The Kahiau project is something that helps make connections between today’s issues to past events. The Kahiau project does have a lot to do with the current problems we face. It is not the first time we’ve faced these issues. For example, the sustainability goal we focused on for the Kahiau project was clean water and sanitation. China does struggle with it right now. But, the efforts to stop water pollution started years ago. “The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948 was the first major U.S. law to address water pollution. Growing public awareness and concern for controlling water pollution led to sweeping amendments in 1972. As amended in 1972, the law became commonly known as the Clean Water Act (CWA).” So you see, it started in the 1940s. The difference is these days organizations have better technology to help fight against these problems. I can’t predict the future, so I’m unsure if I’ll use this experience as a graduation capstone project as a junior or senior.
I’ve learned a lot more about the historical events that we focused on like the Enlightenment because of this Hybrid Blended environment. If we had normal school days, it would be a lot harder to really understand some things because sometimes they require more information and more explanation. With the Flipped Lectures and the Project-Based actions, it was more broken down so, it’s easier to understand the more complicated topics. We learned a lot about some leaders not being kupono from these flipped lectures. We just learned about aloha aina with Mauna Kea. “Aloha ʻĀina also means Hawaiian patriotism; love for the land and itʻs people.” You see, there are so much more connections and knowledge that I gained this summer because of the flipped lectures and the project-based learning.

09 July 2021 Current Event Analysis The Unfinished Battle for Drinking Water Security in Post-poverty Rural China By Jiayuan Wang, New Security Beat China - Mar 18, 2021 Summary: The Huangzhong district in Xining city, the capital of Qinghai Province, houses 8,980 families, who are all in poverty. But, in April 2019, they removed the “poverty alleviation county” label. MyH2O is a non-profit organization that connects communities with clean water solutions. The organization’s mission is to help villages across China have safe drinking water. In 2020, they sent out a survey to a school and had the kids take the survey. The highest problem listed in the survey was “water supply interruptions”, 63.5% to be specific. Drinking water security is a relatively low-visibility issue in China. It’s always overlooked by government officials. But, MyH2O is trying to put an end to it with “a data-powered interactive platform that provides water quality data from 938 villages in China”, as it says in the article. It’s called the H2O Map. MyH2O will rely on the Map’s data to help them make sure that all 8,980 families have access to water. Geography Theme: This article is related mostly to Human-Environment Interaction out of the 5 themes of geography. Human-Environment Interaction is when humanity affects the environment. The reason why this is the most related is that it’s not just China that has these problems. Maui had a drought not too long ago. It’s happening to us literally in our home. It’s all thanks to us speeding up climate change. But, we’re also not helping clean water sources by dumping toxins into them. Even into the ocean. That’s why it’s Human-Environment Interaction overall themes. Reaction: My reaction to learning about China and MyH2O scares me, but also gives me hope. First, it scares me because if you think about it, this could happen to us soon rather than later if we don’t appreciate the water that we have access to now, and we take for granted that it’ll always be there. But, if we’re irresponsible and we waste water, and we don’t do something to help keep our environment and water sources clean, they’ll be gone before you know it. But, MyH2O gives me hope because it shows that there are people that do care about the people and the environment enough to create a non-profit organization like MyH2O and actually doing something to conserve and provide clean water for their communities. We should take this into account to prevent this from happening in our communities. Connection/Analysis: The theme of World History that is related to this article is that it trains us to gather evidence and to find patterns and trends. The MyH2O organization created something called the H2O map. What it does is it gathers information of drinkable water sources and MyH2O uses the data and finds patterns or trends to make sure that everyone has drinking water available to them. They also had to have data on how many people needed water in the communities so that they know how much water they need to provide. So, those are two examples of how my article relates to this theme of World History. References (APA): Jiayuan Wang. (2021). The Unfinished Battle for Drinking Water Security in Post-poverty Rural China. New Security Beat. https://www.newsecuritybeat.org/2021/03/unfinished-battle-drinking-water-security-post-poverty-rural-china/ One of the common themes between maiau quality, hard work ethic, and the kuleana of leadership is that for every one of these things, you need to be good at it. To excel and get maiau quality, you need to meet the requirements and you need to do good at it. Having a hard work ethic, you need to have a really good mindset, as in you need to be able to have a strong mind and keep working no matter how hard it gets. To take on the kuleana of a leader, you need to be good and understand how to be a leader. You also need to have the natural traits of a natural-born leader to be a great leader.
I will want to have self-efficacy through advocacy in my future because one day, some people will be on a pedestal. That's when we'll have the most power and the loudest voice. Take a look at Lebron James. He lived in Akron, Ohio. He saw the schools and the children that don't have the opportunity to go to school, so he acted and made the I Promise School. Other athletes like James are also using their voices to speak out on the Black Lives Matter Movement. They would inform people on the topic. These people take action in what they believe in, while still being an athlete. So, God willing, I will become a professional athlete and use self-efficacy through advocacy in my future.
My overall experience while doing this project. If I had to give it a grade, I would say a 7/10. From finding photos to editing to presenting my poster altogether, all of those parts were easy. I had a few setbacks here and there. But, eventually, I was able to turn it around. I enjoyed the research part because I learned something that I probably never would have without this project. Photoshop was easy to use, same with Illustrator. Photoshop for future use would be the best option for me. The leaders I picked were Emperor Showa and Queen Liliuokalani. I chose them as Showa was the longest-reigning Emperor in Japanese history; Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning queen before the Overthrow. So, two significant people in both Japanese and Hawaiian history. The one fascinating thing that I learned about Emperor Showa was that he was the one that bombed Pearl Harbor. Queen Liliuokalani went up to Washington to fight to keep the Hawaiian Monarchy alive. Overall, it was a great experience. I will never forget the things that I learned.
