From Evolution to Revolution
https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/hunter-gatherer-culture/
Foraging/Hunter-Gathering was how tribes and different races sustained themselves by hunting animals and gathering plants for food from the environment. For example, Hawaiians would get their food by catching fish or growing Kalo. Another example is, the Indians hunted using weapons like the bow and arrow or utilizing traps. They hunted bunnies, ducks, deer, and different animals. In territories that were close to lakes and water, they would also fish. Agricultural societies are pretty much any community or society that is based and sustained off of growing and farming crops. For example, in a modern society like today, we do not have to hunt for our food. We can just go to the grocery store and buy any food we want. Foods like meat, fruits and vegetables and fish. This is because there are farms that grow and produce crops and raise all types of animals and sell them to the store for people like us to buy. The farmers make money off selling their products and can use that money to get the tools that they need to keep farming and to take care of themselves. Then the cycle repeats. It is a more sustainable and sufficient way of maintaining society. The pros of agricultural societies is it produces a reliable and nutritious food supply. Another pro is it creates specialization. One person might farm, the other may run a store, and another might be a butcher. This creates trade, which is another main thing to keep society sustained. I donʻt think there are any cons to an agricultural society. This is why we do not really see any more hunter gatherer societies that much. Cons of a hunter-gatherer society are sometimes hunters are not able to catch anything that day so they have to stretch their stomach and appetite to survive. I would say that a pro is hunter-gatherers might not have to do as much labour as a farmer.

It is important to know the shift from the native skill set of being able to hunt and gather and farm our own food because it was and still can be a very beneficial way of living for our people. In traditional Hawaiʻi, our ancestors followed an agricultural lifestyle. With this lifestyle, they were able to maintain an extremely well flourishing place to live and were able to settle instead of having to move around constantly. Understanding this will help us to balance buying what we need from outside resources and getting a good education because it is how the modern world works today. Just like living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, we depend on stores and outside resources to get our foods and supplies. Just as hunter/gatherers depended on their resources and had to move on its terms. Once we are able to understand how that works, we will be able to settle and cultivate our resources. If we are able to understand this shift, it will help us to be able to better support the needs of our families now and in the future.

Our Kahiau project focuses on the issue of no poverty, told through the lens of homelessness. The opposing ideas between "native traditions of foraging/hunter-gathering" and "modern Agricultural societies” play into the idea of food and resources not being available to homeless people. It's crucial to remember nowadays there are more people and less resources. But that there are also ways to change that. In modern society we consume more than we create. We take and take resources without giving enough back to replace what we took as well as adding a little more. But if we look at native traditions of foraging and hunter/gathering giving back was just as important as taking. Something the majority of the homeless population struggles with is finding access to affordable food. Affordable often meaning free. If we were to practice some of the traditional ways of acquiring food such as fish ponds and loʻi not only in hawaii but nationwide, i believe it would allow for more food production in a way where we can keep up with consumption. Allowing food to be easier to access, lowering the prices, and making it affordable for homeless people.

Impacts of Religion, Culture, Enlightenment,
& Exchanges through Expansion
Based on what we learned about Europe’s dark ages, the other parts of the world weren't really experiencing their own dark ages. Outside of Europe, it was not considered so dark because outside of Europe they expanded out of the homeland and conquered Egyptian provinces and had huge steps in medicine. The things that made Europe's Dark ages so dark was because of feudalism. Also, they had less powerful governments and devolution from empire to localism caused political stress.

paragraph 2
The events of exploration and exchanges that occurred during the period Silk Road, it has had major impacts on our kahiau issue. The event that had more impacts on our kahiau issue would have to be exchanges. Through the exchanging of many crops and religions, diseases were also spread. The diseases began to take a toll on the communities who contracted them and started to decrease the population of that community. The drastic loss of many lives had an impact on the way the community functioned. It became hard for them to suffice their agriculture. During this time of exchanging, Europeans also took advantage of the Atlantic Slave trade. They used slaves for free labor. Slavery is one of the main impacts of poverty today as well. Due to the sad reality of slavery of African Americans, they are steal treated poorly today.

Understanding history is one of the key factors to finding solutions to modern challenges. Many of the problems we face today are problems once faced in the past. Issues that were dealt with and had solutions. Because of this we are able to look back throughout history and find solutions to help us now. If how it was dealt with in the past was inefficient, we can look at it and find a better solution. If how it was dealt with worked well and no one suffered from it then we can use that and adapt it to fit modern society. When you understand history from both points of view you are able to draw your own conclusions backed by facts. This is valuable because most of the time when we are taught history we are only taught one point of view. The key to fixing many of our problems are hidden within humanities history. If you don't have a good, solid understanding of history you are most definitely doomed to repeat it.

Competition for Resources in a Global Society
Given what we learned about world war, WW1 was not the “war to end all wars.” WW1 was a war that erupted after the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand. I don’t think it really ended because there was a second worldwide war which was WW2. Yet, for Americans, they had the option to bring upon a totally different world for themselves. They had a worldwide mentality, advantage for the following ages, and had greater advancement. Also, I would say no because we can in any case see numerous impacts of the war and numerous individuals right up 'til the present time are as yet attempting to attack others and get more land/an area. For example, The Japanese attack on the US naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, led President Franklin Roosevelt to declare war on Japan. A few days later, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States, and America entered World War II against the Axis powers.

