OVERVIEW- During the 2018-2019 christmas break, our group planned to go to a beach cleanup with the non-profit organization Surf Rider Foundation. However, with schedule difficulties and our group members being in different places, we weren’t able to attend the event. Also, the Surf Rider Foundation didn’t have an available event during our break in the first place, unlike we thought. We then decided to make arrangements for this cleanup during our Spring break in hopes that they’d have an event for us to participate in. I'm very excited for when my group and I are able to give back to the 'āina and give back to the community. To pickup trash, interact with other people around the island, help keep the waters clean, is just such an amazing thing to think about and something amazing my group and I will soon do.
That's all for now, more posts and updates of our progress coming soon. I can't wait to get into action and begin progressing our Kahiau Project! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vlog #1- Some examples of our research topic of Clean water and sanitation in Oʻahu is that many organizations around, our helping this clean water situation. Beach cleanups are just the beginning. Others are cleaning fresh streams, filtering, etc. My group and I chose this topic because we realize the importance of water and how much it affects us here in the islands. I personally love the ocean and want those waters to be clean so everyone can enjoy it. Going to the beach for 15 years teaches you a lot, and over the years Iʻve seen dozens of pieces of trash, harming the land. Countless animals have lost their lives due to human waste. Itʻs time to take a stance. With clean waters in Hawaii, crops and plants will be able to harvest and grow better. We as kanaka maoli, will be better. Fresh water is needed to survive. A hawaiian saying goes, E inu i ka wai ola, drink of the living water, and you will never thirst. Water taken for granted everyday, is the very thing we need to live. I believe that my ability to impact the community is high, as long as I work hard and meet the goals I made to push for fresh water. Perseverance, Cooperation, and diligence are just a few of the many lessons that I will experience in doing this Kahiau project. It won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. There’s still a long way to go, to obtain clean H20. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vlog #2- Through Globalization, more people are coming to Hawaii and partaking and being greedy with our water sources. This creates an issue for my group and I’s , UN, Clean water and sanitation topic. The more water wasted, the less there is for us to enjoy and use in our daily lives. A personal connection that I have to clean water and sanitation is that my family and I try to limit our showers to 10 minutes instead of 20-30 which is how long it used to be. We also have jugs of water and water bottles stored in case of an emergency. It’s important for us to all use our water sources wisely and effectively. I have learned many things about colonization and globalization such as they are key components to how this society works. Without one or the other, we wouldn’t have everything we have today. When people come together, they generate ideas, and a group of people must have noticed the problem that we are beginning to lack clean water. This is how they saw and viewed this issue and now today, through globalization, word is being spread and we have many people trying to solve this problem of clean water and sanitation ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vlog #3- There are many examples of how imperialization and globalization creates problems and obstacles in the United States of America. We see colonization as a positive, yet very negative issue in history. People coming into native lands and seizing what is rightfully theres. I live in Oahu, one of the eight islands in the Hawaiʻi state, and I have lived here my whole life. However, we are not a state. We were a country taken over by US men. We the people of Hawaiʻi were colonized into part of the United States. This creates controversy between the native man and the white man. What if anything are you learning about imperialization? *Gives feedback ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vlog #4- Some examples companies such as Walmart and Target are creating challenges in this island, challenges relating to clean water and sanitation is that there isnʻt a lot of fresh water left, due to overusage and wastage. I know of people who really save their water, and itʻs created a huge impact . People in poverty have little to no access of fresh water. Economic trends impact clean water and sanitation because trends become the "norm". If bad economic trends happen, it inevitably finds itʻs way to our waters. Water is essential in our lives, and we need it daily. Itʻs economic importance is needed for our survival.
