said, there can be a countless number of ways to spread a message for the world to see. Fox, C. (2020, November 12). Social media: How might it be regulated? The silk road was basically a trading route back hundreds of years and now in the modern day, it's more like planes, ships, and trucks that are transporting goods. Since Hawai'i is an island, we really depend on ships and planes to bring us food and supplies. If we were to all come together as a planet, we could use our modern silk road to bring food to everyone and solve the hunger portion of poverty. Boats & planes. (2019, November 26). Since Hawai'i is an island, that means there is limited space, and once it's all taken, there's no where to go because it's all ocean off the island. Expansion to the Mainland would be better for people in poverty because land is cheaper there because there's more area. Also because there's more land and it's cheaper, more people would be able to afford a house and get out of poverty. Rowan, A.
