So, Colonization and imperialism had a great effect that would still last to today on gender inequality. Gender inequality can actually stem from the opportunities women had in the 20th century. Mainly, in the 20th century women lost their job opportunities due to colonialism. Job segregation was a big thing then and still is now. We see women in today's society where they struggle to get job offers and be able to work on certain jobs because men seem to fit that role better. In Europe men were always seen as superior to women because of strong kinship systems. Imperialism changes our view in history for many reasons. Imperialism is known as countries extending their power and force through military force. As we known from this whole class "The winners write the history". I think that having that perspective is key to understanding that maybe some things happened in a different way but due to the people winning and writing the history they are able to write it whatever way they want. I think it doesn't deter is from finding a solution but it does create a bigger one. especially because Hawaiʻi is occupied a lot by military bases and it causes more problems for Native people. Hawaiʻiʻs prices for hoes are slowly increasing a lot as time goes on making it hard for people Natives to get a house and reside here. Oahu Real Estate Report. IndustrialThe industrial and French revolution have brought upon many problems and some of these problems can be traced until today! Our Kahiau topic is on gender inequality and its a huge thing that still exists today. I can link this back to the industrial revolution where factories, machines, and all these new types of technology are being formed. Technology such as machinery and factories were a huge thing because these were al types of job sources that people needed to be able to get money to support themselves as well as their family. I can connect this to one of the main problems in gender inequality known as job segregation. Job segregation are more commonly found to be applied to women stating they are not eligible to work in this area. Women in the past were forced to work on fields and do all hard labor while men were sitting inside a factory working because factory work was considered "a mans job". The industrial revolution still plays a part today! Especially when it comes to gender inequality. Further understanding our history is a great way for us and especially others to understand why things are happening and why most Hawaiians are not happy with what the government is doing. For example, if David Ige and the whole government system were raised and learned the past lives of Hawaiian ancestors I strongly believe things such as building a multi million dollar telescope is not something people would want to have. To know the root of the Hawaiian peoples anger would also be really important and maybe Hawaii might change. I think it's David Iges ignorance and poor decisions toward the Hawaiian people that make us Hawaiians dislike him. For example we have lots of people including our kupuna who are still working to push for a change. Sustainable Development Goals. (n.d.). I learned that art is really important and can help show what you want to present to others. Whether it be to bring awareness for certain problems or to show the new upcoming young activist that may want to strive to become a creative activist by presenting their art work. Art can be showcased to throughout the world to bring awareness for change such as painting on street walls, canvases, and even flags for when people protest. Art in modern day society is everything because people nowadays would rather see a big sign that pops rather than read a long essay formatted article about the issue. Creative activist use art to bring awareness to our history and show how mistreated people were. The most important part of my current event that relates to our current class is the geography of the land and how people were affected. Christchurch was known to be one of the bigger cities in New Zealand. We see how the effects of the earthquake have really transformed the whole land by destroying man-made things such as cars, houses, and sources of food and electricity. This can also relate to the health of the land and how we should keep nature around us. Now the city of Christchurch will most likely have a park the size of Central Park in New York city if not bigger. Although it is sad to see all the people getting stripped from their homes, losing necessities, and their overall lifestyle it’s also good for us to have a good place where nature is at. The most important takeaway from the speakers is that there are so many activists that are wanting to change the world little by little. I thought it was cool to know that people are willing to go this for change. From creating PSAʻs, doing presentations, and traveling all over the world to experience people’s struggles and wanting to change that. Advocacy in Hawaiʻi can bring awareness to our own problems and when we have public groups that stand up for a certain cause it makes people in our own community more confident to stand up for each other. Advocacy in the media can help serve our kānaka by bringing awareness to our problems if we have any. Works cited Activist academics threaten the integrity of higher ed. (2020, July 12). I believe colonization can relate to the unequal treatment for people of color. In colonization we see over 11 million people of color be forced into working hard. We see people of color be treated unequal nowadays as well where people of color are being killed by police. According to a research cops are 3.23 more times likely to kill a colored person opposed to a white man. Our conducted research also talks about gender inequality. In Hawaiʻi a big thing was wages and how people get paid. The wage gap for womens and mens page in Hawaiʻi is higher than the national figure but still wrong to have a difference in pay. According to the study black women get paid 71 cents per dollar paid to men and the national figure is 62 cents. So, I think treatment of others based on color and ethnicity can compare to our topic. The next thing I want to connect to is the silk roads to today’s world of trade. Although we may not have the official silk road we still have ways that exercise the use of trade. For example, nowadays we have bigger trucks that transport goods, spices, and technology all around the world. We in Hawaiʻi are very invested in this type of thing. We receive our resources from the mainland through shipments and planes. We rely on this type of trade/buying system just like countries may have to survive. Works Cited
