The Hunger Crisis
(Contributed by Mariyah Mossman & Aulana Rogan)
The world is suffering from Hunger Crisis and it continues to affect millions of people around the world and cause great damage to regions everyday. Hunger is the state in which people are not able to eat or get food in their bodies for long periods of time. The Action Against Hunger website states, “According to the UN's Hunger Report, hunger is the term used to define periods when populations are experiencing severe food insecurity—meaning that they go for entire days without eating due to lack of money, lack of access to food, or other resources” (Action Against Hunger, 2021). Hunger has also caused poverty. Poverty is a main cause of the hunger issue in our world because goods are being unevenly distributed leading to many people not being able to get their hands on money or food. The Hunger Project states “Poverty causes hunger. Not every person living in poverty faces chronic hunger, but almost all people facing chronic hunger are also living in |
poverty. Millions live with hunger and malnourishment because they simply cannot afford to buy enough food, cannot afford nutritious foods or cannot afford the farming supplies they need to grow enough good food of their own. Hunger can be viewed as a dimension of extreme poverty. It is often called the most severe and critical manifestation of poverty” (The Hunger Project, 2021). Most people living in extreme poverty are not able to support themselves or their families financially which leads to the suffering of hunger. THP.org states, “Poverty, food prices and hunger are inextricably linked. Poverty causes hunger. Millions live with hunger and malnourishment because they simply cannot afford to buy enough food, cannot afford nutritious foods or cannot afford the farming supplies they need to grow enough good food of their own” (Poverty – The Hunger Project, 2021). Poverty is directly linked to hunger because people are not able to buy the food they need in order to feed themselves and their families. Micheal Krumholtz of the Latin America Reports states, “People in Latin America are facing a growing hunger crisis, a new report from the United Nation says that Hunger in the region has worsened over the past five years in Central and South America at a disproportionate rate compared to the rest of the world” (Krumholtz, 2020). Poverty and hunger are closely linked and work together to create a huge world issue.

The UN declaration of human rights is a declaration which states that anyone anywhere has basic human rights which should not be violated. Research Guides state, “One of FAO's strategic objectives is to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Founded in 1963, WFP is the lead UN agency that responds to food emergencies and has programmes to combat hunger worldwide” (Research Guides: Food Security and Nutrition - A Global Issue: Key UN Bodies, 2021). This issue is urgent because millions of people suffer from hunger everyday and it is greatly impacting our world. Hunger impacts our geographical region because in South America alone over 39 million people are living with hunger and 5 million children suffer from malnutrition. A further 190 million are listed as food insecure meaning they arenʻt sure when they will get food. This historical purpose for the UN to adopt this UN sustainability goal is because way too many people in our world are going hungry with nothing to eat. This goal was placed to make sure that |
everyone has access to nutritious food. Hunger impacts the Āina in many ways because not only is the land heavily impacted, all the resources in which the land provides for the humans are impacted. People are not able to afford land nor are they able to afford farming. “The unequal distribution of income and lack of resources in developing countries means that millions of people simply cannot afford the land or farming supplies they need to grow, or otherwise gain access to nutritious food” (Jasmine Owen of World Vision States, 2020). The hunger problem in South America affects the land because people are using it for building factories and other modern industrialization, and they are not using the land for agriculture or farming. Everywhere in the world you can see humans using these valuable pieces of land, which can be used for sustainable agriculture but it is instead being used for factories and machinery. All the loss of this land also causes poverty and hunger problems because not only are people losing out on the opportunity to farm, they are losing jobs, as well as living space.

The next organization is The Hunger Project. The Hunger Project said “We are a global movement of individuals and organizations worldwide working in authentic partnership for the sustainable end of hunger.”(“What We Do – The Hunger Project,” 2021). The Hunger Project is a program throughout Africa, South Asia and Latin America that is based on an innovative, holistic approach. Adapted to meet local challenges and opportunities wherever we work, all our programs have at their foundation three essential pillars: start with women, mobilize communities, and engde government. In 2020, The Hunger Project trained 84,561 people in food security workshops. These organizations work hard everyday to help people around the world live a happy and better life. The Hunger Project states “We began piloting a new approach focused on partnership and advocacy that will bring entire municipalities to self-reliance.”. An organic “train the trainer” chain where women who have worked with The Hunger Project are training other women, creating new roles as leaders and providers,Communities building a positive recognition of women’s public participation and acknowledgement of the historical inequity women have faced and New relationships with municipal authorities that recognize the autonomy of the communities. You’re supporting communities to end hunger and poverty with sustainable and women-centered strategies. Invest now and start changing the world, make a gift, make a fundraiser “Together, we can save children’s lives. Each year, our programs around |
the world provide lifesaving treatment to hundreds of thousands of children — but there are so many more vulnerable families who need support.”, participating in events for hunger, and corporate partnerships that are doing hunger if you Join their mission to empower women, men and children to build a new future for all. Putting food on other people's plates who aren't able to do it on their own is very important to the hunger project.
Lastly, Bread for the World. Bread for the world equips people to write personal letters and emails, meet with their members of Congress, and to work with others to end hunger. Working through churches, campuses, and other organizations, we engage people in organized advocacy. They are a successful campaign, faithful communities, in letting the government know about the issue, and engaging others to make an impact of their own. These are theorganations trying to put an end to world hunger. Lastly Bread for the World, you can take action as a community, having faith in Godʻs grace, involving and speaking out to the government to do something, research about hunger and how we can end it, and by changing the policies it can help us better help the hungry. We are an organization that operates on the principle that Christians are motivated by their faith to address hunger around the world. Bread also believes that it is the moral calling of Christians to be politically engaged. Bread for the World’s work in organizing communities and individuals to speak up about hunger and poverty gets results!. The urges elected leaders in Washington, D.C., to enable people in the U.S. and abroad to feed their families and move out of poverty. These are ways you can help and contribute to try and stop world hunger through these organizations. Bread for the world is more about going and talking more about hunger. They do help with donating food but while looking at god and other people to help and support their goal.

