Some leadership skills that would be useful from the ways we could fix pollution as mentioned in my vlog reflection, include awareness and just knowing what’s best for their people. Pollution is a big problem, but a lot of people are ignorant about it because many don’t see what is happening. Whether it is because they don’t live by an ocean or maybe they live in a city. They cannot see the effects pollution has on nature and wildlife. Also, knowing what is best for your people is important because if there is a lot of pollution on your land and in your water, you will not have the resources to provide for your people.
Some other leaderships skill that would be useful is being influential/a leader that people will listen to/follow. This is important because when leading people you want to make sure they have your back and everyone is on the same page. Everyone isn’t always going to be able to see things from all points of views so you have to be able to convince your people that the decisions you make are what’s best for them. By setting an example to care for the land and water, if you are influential, your people will follow. As colonization and imperialism grow, so does the problem, of pollution. Many businesses and companies are all about money. What the most convenient and cheap thing to do is. This consists of dumping rubbish instead of disposing of it properly. When this happens, the trash will often end up in the ocean affecting wildlife and the overall sanity of the water.
If the rubbish doesn’t end up going into the water, it still has effects on wildlife and nature on land. Animals suffer the most from our waste. Without them, the ecosystem would be off balance and would eventually fail. Everything is a cycle, and will eventually come back to slap us in the face. We need to be aware of what is happening around us to stop this problem from getting worse. My group’s plan was to go to a beach clean up at Awāwāmalu with the 808 Clean Ups Organization. We had scheduled it to be on December 29th. What ended up happening was I got a surprise ticket up to Hilo to visit my friend as a Christmas present and the trip lasted from the 25th to the 31st of December. Nicole was able to go to the cleanup and take pictures for our group and interview the head guy that was running the cleanup. It would have been better if I and Nanea could’ve been there also to participate but we’ll just have to find another clean up to go to. I feel like pollution is being more noticed because people are standing up more for the planet and social media is also playing a big role in bringing awareness to this subject. When I do a beach clean up, I do believe that I will directly be helping with pollution especially on our own island, which gets affected the most by pollution. |
