Empire Research Presentation
Over the past years leaders have grown off of each other to make better things and values. In Africa we have multiple individuals that have stood up for their people and continue the traditions that their ancestors used to do. Some practices of ancient African cultures still are practiced today. For example, the dance of Wodaabe is still being used by african people for their mating process. These cultures are being looked to as a model for other cultures, such as Native Hawaiians who are trying to rebuild and embrace their culture.

Laʻa:
Leaders need good values to show great leadership to their people. For example, Henrique II showed Hoʻomau, because after the first leader died he had to take over and take control of what was left. He was than the Leader of Kongo and was ready to take action. According to evidence1 they used the word succession as describing how he was. The leader that he had to carry off of was José I Mpazi za Nkanga. Another leader that still shows good leadership to this day is Nainoa Thompson. He shows Paulele ʻia, which means trustworthy. He has to sail across the ocean to spread the aloha. He has crewmates that really on him knowing where he is going. Nainoa Thompson is a navigator for the Hokuleʻa. According to evidence2 he has a big role in guiding his people in the right direction. Both Henrique II and Nainoa Thompson show great leadership because they are great role models and have great leadership values. Travis:
George Helm- I aliʻi ke aliʻi i ke kanaka was the most important leadership trait that George Helm had. The trait means, the chief is the chief because of the people. This leadership trait is most important, because without the approval of the people, or charisma, the leader does not have any power. George Helm showed this trait through his musical ability. He used music to unite people, and made himself popular, liked by the people. By using this trait, he was able to be an effective leader. Osei Kofi Tutu I- The most important leadership quality Osei Kofi Tutu had was “inspires respect, loyalty, and allegiance”. This trait is important because a good leader needs to be in control of his people, and by inspiring respect and loyalty, he can better lead his people. He exhibited this trait through his series of campaigns, and crushed all opposition. Using this trait, he then became king and founder of the Asante Empire. |
Aiden:
All leaders need Koa or the courage of a warrior and Paul Kruger has that trait. Paul Kruger was an African president who helped his people have their independence. In 1877 the African people saw Paul Kriger as their champion to help them regain independence but failed to persuade the British so organized a movement of passive resistance. Also in 1899 Paul Kruger fought against the british because they were trying to take over Africa by trying to have someone from Britain to become the Governor of the Cape Capitol. It is clear that Paul Kruger has this certain trait to help African people. Another leader who has the same trait is Pua Case. Pua Case is a protester on the Big Island and she is fighting for the government to stop building a telescope on Mauna Kea. Recently she was on the news talking about how we have to stop David Ige from building the telescope because that land is sacred to Hawaiians and should be preserved. She is saying this because Hawaiians would go up there to pray to our gods and some of the aliʻi lived there. By using this trait both leaders were successful in what they were doing Kalai: A good leader needs to have good leadership values. For example a good leader with good leadership values is Pua Case. She leads the Hawaiian people in to what is right and cares about the people of Hawaii. This shows because she leads the protests to help Mauna Kea stay a sacred Hawaiian place and not a Observatory place. She is unite-ing the people of Hawaii to stop and help what their ancestors held so sacred. For her and Hawaiians and that is an example of a good leader with good leadership values Another good example of a leader with good leadership values is this Nubian King names Tahaqra. He was a good king always seeking more and the best for his people. In fact he sought out so much for his people he united empires with another to make sure that he had a good amount of allies rather than enemies so his people wouldn't fear. Every move he made his people was the first thing that came to mind and that is perfect example of a leader with good leadership values. |
iLeader Reflection
Aiden:
One thing that I learned is that it's very hard to stay home oneday and then the next day you go on campus. It's very hard because we are used to going on campus the entire week and it's a big change from all on campus to only half on campus. I also learned about what happened to us Hawaiians and why we are living like this now. We learned that we were taken over by the white people and they tried to make us forget the Hawaiian language. |

The Hybrid environment I felt was good to me. I think it helped me get more things done and get more work done. I could do my own work at home and then when we got to go to school I was able to ask my questions. I was also able to work with my classmates at school which made it easier to communicate with them. When we were doing asynchronous work, my classmates were very easy to get a hold of and we always were working outside of class to get the group parts done. I learned from this Hybrid experience that our Hawaiian culture is very similar to some parts around the world. And what happened in the past is why some things are the way it is now. |
Travis:
One of the important ideas in this Hybrid Blended environment, about the content area of WH through a Hawaiian/Indigenous Culture Based Education lens, is that learning about history is very important. It is important to learn history because almost everything that has happened has affected Hawaiʻi in some way. If it does not affect Hawaiʻi, it can at least be related or connected to something in Hawaiʻi. For example, the story of how Hawaiʻi was colonized by foreigners is the same story of the eurocentrism view of native cultures needing help. Through Hawaiian cultural lenses, we can try to view through the native lenses of these events, and better understand the full story. |

I have learned so much throughout this course of world history but one of the main things I found interesting is how much all the stuff we learned related . I remember kumu was telling us not to worry about the workload because it will all make sense in the end. But now I am able to understand what Kumu was actually talking all the movies all the RYW all the breakout group meetings all related back to our kahiu project and our weeblys |