Hunger Throughout the World & Hawaii
(Contributed by Aulana Rogan, Mariyah Mossman, Sami-Maimiti Anderson & Dustin Palama)
Hunger does not only affect second world countries, Hawaii is also impacted by this issue. There is a hunger issue in Hawaii, although it is not as big as the hunger issue in South America. Mariyahʻs FL #10 she states, “Hawaii does have a poverty and hunger issue but it is not nearly as intense as the countries in South America. Feeding America states “In Hawaii, 162,220 people are facing hunger - and of them 54,700 are children” (Hawaii | Feeding America, 2020). Miguel Barreto states “Latin America is facing a "pandemic of hunger." Last year, 47 million people in the region were classified as hungry, according to this year's report, with another 190 million listed as food insecure” (Beaubien, 2020). South America is suffering more from poverty and hunger but that does not mean that this issue in Hawaii has any less prioritization” (Mossman, 7). The hunger issue in Hawaii also stems from one root, and that is poverty. The impact of poverty affected by the lack of agriculture. This issue is that people are not able to obtain/earn enough money to put food on the tables for their children. |
The Covid-19 has impacted the families in Hawaiʻi including families that have children suffering because of lack of resources that are being affected by the pandemic. Food insecurity has increased for families with children since the pandemic began and the numbers remains high in 2021. All Hawaiʻi households without enough food said it was because they couldn’t afford it and plus they had lost employment income due to the pandemic. 15% of Hawaiʻi households with children saying that they did not have enough to eat, 33% had low food security and 52% reported being food secure. Among all households across the country, not only those with children, 63% reported being food secure in February of this year, as compared with 57% in Hawaiʻi. 54% of households with “very low food security” received free food especially the families that are at lower rungs that arenʻt getting the help they need, including those with little education. 23% of families including children are reported receiving free food in March. Families donʻt have enough money to buy their own resources that they need so we can help them by not wasting, being aware of what we eat, and adopting a sustainable lifestyle. Another concern is the pandemic that still goes on to today. As the pandemic occurs and unemployment rises, an increasing number of people in Hawaii are struggling with hunger. People are estimated to report needing $97,005,000 more per year to meet their food needs. Food insecure households are defined as those lacking enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members. The UH study finds that 48% of Hawaiʻi families with children are experiencing food insecurity, with 15% reporting that they did not have enough food in the past week. Feeding America, a national hunger relief organization, projects that Hawaii’s food insecurity rate will increase by about 50% to some 233,000 people in 2020, up from 151,000 in 2018. Hawaii Foodbank is an affiliate of Feeding America. The organization also has spent $8.6 million purchasing food to distribute during the pandemic, he said, 21.5 times more than the average annual budget of $400,000. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continues to provide some of the biggest help to millions of people needing food. Despite pandemic cash payments, enhanced federal food benefits and free grab-and-go meals at school. Top sources that could help are food pantries, food banks, community programs, family, friends and neighbors, religious institutions, and school and other meal programs aimed at children. Possible solutions such as outreach and delivery services, universal free meals in public schools, and expanding the Double Up Food Bucks program, which supports local farmers as well as hungry people.

