I researched K’inich Janaab’ Pakal I of the Mayan empire and Queen Lili’uokalani. K’inich Janaab’ Pakal 1 ascended to the throne at the age of 12 and ruled successfully until his death at the age of 80. He lived from 23 March 603 CE to 31 March 683 CE. He is most famous for raising the city of Palenque from relative obscurity to a great power. He built many temples and some are still standing today. Not much else is known about him much like the other Mayan rulers. Queen Lili’uokalani was the last monarch of the kingdom of Hawai’i and a gifted songwriter. She lived from 1838 to 1917 and composed over 160 songs during her lifetime. She was overthrown with the help from the US government and ceded here rule to stop bloodshed.

I researched the Russian Empire, the geographic area of Russia which is a country in Europe and North Asia. The Russian leader I researched was Peter the Great who was a Russian czar in the late 17th century. He ruled jointly with his brother (Ivan V) during 1682-1696 (Ivan V death). Peter developed Russia into an empire, he abolished Russia’s archaic form of government, adopted many Western customs, and was successful in expanding the Russian empire with territorial gains. The icon I chose for Peter the Great were two swords. During Peter’s reign, he is best known for creating a strong navy and military. As well, he essentially formed Russia’s first standing army in 1699 and invested intense training into it, this is why he was a brave leader. He also followed kuleana because Ivan V left a nation severely undeveloped compared to European countries, for Peter, however, he was able to form a great civilization. Palani Vaughan was the Hawaiian leader that I chose to research. He lived from1944 - 2016. The icon I chose was an ukulele because he was a famous Hawaiian musician who wrote many amazing songs including Heeia, Ipo Lei Manu, and Ia Oe E Ka La. Palani Vaughan exemplifies the leadership trait of nānā i hope because he wrote many meles that were about Hawaiian culture and the past reign of Kalākaua. He brought meaning to his music by preserving Hawaiian culture through his lyrics. In addition, he formed the King’s Own musical group as a tribute to King Kalākaua. Through this, he was able to bring forth stories and the history of Kalākaua, and went on to record four albums in the 1970s and 1980s in the king’s honor.

Zach's Empire Project
I researched the Russian Empire and their great ruler, Catherine II, which I could compare to Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Catherine II had reigned from 1762 - 1796 and Bernice Pauahi Bishop had reigned in 1834 - 1884. Catherine the Great was born in 1729 and ruled till the day she died. Princess Pauahi was born in 1831 and had also ruled till the day she had died. I had chosen these leaders because of how powerful they both were and how they made such a dramatic change/ impact onto their people, government, and nation. They did things out of their love for their people and not just for themselves. They were proud historians. During these terms of these two leaders, they exemplified what a true leader would do. A leader that people would understand and look up to. They didnʻt care so much about their own lives but that they have a responsibility to take care of those they rule over. Not only the people, but everything to their gods, government, the ʻāina, etc.

The two leaders that I did my project on were Puakea Nogelmeier and Qin Shin Huang. First my Native leader I chose is Puakea , who was a professor of Hawaiian Language at UH Mānoa and taught for 30 years until retiring. He is actually not Hawaiian by blood but fell in love with the language. He says being Haole can be both a disadvantage and also an advantage. He loved teaching others about the culture and the beauty of ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i. My Empire leader that I chose is Qin Shi Huang. He was from the Asia Empire and the one to unify ancient China. he He was the first Emperor of China helped form it into what it is today, built many new things to help improve China but was also known to be a brutal leader. During his 35 year reign he was able to set the foundation for the great wall of China. He was not considered a good or bad leader but known to be an effective leader from the help he gave China. I chose to talk and learn more about these two leaders because they show me the Hawaiian Values of Lōkahi (balance, unity, harmony) Po’okela (excellence) and Kuleana (responsibility). They did what they needed to do to better their lāhui even though they would get judgements from those around them. The quotes that I chose to represent each leader is for Puakea Nogelmeier is “I am ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i referring to his occupation and compassion and for Qin Shi Huang is Brutal but Efficient and that is referring to his reign has a leader.
Jonathan's View
Traits of leadership that seem to stand out are traits of mindfulness, initiative, confidence, responsibility, and compassion. Traits that I would like to develop are confidence, contentment, and ambition. I would want to develop confidence to help with my decision making while being proud of what I do. I would work on contentment to be grateful for what I have so I don’t keep focusing on the next new thing. Lastly, I would work on ambition so I am able to take the initiative for things I want to achieve without the help of others to always bring me there. I feel that necessary traits to navigate through the issues we face today are humility, patience, determination, and adaptability.
