The skills and content learned in World History this school year were very valuable and interesting. I was able to examine the value systems and beliefs which impact the actions and decisions of world and Hawaiian leaders, explorers, and philosophers within the worldʻs civilizations and the stories that build their foundation. I was also able to connect how events, both in the past and present, have and will affect our future events and everyday actions. Furthermore, I was able to connect how treatment of a race seemed to repetitively occur throughout history, and how the unsolved tension caused by these events have shaped the way society functions. I learned many new skills over the course of this school year such as how to write a strong essay, how to talk in an educated manner, and much more. Two new skills that I might take with me into other classes or future endeavors are photoshop and illustrator, and how to write a strong argumentative essay. Photoshop and Illustrator are great tools and skills to know going into any career field. For example, to become a doctor you need to hire nurses, receptionists, etc. An easy way to do this is to make a poster or flier about the position using photoshop and illustrator. I can also use an argumentative essay to help in my other classes such as speech, english, and even future college classes. For example, if I were to become a lawyer I would need to be able to write strong claims and points in order to represent my client well.
Some interesting topics we learned this year were how World War I continues to affect each of us over 100 years later. While WWI was known as the ‘war to end all wars’, the everlasting effects made it seem as if WWI never truly ended, just the bloodshed. World War I exhausted and devastated both sides of the war through population, resources, the economy, and much more. Throughout the gruesome four years of war, our society lost an entire generation of young men fighting for their respective nations. Today, we have a potential new World War in our hands coming off one of the deadliest plagues the world has ever seen. This disease has wiped out more than an entire generation of men, women, and children. All of America's resources were at an all time low for its citizens after joining the war since all of the food was being shipped out to soldiers on the front line. Today, we are still recovering as an economy from COVID-19, and going into another war would only raise the all time high cost of food, supplies, and necessities we need to live. Our Kahiau project is based on the UN Sustainability Goal: No Poverty. As we have seen through events like The Great Depression, when people don't have access to basic necessities such as food, water, and a stable income, the economy will crash leaving a domino effect across the globe. This will leave many people homeless or barely making ends meet. This school year has really shown me that history has a way of repeating itself, so if we don't learn from the mistakes of the past, nothing will ever change for the better, our UN goals will never decrease, and we won't be able to fix it.