Zero hunger affects people all over the world, but it is a big problem in South America. Zero hunger has been affecting people in South America for as long as we can remember. It impacts people of all ages. Zero hunger affects people who are in poverty the most because they do not have the money to buy food nor do they have the resources to feed their children on their own. Everyone from young children, to elders are heavily impacted by hunger and poverty in most countries in South America. Jasmine Owens of World Vision states, “The unequal distribution of income and lack of resources in developing countries means that millions of people simply cannot afford the land or farming supplies they need to grow, or otherwise gain access to nutritious food”. Poverty is the biggest cause of hunger in today's world. Children take the hardest impacts from hunger because they rely on adults in order to receive the nutrition they need to sustain a healthy diet. Elders also struggle with hunger because they have a harder time fending and providing for themselves considering they are not able to work and make a wage. There are not many native people left in South America but according to the Food and |
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, “With a population of some 50 million people, the 826 indigenous peoples living in Latin America and the Caribbean are an indisputable source of identity and diversity. Their agri-food systems, traditional diet and sustainable natural resource production and management systems constitute a resource of incomparable value for achieving a world without hunger”. The natives through South America have a sustainable system of agriculture in which they are able to still provide for the people around them. The pandemic did not help with this goal issue considering the numbers of people suffering from hunger continue to boom. The Reuters staff state, “New data released by the UN’s World Food Program showed nearly 8 million people across the four countries are experiencing hunger this year, up from 2.2 million in 2018”. The number of people going hungry in South America is up about 6 million in a time span of 2 years. Aloha Harvest wants to help people who are unable to help themself. For example, “Aloha Harvest is the largest food rescue and redistribution organization in Hawaiʻi, getting quality excess food into stomachs instead of landfills. The hawaii food bank is all about getting food on everyone's plate. “The people of Hawaii are one ʻohana. Hawaii Foodbank provides food so that no one in our family goes hungry. The Rock Your World experience is valuable to one's everyday life as a member of a community because many skills were taught and acquired throughout the time spent with the Rock Your world staff. The main skill that I have learned from the RYW experience is to use and apply creative activism to real life situations. Creative activism is applying creative thinking & creative ideas to advocate and raise awareness on certain issues or topics that you are passionate about. Applying creativity to advocating is important because it establishes good organization, opens people's minds to more ideas to advocate more efficiently. Stephen Duncombe and Steve Lambert of the Center of Artistic Activism state “Creativity is essential to good organizing. It enables activists to imagine new tactics, strategies and goals to keep campaigns fresh and make them more effective” (Duncombe & Lambert, April 9 2018). Stephen and Steve both support my idea that creativity supports activism and helps activists be more effective and efficient. Creative Activism supports someone's everyday life as a member of a community because that person has a voice. Anyone is able to make a change and difference in a community by using their creativity and talent to positively impact the people around them.

From what Jess taught me during RYW will help me to spread awareness more and help me teach other people how to advocate and what creative Activism is. If an individual spreads awareness that's one little thing that can make a big difference but imagine if a whole community, a whole school spread awareness and how much that can impact other people. In my life I will continue to spread awareness and use creative activism to help spread because to me it is so fun having something you truly love and have passion for being shared plus it helps other people and big problems and helps shine a light on those who need it, it honestly one of the best feelings. For example in class my group's video was shared in front of the class and Jess and Sierra were so impressed and they loved it and to see people smiling and feeling happy just because of a video we worked on for a few weeks was so nice and made me feel so happy. I found a quote that is “it takes a radical imagination to be an activist, to envision a world that is not there. It takes imagination and that's not far from art.”(Montpelier, 2018). It is very self explained but it is a very good way to sun up Creative Activism. That is how I will continue to share the valuable information we learned during the RYW in my everyday life and my community.

RYW is valuable in everyday life as a member of your community, family, as a Hawaiian, school, local community citizen of the world because it helps to prepare for the future and to pass on knowledge to the next generation to do the right thing. RYW is a dynamic, standards aligned, online human rights and media arts curriculum for everyone to understand what is going on in our world. “Creative Activism to me is a way of creative thinking on how to change society and the world” (RYW - Skills & Knowledge, 2021). This means that everyone should have the right to advocate for what they believe in. This has taught me that not only your opinion matters but everyone elsesʻs opinion. We all believe in different things and thatʻs fine because we all have perspectives that see the world differently. RYW has taught me that everyone should have the right to advocate for what they believe in. The UN SD Goals and Human Rights are 2 things that RYW has taught. Everyone is the same with unique features that represent each one and how special each of us are. We all believe in different things and thatʻs fine because we all have perspectives that see the world differently. It's important to know that RYW can really change the way you see the world and how it affects people, communities, families, friends, and of course you.

The RYW experience is valuable to me in my everyday life as a member of my community because everyday I could make the world a better place. The RYW experience has taught me to take action on things such as hunger by donating food to food banks and organizations and it all helps the community to better this world. By donating money and/or food it helps people in poverty get out of there and helps them live a better life than they once had. By continuing to develop the many skills RYW has taught me, taking action in my community can affect my family in a positive way. I feel like as Hawaiians it's our duty to stand up for what we love and so making change in the community for the better is part of who we are. Also representing the school you are from when doing these activities in your community can have a big value on not only you but the kind of kids that are maturing at KS. As a citizen of this world the RYW experience has taught me to value the little things in life and donʻt be afraid of taking leadership and making change.
