From Evolution to Revolution
ʻĀina was granted to people for theyʻre service. It all starts with the king granting the land to a Baron, then to soldiers, then all the way down to a peasant. In “Dark ages”, Europe in the middle ages had something called Feudalism; A political system based on reciprocal relationships. So, I would agree that this, in fact, would be impacted by leadership characteristic traits because of the decision that was made by the king to give the land. In trusting with the land that the king is giving them. In the flip lecture

Geography impacts the resources a group of people have because depending on your location you will have different resources. Europe had horses which made traveling easier for them. Europe also had steel. In guns, germs, and steel they stated Europe was close to a fertile crescent so they had steel. Steel was such a big resource because with steel you could make weapons and weapons helped win wars. With steel, you could gain new technologies which could help your civilization. With new technology like this, they can use it to trade with other countries. Trade then leads to other goods and countries become allies. All in all, geography can impact a civilization's controls which can explain why some civilizations are successful.

Sustainability rights can help leverage ʻāina resources as a civilization grows and evolves by teaching us how we can improve ourselves and our communities to have a better future for the world. Here in Hawaiʻi, we struggle with a lot of these goals so by following the 17 global sustainability goals we have the power to create a better world by helping to solve some of the biggest world problems we have. “These goals have the power to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality, and addressing the urgency of climate change. Guided by the goals, it is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society, and the general public to work together to build a better future for everyone.” (The Global Goals)

Empires and Leaders
Kain:
Considering the natural resources certain regions might have, what might motivate society to want to control another is power and money. Sometimes many societies will want to take over another just for more land and power. With land and power, it can make a society stronger and can benefit the society through technologies, war, etc. Also, religion is a reason a society might want to take over another society. In Flipped lecture #3 the Spanish went to the Incas to teach them their religion. They didn't accept the religion so a fight broke out killing a lot of people. Also sometimes a society would want to take over another because of money. With cash crops, countries would want to take over other countries because they want to be able to grow cash crops. According to flip lecture #9, It states that people were brought over as slaves because leaders needed a workforce to grow cash crops. (Akana) This is why people would take over another country because they wanted others to work for them so they could make money. When countries take over other countries itʻs mainly because of money and power. |
Religion is a vital role in a society and it has a direct effect on one's moral belief of what's right and what's wrong. The reason I bring this up is because it is a reflection on one's behavior in a different society and a different religion. Before the missionaries came to Hawaiʻi, we believed in different gods and did cultural practices. And when the missionaries arrived in Hawaiʻi, not only did they bring death upon us (diseases) , they also brought theyʻre laws and religion to Hawaiʻi. Which has had a drastic change to the Hawaiians.

Considering the variety of ideas that were presented in our enlightenment mini-projects, a leader can make a big difference in the control of one society over another. In Flip Lecture 9 it talks about the enlightenment era and the scientific and industrial revolution that occurs at the same time. Both revolutions created a need for resources and expansion on national boundaries. Many leaders did of their best to expand their land and resources. They did this so that they could continue to run the scientific and industrial race with other nations and keep up with each other. Other leaders and societies can help to shape another leader's decision-making. During the enlightenment era, the main goals were reason, progress, and using scientific and modern methods. In our enlightenment slides many of the leaders that were presented helped to modernize their countries and people. Because of this countries expanded and their leadership and power became known. Many of the decision-makings were inspired by the exchange of ideas. |

Kain Tubania:
During the era of exploration most things exchanged were goods on the silk road. On the silk road people traded silk and other goods. Diseases were spread through trade and through trade people were able to spread their religion. People had a desire to have different resources and desire for different goods because they wanted to show their wealth. If you had foreign goods like silk it showed how wealthy you were. The creation of cash crops was created as a way to make money off of desired crops (sugar, tobacco etc). To show their wealth people wanted foreign goods. People wanted foreign goods; other people never had to show their status and wealth (FL #9). That is the big reason why people wanted foreign goods and trade was so important. A cash crop is a crop that is grown to be sold for money. The creation of cash crops was from the Portuguese. Portugal invented the plantation system and lots of other countries followed. The cash crop was created to make money. The way these plantation owners grew these crops was with slaves. Slaves were taken from other countries and were seen as property and a workforce (FL #9). All in all the factors that played a role in the desire for foreign goods, seeking of resources and the cash crop is mainly of wealth and money. Koʻiahi Pūnua:
There are many common factors in history that contribute to inciting the age of revolution and we see many of these factors in America and Hawaiʻi today. In Flip Lecture 10 we see that during the french revolution King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette over spent the money of the French. They taxed all the 3rd estate so that they could have more money to live their luscious lives. But France was still extremely poor. Today America has taxed many people and overspent lots of their money. The national debt in the US is 28 trillion dollars. That debt is greater than the economies of China, Japan, Germany, and India combined. In the Honolulu Civil Beat it says “Hawaiʻi Gov. David Ige: There's No Money To Sustain Government As It Existed.” Ige says that he has plans for a twice-a-month furlough for over 10,000 state workers starting January 2021 because of the budget crisis caused by the pandemic. In his press conference he said “Demand for service is the highest itʻs been, and the reality is we just don't have the revenues to sustain government as it existed.” Throughout the year Governor Ige will continue to lay off state workers because of the lack of money that the government has. In conclusion, because Governor Ige spends billions of dollars for things like the rail, he cannot help to sustain the people of Hawaiʻi. FL (4) French Revolution - Google Slides.webm. (2021).
