Planet 911 PSA Build Out
For our 911 PSA group, we focused on the economy of Hawaiʻi during the covid-19 pandemic. Our group of 4 consisted of Mailani, Jaren, Kiaʻi, and Travis and our slogan was “Worth seeing? Yes; but not worth coming to see”. Our film “A Call for Change'' talks about how our economy is so reliant on the tourism industry that when the pandemic hit it took a toll on everything. The tourists were not coming in, therefore leaving many businesses, hotels, restaurants, and shops to undergo closure because the income was not there. Although, we also focused on the brighter side of things. When the outside people stopped coming into our state, our land was free to heal and be restored to her natural beauty. Fish were returning to our waters, coral reefs were growing, the land was resting, and so much more. The purpose of our film was to tell people and inform not only residents but also tourists to be sustainable when in Hawaiʻi by supporting local businesses and being aware of their surroundings. We wanted our PSA to capture both the positives and negatives of the situation so people could see things from 2 different perspectives rather than one. When working on our project, the process and collaboration were good. We took all of the tasks that needed to be done and divided them up amongst all of our members. The research process and planning also went pretty smoothly because we knew what we wanted to capture and how. Although, there are a lot of areas we could improve for the next time we do this type of project. I would improve and amount of time we took on each part of the assignment. When planning out our project on our templates and brainstorming ideas, we all took a lot longer than we should have because in the beginning the ideas were all over the place. I would also definitely improve the organization of the group and how things run by figuring things out better rather than being in a rush to complete it all the time. Unfortunately, our film did not get submitted into the Planet 911 competition. Our PSA “A Call for Change” was too long and went over the time limit the contest rules stated. We had a lot of bumps but I think our group did an amazing job.
