Throughout this school year, I have learned many new skills that have not only enhanced my learning abilities in World History but have also become valuable skills I can use in places other than the classroom. Some of these new abilities I was able to obtain are the use of Photoshop and Illustrator. Towards the beginning of this school year, we were taught to use both of these systems to create collages about World Leaders we had chosen. As a student who works better with visuals, and hands-on lessons, this quickly became one of my favorite parts of the class. With Photoshop, I was able to work on editing pictures of my leader and symbols that represented him and his culture. After, with the help of Illustrator, I created a collage of all those edited photos and added more written information on my leader. In my opinion, using these systems really allowed me to learn about this topic to my greatest ability. Illustrator and Photoshop will also continue to be useful to me because they can be used for others classes and even self-projects outside of school. I have already been able to use Photoshop for my art class, which made the project so much easier. Another skill that has significantly affected my World history learning, is the P.E.E.L paragraph format. This writing technique has not only helped me learn to write proper evidence including writing, but it is also great training for future writing assignments. The P.E.E.L format is an easy starter kit for creating these paragraphs and it is also nice to know that they will be helpful to me later on in my life as well.
One of my favorite topics from this year, that I believe is interesting was our discussions on World War I and II. This has become one of the most intriguing topics in the class to me because it helps us learn about the mistakes we should try not to replicate. During the lesson on the World Wars we learned that the first World War ended with a treaty that had Germany taking the blame for the war and being stripped of its money, military, and more. In my opinion, this was not the greatest choice of peace because not all parties were satisfied with this offer, especially Germany. For that reason, I feel that World War I never truly ended, but went on a slight hiatus, where Germanyʻs pent up anger against the other countries built as well as their illegal military. Now, when we look back at these decisions we made in the war, we can decide if that was truly the smartest way to go about things and if anything similar is to happen again, hopefully, we are better prepared. This also ties into another one of my favorite topics from this class, the Great Depression. I really enjoyed this lesson and flip lecture because I thought it was interesting how dependent the world was on stocks and investments that when they were shut down, everything fell apart. Even after the Great Depression when the stock market fell several other times people were not prepared because they continued to trust these investment plans. This was quite fascinating because this was a real-life example of people not learning from their previous mistakes. The Great Depression was supposed to be the greatest example of how easily everyone can lose their money and everything else, but it did not seem to stop those same people after. My Kahiau Project is reflected on the STG, no poverty. This STG can be related to history and current-day issues because there will always and have always been homeless and poor people. A specific time in history that has brutally affected this STG was World Wars I and II. Statistically, 11% of homeless adults are made up of veterans of these wars. Those numbers are only the adults who are the actual veterans, but they have families who also struggle alongside them. It is not fair that those brave men and women who had fought for our safety and freedom are now living on the streets. Even in Hawaii, the homelessness issue has has a sudden increase, which in turn means veterans are still on the street not getting the help they deserve. As for current issues, recently Hawaii has been giving free tickets to homeless people on the mainland to travel here, in hopes to get better help from the government. Not only has this damaged the communities of Hawaii, but the native homeless of Hawaii are not being given first care. It is our goal to help homelessness around the world, but it is our Kuleana as Hawaiians to help our families and land first. |
