Colonization impacts our Kahiau topic, poverty because of capitalism. Capitalism perpetuates poverty because it sets people apart to make a living for themselves. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. This effect happened when the United States of America took over Hawaii. The Hawaiians were pushed down in society while rich foreigners made more money. Colonization causes poverty because countries force capitalism on native people.

Our Kahiau topic was poverty and the way the industrial age impacted poverty was that it caused people to separate into social classes. Instead of one whole community working to survive, now you have a bunch of individuals competing to be better then the person next to them. We see this in our world today. That is why we want to go to the best schools and have the most money. People are fighting their way up in society and the people who fall behind become poor. BBC, (20 May, 2020). One of the examples is of slavery and racism. In school, we learn about slavery so we can get a better understanding of why there is racism in the world today. Furthermore, knowing why and understanding problems can also help us to fix it. Learning about the past can help create a better future. Nordquist, R. (september 3, 2018). I learned that advocating can be used in different mediums. Today, we learned how to express our feelings or emotions through poems. My poem was a bout poverty and I talked about how it was a bad position to be in. I liked this assignment better than just strait up writing because it can be more engaging and stick out more to the reader. My first poem is about how people in poverty have a hard time every single day and can’t get out of their situation. The last line I used emphasizes that there really is no hope when it comes to getting back on their feet by themselves. Furthermore, we can aid these people in need and wish that they can be more happier. In my poem, I tried to visualize how homeless people, if they don't receive help, they can't help themselves.