Many times we have to go through rough patches to get to the easy stuff. The idea of mankind evolving through the Agricultural/ scientific/ industrial revolution and then becoming Enlightened during the era of Enlightenment thinkers to utilize those new skills and discoveries to compete for resources in World War. In order to learn and discover those new skills they need to sacrifice themselves, but themselves into battle and work out the kinks. I believe that these events do make sense, humans used these skills that they've mastered just to eliminate themselves because why put these skills to waste? When these skills are needed you can't just sit on the sidelines and not do anything. Get out there and put your knowledge to use. Though despite these being my personal beliefs I am also aware of the role they play in our Kahiau project. Because we put these skills to use and because we fight for resources more and more people are left homeless or even worse, they end up dead. This isnt just a problem in Hawaii, its a problem faced all over the world. When we go to war for resources such as oil, innocent people are caught in the crossfire and end up getting hurt. People are forced out of their homes and struggle for survival in the midst of a war they didnt want. So despite the fact that using these skills and knowledge are beneficial, the damage they cause is something we cant overlook.

Going forward there were many lessons that we could take away from war from the examples of World Wars 1 and 2 and the Interwar Periods in History. For example, we can see that technology played a huge role in the advancement of development for power between the countries. Another example of a fight for power was the important political document, The Treaty of Versailles. Both advancement of technology and the Treaty of Versailles were big factors, both involving the need for power that led to the World Wars. In local issues I would say the biggest example of how advanced technology can affect a war would be the illegal overthrow of Hawaii. One of the key factors which lead to Hawaii standing down was the fact the USA marines were aiming at the castle. A current day example would be Mauna Kea. While we fight to preserve the mountain and its resources, the opposing side wants to use it to further research and new scientific advancements. In my opinion I believe the best way to fix this is to continue bringing the situations to light and getting the attention of mainstream media. As well as taking the correct evidence which has been collected from the beginning to the UN to get them to do something about it.

Final Group Reflection
I have learned many things about my own role as Pua a Pauahi and a future graduate of Kamehameha. Within my community that I come from, given what I have learned about World History and the history of our own Indigenous communities, I can best utilize the opportunities and gift of education I receive as a student on this campus to contribute to and advocate for such ideals as the UN Sustainability Goals within and for the communities that I come from by striving to help my lāhui and help better our community. Whether that is trying to help feed the homeless and other less fortunate people by attending and helping at food banks. I can also attend community board meetings to see what is happening currently in the community and I can try and find solutions to any problems that are going on. The main goal is to Kinai ʻēha, which means to extinguish pain. To extinguish all the pain that the people carry on their shoulders and to try and ease that burden. To help them in any way possible so that they can reach their full potential. - Jayce
I have learned many things about my role as a Pua a Pauahi and a future graduate of Kamehameha within my community. I have learned that this great opportunity I was given to attend Kamehameha Schools and inherit all of its knowledge can be very beneficial here in my community. I can use all of the knowledge I have received as a student to help contribute and advocate for future conflicts that we as a lāhui may face. For example, there have been many changes happening here on Kauaʻi. A couple years back, there was conflict about the Hanapēpē salt beds. Due to it being so close to a helicopter landing, it was messing up the salt beds and many Hawaiians were upset. There is currently an upraise for the future building of new homes in Kōloa. Many natives are not fond of this idea because they believe that there are bones of many men, women, and children buried there. - Xhayeani
As a future graduate and alumni of Kamehameha Schools, I have learned many things about my role as a pua pauahi. I have learned and appreciated the many opportunities and life skills that have been given to me. I am truly blessed to be able to say that I attend Kamehameha School. I can apply all of the knowledge that Ive learned to my community back on my home island, I can also apply my leaardhip skills here. There have been many changes on Kauai. The most recent one was the landslide in Hanalei. The road down to Hanalei is no longer fully open, theres a convoy that you take down and it only goes at certain times. The locals are getting very frustrated because there are a bunch of tourist trying to get down there as well, but locals cant get down there because all of the tourist is taking up room in the line. If I get a chance to help this issue, I would try to get the residence and kids that go to school in Hanalei a pass thing where theres certain times that theyʻre allowed in. Makes it more easier that way. - Kauanoe
Throughout this year I've learned many things about my role as a future graduate of Kamehameha and a Pua a Pahaui. When I think of what my community is, the first thing that comes to mind is definitely my school. Consdering that is where I live and that is where I've grown up. But being stuck in quarantine for over a year Iʻve been able to reconnect with where my family is from. Reconnect with the community I left. After learning about world history all year I’ve come to realize many of the bad aspects are being repeated today. I come from a community where people are stuck in their ways. Stuck in the bad habits and fine with the way things are. With the knowledge I have now in both leadership and about the UN Sustainablity Goals, I can now see where my community needs help. And instead of just only seeing it, I am now able to help change it. And to help better my community. When I am able to go out and make a difference now for my community I know I will be prepared. I know that I can properly educate and help my community to grow prosperous.
